it spins but is drawing power. when the starter is engaged voltage drops from 12+ to 7-8 volts. everything else has been replaced from the battery to the starter cable. the only thing that original is the starter and they are like $200 new. so i'd rather test it before replacing it.

What's the problem?

well at 7-8 volts it only spins at half the speed it needs to start. so there is only like 1 revolution every 3 seconds.

If it can be serviced, it's probably just dirty brushes or contacts.

Rebuild that thing. It is pretty easy, only about $25 for a rebuild kit. :)

i have disassembled and tested the starter according to the haynes manual and everying tested good. i have no idea why its drawing so much power.

If it is drawing that much power it will be generating a lot of heat at your problem point.

power isnt applyed long enough for heat. the longer its connected the more power it drains.
