View Full Version : Whats wrong with my front tire?

I have a 2006 Kawasaki ZX-10R, 4500 miles. :)
Here is my problem. Before I took my front tire off, it would only turn about 1 revolution, and seemed to be "binding." I took the front tire off to get a new tire mounted and balanced. Got my tire mounted, repacked the wheel bearings and re-installed the tire. It spun free like butta' then I put the brake caliper's on.... 1 revolution. :(
So I narrowed it down to the brakes, and suggestions? I did have the brake lines replaced with Spiegler's and had them filled with race fluid. Should I take the caliper's off, removed the resevior cap, and press the piston's completely in? Hopefully this will relieve any pressure in the system or am I completley off?
Also any new brake pad suggestions? I might as well replace those too. :)

Had the same problem on the Hawk. Ride it around for a couple miles and it will reset itself. Seriously. It it worriesome at first but it will go away once the caliper pistons reset themselves.

Even if it was that way before I pulled the tire off? :dunno:

You are gonna have some drag on the rotor. If you have no drag on your rotor you have a problem. My front would not turn a full revolution then after a few miles it loosened up just a bit. It still drags, like it should, but not like the brakes are being applied.
Another thing to do (Got this from Dean) is to loosen your axel bolts and the end nut on the axel and then spin the tire. It will center itself. Then tighten the nuts back up.

I'll give that technique a try. It really doesn't seem too bad now, I just thought it seemed a little "off" to only be getting 1 revolution out of the tire.

Then tighten the nuts back up.Actually, leave the axle bolt tight. Loosen the pinch bolts on the side of the axle that slides through the forks. While spinning the wheel around several times, lightly apply the front brake. Hold the brake and tighten the axle pinch bolts.

Actually you should loosen the pinch bolts and bounce the front end up and down on the ground with a front stand. You should do this with the calipers off. That will center the wheel in the forks. Then put back on the calipers and see if you still have the problem. If so you can draw a line on the disks with a sharpe and spin the wheel again. Where the mark is rubbed off will show you the problem if you have a warped rotor. If the mark is worn off pretty evenly you could have a pad or caliper hanging up.

DK not sure if its 2006s or not but I remember seeing in sport rider a while back there was a recall for the rims breaking or somthing.

That was actually the '04s.... most will have been replaced by now.

David,
I am sure you worked it out, but the same thing happened with me last week with my R1. The problem does work itself out after a quick ride. We need to go for an IMI session soon.
