LOL... here's one that drives me crazy. You spend 4-5 bucks for a cup of coffee and then they expect you to tip.... WTF? What's the tip for? The machine does everything for them now.... there is hardly any talent involved.... they just have to do their job... should they get tipped for it?

That whole tipping thing really gets my goat. I can understand tipping at a restaurant where the wait staff is making something like 2.50 an hour. But just because you work in some kind of "service industry", this should not allow you to panhandle at the front counter!
I have no problem kicking a few bucks to people who go out of their way to do a really good job. The movers I hired last winter. They busted their asses to help me move out of a 3 story townhouse. For their efforts, I tipped them well. I've even gone back to a restaurant, apologized to a waitress, then gave her more money because I miscalculated the tip from dinner the night before.
But this ever present panhandling at coffee shops or fast food joints is for the birds.

I usually just give them the change I get back from my $1.60 cup of coffee. It's not a big deal to me, not like you have to leave them a $2 tip. I think you could spare $0.40  If you can't, you should be buying coffee there anyways.
How about this one.... I was watching the news this morning and they were talking about how much people spend in bottled water, when the majority of cities have excellent drinking water. Sales of bottled water are right behind soda in total sales and soda is #1. So how do you feel about drinking tap water Vance? Because the news said that the top selling bottled water, Aquafina and Dasani, both start off as tap water. ;)

Bank of America now offers a program for you to "keep the change" where they will round up to the next dollar of all your purchases no matter how big or small and the difference will be put into a savings account for you. So, that .40 can add up for you buddy!
Or you can just do what i've been doing for years and round up anyways and low and behold within a few months you've already got a few hundred bucks! Paid off numerous credit cards with me 'extra cash'

Just another example of how some can convince a large population to do something for absolutely no reason.
Their has never been any real difference between tap and bottled water. Yet people will pay a buck 50 in the machines for them. Why? Because they are convinced it is better water by people whose only motive is to extract more moment out of your pocket.
This is not new, the major religions have been doing it for a long time. But you would think more people would ask the question why more often.

Werd. If I'm drinking water, it's from the tap. The only times I'd use bottled water is if I'm going somewhere and I know I'll need it. I need to get one of those hiking water bottles.

alot, the most i accumulated was upwards towards a grand, i shit you not you can ask alan! i just round everything up and check my check book ledger to the bank statement. at first i was freaking out, because, well that's what i do, but because everything had cleared. there weren't any deposits that i forgot to enter, i went back about 6 or 7 months worth of going through my ledger and it was all correct.
so i put that into savings for another couple months just incase i did make a mistake somehow, after i was 100% sure everything had cleared and that really was all my money i spent it! lol, paid off a credit card and some other bill.
and on the water thing, anyone in aurora notice the water smells funny like the last week? and i dont like drinking tap water because usually it smells or tastes funny, the only way i'd drink it is if i've ran it through the filter, am really really dehydrated and it's been sitting in a cup full of ice (because really cold water is soooo good), or if i'm in boulder/louisville because their water is da bomb diggity!!!! though i haven't had any boulder water in a few years, so who knows.

I get you here... and if I drank coffee from a usual vendor that I had some kind of customer relationship with, then I would probably kick them the change. My point was more to the fact that everywhere you go people have taken to throwing out "Tip" jars and half these people have no concept of what a tip means. They just expect you to hand over your change without doing anything out of the ordinary. Yet another shining example of getting something for nothing.

I wouldn't drink the water out of the tap at my house, but that's why I have an inline filter going to the fridge. That way the ice and the water are filtered and taste just fine.

I rent a hot/cold dispenser from Deep Rock for $5.80 a month. Then I ordered bottle of water (at their current price-at that time) and drank em. They also charged me a $5 deposit on each bottle. Now, I take my empties over to the health and fitness store. They have one of the best purifications systems I've seen. They take "tap" and turn it into water that tastes better than Deep Rock. And it is for something like 35 cents a gallon. I go through about 35 gallons every two months. If that we"Aquafina" bottled water at 1.39 per 20 oz it would cost: $311.36. As it stands, that water costs me $23.85 every two months or about 40 cents a day.

A lot of people buy bottled water from vending machines for the convenience. Jogging with a cup of water sucks. a portable bottle with a resealable cap is just more convenient. And carrying around a bottle or jug just in case you want to pour some water into is a hassle.
I agree tho, water should be very cheap if not free. Anyone want to purchase a liter of air? I am selling it for $5 a can.

For rides, I picked up one of those hydration back packs and fill it up--toss a few bottles of frozen water next to it and it last me all day on a 300 mile ride. There is nothing like having a quick sip of chilled water at a stop sign.

I hadn't seen that one yet... Not that I'd use it anyway, I'm sorry but if you want a tip do something for it like bring me my food, refill my drink, and clean up after me. Saying "would you like to make that a large combo?" and then making me fill up my own friggen soda does not count.
Even Starbucks used to make the drinks by hand when they had the old machines, but now it's all automated... I rarely tip there anymore unless they do something extra or it's my sister's store.

I used a Camelback on the SoWeCo ride and it was definitely worth bringing along! I couldn't really keep the water completely chilled though, in fact it got pretty warm at one point. Refilling at a gas stop worked pretty well though. Not sure the best way to keep it cold longer since I don't want to carry a whole backpack when it's hot like that.

No matter what comes out of your tap, it can't be any worse than the stuff they were serving in Cheyenne at the air show last week. They handed Rybo and I some and it took a minute to work up the nerve to drink it.
Actually my Denver tap water is usually pretty good. Occasionally they will treat it and then it's funky for a week or so, but otherwise fine. I still want to get a filter on the sink, but that's about it. I did grow up on well water though, that's good stuff. High mineral content gives it a distinct (but good) flavor, and because it's 700 feet underground after getting there from natural filtration it's definitely pure. Hell I should buy a house out in Elbert county just for the well access and bottle that stuff up! At least then I could say it came from a "natural well", which makes it better than Aquafina.

Allright, bottled water, something I actually know a little about.
Tap Water - In the US there are strict safety standards that your tap water must pass. There aren't any "taste" standards, but water that tastes icky isn't necessarily bad for you. Depending on the source, and the plumbing tap water is going to tast different. Metropolitan Water District of Los Angeles won a water taste competition with some of their tap water a few years ago, then ran a full page advertisement in the LA Times to brag about it. WTF?
Bulk Filters - You know, the one where you put in 50 cents and put your jug in there and "clean" water comes out? Where I used to live over half the locals were from Mexico and were used to getting their drinking water from this method. Where that had previously lived, drinking tap water was unsafe. Evertime I went to the grocery store there was a line at the water machine. There were also water "stores"--whole stores in strip malls with nothing but water filtering machines. These machines, for the most part, are unregulated. So when was the last time they changed the filters in them? Are there even actual filters installed?
Bottled Water - Purified - aka Dasani (Coke) and Aquafina (Pepsi). Sure, it's expensive. But it's portable and stylish. Coke and Pepsi "make" their water using reverse osmosis filters. Essentially, these are filters so dense, only water molecules can get through. Ever tasted water directly out of an RO filter? Ick. Gross. They actually put back in mineral "contaminants" to give water the flavor people expect.
Bottled Water - Mountain Spring Water (Arrowhead/Poland Spring) - Believe it or not, there are actual source requirements to pass to put the words "Mountain Spring Water" on your bottle. Actual geologists (like me!) map, document, and test actual mountain springs, and reports are screened by the FDA and their designees. Having a water source declared a "spring" and installing infrastructure to capture that water without compromising the quality is no small feat. What was it, a Dasani commerical that had a bear swimming in a mountain spring drinking some bottled water? Pretty funny, but it's nothing like that. Collection facilities at the spring are an amazing array of custom, food-grade stainless steel, and the water purity is tested to standards far more rigorous than tap water.
Wow, this may be my longest post ever. bored now.
