I was matched as a Big Brother in Denver. We meet when he was 9 or 10. Let's just say I took him to the bar this summer for a beer... God that was akward!!!!! He's now over in Iraq, com'n home in 6 weeks..hopefully!!!!!
I truely think it depends upon the match. Is that person willing & able to make a committment??? I think they need to agree to at least a year still. There was also a very long waiting period to find a Big. GREAT PROGRAM!!!!
I really do like the program, & almost did it for the 3rd time here in Phoenix. Now I've got my own problems w/ a wife & 14 month old kid... =:-)
If any other questions, please let me know! Tooo much to write!!!!!

I was a big brother in the late 90's for a couple of years. Great program! I picked him up a couple of days a month to go mess around town or catch a flick. Not sure I helped any with the whole 'man in his life' thing but it got him out of the house and a chance to experience some things his mom couldnt afford to do (i.e. Paintball).
I highly recommend it for your son(s) but be selective when you pick your big.

Ya, I think I am going to look into it! I'm not much into sports, don't know how to skateboard, etc... but my boys need some influence like that... My little one wants a skateboard for XMas and I know he doesn't know how, and I am not the one to teach him. LOL...
My oldest has a guitar and wants to get into that, he is also has Autism, and he broke a string and asked me to change it.....eeeekkk... don't know how to do that either....
Did teach my son to ride a dirtbike, almost killed us , but hey at least I got one skill to pass on.

Waiting list?... better check it out soon then! Wow... that's awsome that you are so committed! That's amazing that you still talk to him and had the chance to watch him grow. Bet you had a big impact on his life and his choices?
I tried doing boyscouts with my kids... but man, it was tough. I'm to girlie and don't know nothing about "cool knives" and stuff... my oldest as a strange obsession with knives....kinda scary. ha ha

As I Like to Say.... "Where else can you corrupt the Hell out of Them, Feed them Full of Sugar, & Send them home to MOMMY!!!!!!!!!!"
Just like 2 sides to every coin... The match & the committment is the most important! From my experience, the kid just likes to hang out with the Big and do anything. The BIG QUESTION: What are you going to let them do???? For example, The mother in Denver let him ride on my motorcycle!!!!!
God the stories the little & myself could tell!!!!!! I'm still freaked out about buy'n him a beer @ the bar this summer!!!!!

UM... That is one reason why it takes so long to get matched!!!! Background checks & to make sure the person is willing to do the committment!

Makes sense... wouldn't want to just let your kids go with anyone! Especially these days. Sure it is a long process... but worth it in the end. :)

Have them join a gang like the Crips or Bloods.
(Check with Matty, I think he's got connections.)
Great mentoring by the older members and they can learn a trade like Crack dealing.
(And your oldest's interest in knives is a plus.)
J/K,
Bring them out to some CSC events, like the summer BBQ.
The kids usually dig it and with the exception of Suki's boy Saite landing
on his head in the skate park we haven't lost one yet.:banghead:
I know a lot of CSC'ers have kids, you guys should plan some kid freindly events.
Maybe even get some of us to volunteer time, pit bikes, dirt bikes, gear, etc. and give some riding lessons.
Never too early to start training the next generation of riders.

ha ha ha.. that was hilarious!
For sure... I will keep an eye out for events... yes a kid friendly event would be awsome.
Volunteers ALWAYS welcome... even with our non-profit! :)
ya... a dirt track day... teach the kidos how to ride! Sounds fun!

Get them into BMX racing. All ages ,lots of tracks around Denver, drop them off at the track in the morning, pick them up in the afternoon. Local BMX clubs is the way to go as adult supervision will be there. Some have loaner bikes to get the kids started. Most have regular weekend racing. Our cycling club in Longmont is adding BMX this March and we are looking at a program for kids in need to get them out of trouble and into racing. My buddy's kids grades went from shit to B's when BMX racing was going to be taken away until he improved his grades.

wow... the waiting list for "community Mentoring" Big Brothers is 6 mos to a year! :(
But they have another program my boys are going to start called "sports buddies" where they actually get a Big Brother, but they don't take them on their own. A group of Big Brothers and the kids meet at one place and they do activities together. Prob so it can be more supervised, but after 6 mos if the Big and the Little want to continue, they can start the traditional Big Brother program together. Very cool! Im excited for them.:)
