Really getting nasty there. Lots of families have had to leave their homes. Some don't even have homes anymore. Hope this ends pretty soon.

Yup. I'm in San Jose right now and it's about the only thing on TV here. A half million people now evacuated including a lot in San Diego, and they've pulled about as much as they can from fire departments around the state so they're trying to get more from other states now. Can't see any of it from where I am other than it being a little hazy over the hills (we're in a sort of valley here so you can't see beyond it).

They said they may have to move the SD football game to Arizona. The fire is pretty close to the stadium. Those Santa Anna winds are making it near impossible to control this thing.

It is sooo bad looking at pictures of the fire and it truely looks like hell on earth!!!
Was watching MSN this morning and they are afraid that it will only end when the fire hits the coast line.
I feel so bad for all the people that have lost their homes. When you are only given 1 hour to get out of your home how do you decide what to take all the lost memories and photos and possesions. I couldn't get everything I wanted out in an hour thats for sure.

I have been reading sad stories, people who have been trying to take their pets, but the pets got scared and ran away from the owners. They had to leave them there because they did not have time to find them :(

Dana,

Did you edit this picture or get it from somewhere that did?

Look at the photo. There appears to be a demon coming out of the flames with left horn sticking out and two fists raised from the http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v470/devaclis/MalibuFire2.jpgflames. Great Photoshop. If not, were all in for some very bad times. And yes, I believe in the battle between evil and good. Very sad what is happening. I have space in my place if someone knows of a family that needs temp shelter.

There is some major devastation taking place. People's entire lives are being destroyed and someone thinks it appropriate to photoshop?

i've had over 10 friends evacuate already. 3 from Malibu and about 7 or 8 from the 2 in Santa Clarita.

My parents live in the Infamous San Fernando Valley which is in between Malibu and Santa Clarita (also known as Valencia). anyways, they said their backyard is covered in ash. And the winds are blowing so hard that big ass trees have fallen all around the neighborhood.

over half a million evacuated. President Bush declared 7 counties as a state of emergency.

Not funny at all.

My mother lives in Santa Clarita Valley where there are a couple of fires right off Seco Cyn and Bouquet Cyn, talked to her yesterday, she is right in the middle of three different fires in surrounding areas with a few miles each way.

Either way, February she is closing her shop down and retiring. Hopefully she will just come live with me and I won't have to worry about her as much. I'm optimistic that her house will be fine as we have many valuables and memories that would never get replaced if something were to happen.

That pic came from an evacuee of that fire. Guess they thought it was ok.

I don't think they are trying to make a joke or make light of the situation.

I think it was more of an artistic representation of how the feel about the fire.

It is a demon, hell, etc...

ya one of my friends lives off of Bouquet about 2 miles up from Valencia Blvd. he said the same thing surrounded by fires.

Yo, Slo you ever had a chance to ride Bouquet Cyn??? haven't had a chance to find a canyon out here that equals that rode.

But the big fire is in Stevensons Ranch off the 5 north just south of 6 flags.

At this point they're telling people that if they feel unsafe in any part of these cities, to just leave now. Has your mother considered doing that? I was on a hill (well, actually about 35 feet up a radio tower, taking down some equipment) overlooking the Hayman fire near Woodland Park and watched that thing climb the hill across the valley with unbelievable speed. With the right winds (like a strong Santa Ana) a big fire can move *very* fast. If I lived within a few miles of any of these fires I'd probably be packing the important stuff up at this point, before the sheriff came by telling me I had an hour or less to do it and get out.

ya everyone talks about the windy city as being Chicago. Chicago wasn't given that nickname because of the wind.

Anyways, my point SoCal gets way more and stronger winds. The worst part of the winds are that they are Hot and Dry.

Those Santa Ana winds are nothing to mess with.

i had to ride from San Bernidino to LA in them once. i was literally ridng at 45 degrees going straight.

I grew up in Placentia in fact Yorba Linda Blvd and Bradford.......that was little while ago I do recognize Valencia Blvd. is that around Yorba Linda Blvd?? Or am I totally turned around on the ole map thingy????

I do remember the Santa Ana winds and every year the San Bernidino Mnts would burn and we couldn't go out for recess because the smoke and ash's were so bad.

Hahahha... you're way off.

Valencia is where 6 Flags Magic Mountain is. up the 5 north. about 15 minutes north of the SF Valley. 45 minutes north of Downtown Los Angeles.

Thank you I mapped six flags and I'm back I was all jack around Hmmm imagine that.

On of my best buddies is in and around LA and called him to make sure he was ok and he was like ya no problem the fire is like 15- 20 miles away no problem. Shit Pueblo is farther than that but I think he was a little more worried than he let on.....ended the confo with I'm good for now. Truely very scary situation out there.

Matty I hope your friends along with their homes will be ok. My thoughts are with them. :)

Yeah, bummer that. I remember all kinds of fires from when I lived there for 11 years in the desert. I feel a lot more sorry for the little people like us losing their things though than the multi-bazillionaire's that had their castle burn down. Even if there was Elvis's memorabilia in it.

I think that's a great Foto-Chop with the Balrog. I don't consider it tacky at all, but merely a reflection of the thought that the demon fire was coming for them. But, maybe that's just me.....:)

Of course I did haha, my uncle lived way up the canyon in a cabin more than 2/3 the way up the mountain. Used to also go ride Mullholand Dr (rock store) over to Malibu and down to Venice then back through Hollywood.....Other alternating weekends would go to Angeles Crest Highway and ride there as well.

At this point they're telling people that if they feel unsafe in any part of these cities, to just leave now. Has your mother considered doing that?

Yeah my mom is old-school Korean, and about as stubborn as you can imagine. I will be keeping track of things and if the time comes, I will head there myself and force her to leave. Stupid thing is, I haven't been online much lately or watching the news, didn't even hear of the fires until last night when I overheard a co-worker talking about it, then called my mother.

When I was in the Marines, back in the early 90's, there was a big quake in California as well, I was overseas and heard others talking about it, saw it on CNN, a highway overpass (14/5 highway) that fell that is also near her house (Valencia) and shop (Newhall), went running off to the phones, couldn't even get through over the phone for 3-4 days.

yep that's one of the causes of the Lake Arrowhead fire in SoCal.

What's unfortunate is that they are saying more than half the fires are arsin aka started on purposes.

Driving through the Hayman fire looked like that. It's hard to describe... It just has this dimension to it, like driving into Hell. It's 11am and the sky is pitch black except for this dark orange glow to it, the air is thick, and because of all the ash the normal sounds you're used to are different.

if you're familiar with SoCal:

The fires are as far North as Santa Barbara

1. Ventura county - Santa Rosa
2. LA county - Malibu, Castaic, Agua Dulce & Valencia
3. San Bernardino County - Lake Arrowhead
4. Orange county - Santiago Canyon
5. Riverside County
6. San Diego 6 different fires there.
