This individual will primarily be responsible for designing and developing the Plate Boundary Observatory (PBO) group World Wide Web presence and all content including HTML, PHP pages and the PBO web-based data products.
Essential Job Functions
Design, develop, and implement next generation scalable, fully W3C standard-compliant web site using a "best practices" approach and PHP MVC framework technologies (ie.Ruby on Rails, Code Ignitor, Pair, Zend).
Utilization of object oriented OO structures and design patterns with PHP 5
Work with PBO Data Projects Manager, Solutions Coordinator, and Archivist to develop and maintain web tools for data and metadata access.
Implement a sound security model for security on exposed hosts, can troubleshoot connectivity and data delivery issues, and connect web authentication with other authentication methods (Radius, LDAP, etc.).
Work with EarthScope Sr. Web Administrator and Education and Outreach staff to provide connections between PBO and EarthScope websites.
Skills and Knowledge
Understanding of graphic design, designing pages for browser compatibility, and an intermediate understanding of the UNIX operating system (Solaris, Linux, etc.).
Advanced knowledge of web authoring standards including HTML, CSS, XML, W3C standards compliance, Javascript, and Regular Expressions is required.
Ability to program in Perl, PHP, Java, and experience with Java applets is desirable.
Familiarity with techniques for making web sites accessible to people with disabilities.
(Nice to have, but not required!) Advanced knowledge of presentation technologies including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Macromedia Dreamweaver
Experience using Windows and UNIX/Linux operating systems.
Experience with all aspects of the Apache Web Server including module compilation, Secure-Socket Layer setup, and maintenance
Outstanding verbal and written communication skills in addition to experience with writing and editing content. Knowledge of the AP writing style is desirable.
Education and Experience
Bachelors degree in computer science, preferably with an emphasis in information systems, or in software engineering, or related discipline, or equivalent education and experience.
At least two years of recent work experience in Web Develpment using open source software products and tools, including Apache, MySQL, javascript, PHP and, ideally, AJAX. Beneficial to have experience with OGC and GIS.
