I heard on the news that Best Buy sold $45 Million worth of gift cards last year that were never redeemed. Now that's a nice way to pad your bottom line.

Maybe I can get rid of that Cicuit City gift card that I got.

Sure, but it's $100 gift card so there'd have to be a little $$ in addition to the Home Depot card.

Dude... $30 at Home Depot is easily worth $120 at Circuit City! But now that you tried to scam me, the deals off!!!

Wal mart got in a lot of trouble a couple years ago around gift cards. There were new accounting rules made about when corps could claim the revenue generated from unused gift cards as generally they weren't accounted for until a purchase is made with the gift card. Wal mart was deferring claiming the revenue endlessly and never had to pay taxes on the profits. Wal mart has an average mark up of about 14% on the items in their store, so one other thing they were doing is claiming that 20% of gift card costs were "administrative expense" therefore they were claiming that all purchases made with gift cards resulted in a 6% loss for them, offsetting some of their other profits. Anyways the IRS didn't take kindly to such things and made a whole bunch of new rules regarding how gift cards have to be accounted for.
