I had to sell my handguns when I moved last year and I've finally gotten ahead enough to buy another one.

I'm looking for a 2 to 4 inch 38 or 357 magnum revolver, 9mm 40 or 45 Springfield XD, 1911, or Sig p229.

I have around 400 to spend.

Stick with the 1911's ... I have a Springfield 1911-A1 Loaded, 9mm, in stainless with dark red wooden grips. It's a great gun that is easy & cheep to shoot compared to a 1911 in .45 cal. The "Loaded" features make it great out of the box for local competition matches. The only thing to watch out for with the 1911's is that the grip safety must be fully depressed to fire ... not good for defensive competitions in which you draw from a holster and don't always get just the right grip. I had mine 98% deactivated by grinding down the mechanism so it barely has to be moved to fire.

If you change your mind and decide to go with an all out 1911 for potentially a lot more than $400, go with a Dawson Precision ( http://www.dawsonprecision.com/ ) STI. The new Spartan goes for $600 (w/ fully adjustable sights!) and the Trojan goes for $925 (you can also spend like $4500 on a full up competition 1911 that has the Terminator look to it). I haven't read up on the Spartan, but I can't imagine an STI tuned by Dave Dawson that doesn't blow away all the big names at that start out in the $800 - $1000 range! If I ever decide to get a new 1911, it will be an STI by Dawson! My Srpingfield was $775+tax and I shopped around a bit. Kimber's basic 1911 in 9mm starts at $600 or so, but doesn't have some of the competition features.

If you really need to stay in the $400 range, consider the CZ-75B. It's a great gun that will shoot with any big-brand 1911 in the $800 range for like $450 brand new. If you are NOT stuck on the single action or competitive shooting aspects of a 1911, then you can't beat a new Ruger (P-series) in the $400-$500 price range either.

Good luck and sorry to blab on and on ... makes me want to get out an shoot over the holidays! Vr, RAK

Right now I'm financially limited to the 400 dollar range, so the expensive 1911's are out of the question. The Steyr's are nice handguns supposedly unfortunately I can't trust my life to a gun I haven't used before and seen it work. This is gonna be my CCW when I get my permit but I want a compact frame not subcompact my hands just don't fit a sub compact.

IMHO,
In the .38/.357 calibers for CCW a revolver might be a good choice.
(New Taurus, used S&W)
If you don't feel the need to carry more than 6 rounds chambered, a revolver is hard to beat.
Rarely, if ever, jams or misfires, easy to clean/maintain.
(Get a double action if you're concerned about dud rounds.)

And since .357's chamber both calibers you can practice with the cheaper/lighter .38 loads
and carry with the .357 loads.

Just be sure to also pratice with your carry loads from time to time.

Yeah which is why that is my top choice. I prefer 4 inch revolvers because they fit my hand better, but I'm open to anything.

Dude, get a Glock! Plenty of used ones out there in that price range and they are as reliable as handguns get.

Steyr M9-A1 (9mm) like new! $300

Have you posted this on http://www.steyrclub.com/ ? If I didn't already have an M9, I'd be on this like white on rice!

Like Hoopty said, if you're looking for a sub compact for a ccw, look at used Glocks, they're a dime a dozen. You might find a sub-compact Steyr, but they are a bit rare and usually go for more than 400.

I live by my XD's. It will cost you around 500 for a new one but it would be well worth the wait to scrape up another 100 bux. Great features including grip and trigger safety, load chamber indicator, cocked indicator, and the ability to change form compact to full size grip with one gun!!!! I love mine.

The 9mm sub compact holds 16+1 or 10+1, the .45 holds 13+1 or 10+1

Here is the .45 in 4"

^^ That gun right there makes me happy in the pants I want one REALLY bad.

the OP stated they do not want a subcompact because of fitment issues. They also want a gun they are familiar with.

Shoot on shootas /Scer :)

I have a Rossi .357 revolver that I would consider selling. Don't know what it's worth, though...

Kim carries an XD 40, .40cal service model and I have the Springfield 1911 Champion, .45. They both are the best I've ever shot!!! If my Ruger P90 wasn't so big, it would be my ultimate pistol. IMO it has the best safety mechanism and it's double action.

Glock's suck!! That's for Dave :-)

16+1????
No such thing as overkill eh?

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure sometimes it's nice to put an overwhelming amout of lead in the air.
The only handgun I own is a 1911.

I've read the average distance of the typical self defense weapons use is usually less than 15 feet.
If nobody's dead after 3 rounds, I'm either too far away or I'm a lousy shot.

True, true, true....... There's most likely never going to be a gunfight where you would need more than a few rounds, unless zombies were chasing you!!!!!!!!!!!!! But it sure is fun when your out at the range!!

If you can't hit the Bad Guy with a dbl tap and maybe an insurance follow-up shot than you better be wearing body armor!!!! LOL

Glocks are nice and I like the one I have, but I would put a few more bucks together if possible and go for the XD.

I had a Glock 23. I didn't like it very much. It shot decent and was completely reliable I just did not like the way it felt.

I think that is the biggest complaint about the glocks. Hold an XD and you will see that they designed the grip angle perfectly.:)

True, unless you get the XD w/ the Trijicon sites, but I meant a new XD rather than get a used Glock. I'd like to put the Trijicons on my glock. I think I would like it as much as the Springfield then.

Unless you get the Glock with Trijicons. ;) I have a set for my G21, haven't installed them yet though.

HR- any word on the snubbie?
