Got one from vickery.. highway robbery if you ask me, but i didn't want to wait to order one online. They didn't have any at batteries plus, they could order me one.. lots of good that does me for today. It was time for a new one anyways.. 4 yrs I was due a battery.. so what the hell. I don't think the little trickle charger i had was working so I picked up a new one as well.. $170 down the hole and i get to ride for a couple hours.. hope it's worth it.

Stupid question...does the bike charge the battery? IOW, is there a point to jumping it to ride around town, only to not start up if you have to turn it off? Only "battery charging" story I know is a guy that let his bike idle to charge the battery. Problem is, it was air-cooled...a '97 TL, I think, and the engine overheated.

There's different levels of dead
The case with mine recently, mine was dead dead. Bump start wouldn't work. Hooked it up to a car and it jumped, but when I took the jumper cables off it would die. Consider I also had a problem in my chargeing system (somewhere with the stator) so it wasn't chargeing the battery while it ran. Not completely the problem though. I hooked the dead dead battery up to a trickle charger over night and it had less charge then it did to begin with (damn, maybe I shouldn't have let it charge sitting on the concrete floor, another no no). Best thing is to see what the charge is at with a volt-reader (olhm reader? whatever it's called damnit) It's a 12v battery as it should read at 12 or more. You're less then that, you have problems. If you want to save the money, try chargeing it before buying a new one.

Yes, bike's charging system will charge the battery while the bike is running. If the battery is toasted and won't hold a charge, then yes, as soon as you shut it off you will be in the same boat again and need to jump it to get it started. However, batteries, as they sit, will slowly lose their "juice" but after a jump start and holding the RPM's up a touch (I dunno, ~3K?), the battery will be re-charged by the bike and hold the charge and be able to start on it's own after shut off.
To prevent the latter situation from happening, you can buy something like a Battery Tender Jr. (small trickle charger) for like $25 to plug the bike into when it sits for extended periods of time (like over winter).

FYI, if your friend just held the RPM's up for a minute or two the battery would have been recharged...letting it run till it over heated was excessive ;)

Thanks for the kind responses. Before owning my own bike, I believed the bikes didn't charge the battery because there was no alternator :banghead: . I have two older jet skis, and I know those batteries do not charge by running them.

That's a GREAT line! Someone should use that in a movie.....

Sorry, I haven't had to buy a battery here either. Good luck!

Mine was dead dead.. i did hook it to a friends charger, but it wouldn't charge, jumped the bike from a car and after i let it run for 20 or so mins, it wouldn't start again... The battery should have been replaced last summer, as it died a few times and charging it back up worked.. but this time.. it was D E A D..

So vickery screwed me for $100 w/ the batt, and the bat tender + was 60.. so yeah... $170 after tax, but it was worth it.. Felt so good to ride.. after a month of 70+ hour work weeks... it felt good.

Well, my battery is kind of a weird size, so I knew it was gonna be hard to find.. I went to Vickery, Fay Myers, Performance Cycle and Batteries +. Ended up buying one at Walmart for $58 (about 3 weeks ago). I couldn't find the exact same size battery, but I got a slightly taller one with more cca's.
