So I've been a sprint customer for 10 years....now I want out. BUT - I can't get through to their "cancellation / retention" department. Anybody have a number for them? Any info on why this is seemingly impossible?

Try dialing 611 from your phone, it should put you right in touch with their customer service dept.

are you planning on going with another wireless provider? If so, port your number and make them do the transfer and cancellation.
Otherwise, 611 like Rybo said.

Ah Sprint, you can join anytime, but you can never leave! The cancellation number is simple as finding the number on back of your credit card. You'd be surprised how quickly someone from Sprint will call YOU and try to keep yet another entry on the credit card's bad merchant list. You almost have to be your own lawyer to play these games. Sure its part of years from carefully planned and scripted business plans designed to keep you from defecting, but it can be done. They will do and say anything saying you can't simply reverse the charges. I have years of experience making these guys give up. It all comes from the principle that telephone companies are pure evil and shouldn't be rewarded.
I wish I was dumb enough to do business with companies like this again, because leaving is an absolute joy to deal with. Even quitting contracts is fun.
Never had a bill collector after me yet for telling companies like Sprint to stick it. But it does take a lot of time wasting their time!

CDbouncer are you going to port to another carrier? That is the easiest route as the new carrier does it for you. If you are wanting to PM me, I work for VZW in the corp office and can probably set you. Let me know and I can help in anyway I can.

Do you know what this number is supposed to be for? I actually get a human but now I'm on hold again waiting for the "account services, cancellation or retention" dept......

Go to one of the more popular storefronts during lunch and make a scene. Trust me, you'll get someone. (Did that at the AT&T store by Park Meadows back in the day.) Not only is the customer service great after all heads turn to you for saying something like "Who in here is in charge of cancellations because the service sucks?" in a loud voice, but they remember you when you come back.
