View Full Version : WANTED: Starter bike for girl in Denver

Other than assorted older off-models like 440's, 550's, older 600's... I've steered her toward a ninja 250/500 or a GS500. I'm not super comfortable with putting her on an SV650 because im overly protective but an SV or 620 Monster she could handle as long as she gets some help from a legitimately advanced rider.

She's 5'7" so seat height isn't a massive issue either.

I've sent her to this site, told her to talk to the racers about bikes, maintenance, and rides because I don't want her hauling down some canyon with noobies trying to impress her  and she's very mechanically handy so oil changes and stuff should be easy as long as someone can teach her.

If you happen across any bikes or know of something in the Denver area shoot me an email Stockdalebj@gmail.com

Thanks a ton!!! Safe riding on the upcoming season.

I started on an 01 R6, I'm thin and about 5'9'' and this bike works great for me... other than being carborated (which sucks!!) I know a 600 might be too big but its not all that much different from a 500. I'm moving up to DENVER in about 6 weeks so it would be great to have another girl to cruise with. I know my limits and I always still within my comfort zone.

A twin 500 is a TOTALLY different ride than an inline 4 600.

There is a pretty interesting read here that I think a new rider should read. http://www.sportbikegurls.com/forums//showthread.php?t=1857

I have a 2005 GS500 F that I am looking to sell. Bought from another CSC member for my girlfriend, she put about 20 miles on it and gave up. Been stored properly since this summer. Let me know if you have any interest.

Being able to tool around at 60% on a 100hp+ bike is one thing, keeping your head on when you're into a corner 10mph faster than you should be, or when a deer jumps out in front is another.

I am personally of the school of thought to start small, wring the piss out of it... then move to something bigger. Surviving on a bike is not the best way to learn, that's just my humble opinion, but everyone learns differently.

Yea, I got a couple of emails. Unfortunately she wants to spend around $2000ish. Hopefully she will be on this board soon.

I agree that the power and torque are different... just hope she has a great teacher. that makes all the difference in the world

For $2K she may only be able to find a used Ninja 250. But that's what I started on, rode it until I was bored and learned a few things then moved up.

Sometimes those Ninja's are hard to come by though, so she will need to really keep an eye on craigslist, and it may not hurt to check with the dealerships for any trade-ins. But those 250's go fast so if she finds one, I would say jump on it if she likes it.

You might also check the Ninja 250 board for used bikes as well. http://forums.ninja250.org/

For general "learning to motorcycle" information, that's a great board as well. I learned a ton from reading things on there.

I picked up my old EX500 off of ebaymotors for about $2k. Check out Ebaymotors, especially as it gets closer to riding season. Those 250's will be all over the place and probably in that price range. I personally wouldn't pay more than about $1500 for a starter 250 at the most. Craigslist can be kinda hit or miss but a lot of the listings I found on ebay were for sale locally too and it'll give you a good idea just what kinda bikes are in there area for sale. my $.02

I highly recommend her taking the MSF (motorcycle safety Foundation) beginners course and reading Proficient Motorcycling by David Hough. GREAT book for the newbie or anyone looking to refresh on some much needed information. The course runs around $240 usually and she will more than likely get like a 10% lower insurance premium to boot. So in essence it does pay for itself in more than just dollars and cents. It has saved my rear more times than I can count. The course provides the bike, books, and maybe a loaner helmet if she doesn't have one.

You can pick up a used Yamaha FZR 600 for probably $2000 and parts are VERY plentiful. Its what I started with. The 250cc option would of course also be a good one.

She's taken the MSF, she needs street experience... and I'm in Northern Virginia so I can't teach her myself. I'm hoping she can find some quality riders out there to get some miles under her belt. I got her all the gear a couple years ago, and she did well on my Kawi 440 so I think she will pick it up fast.

I already sent her a bunch of Craigslist 250's and an older 500. They will be sufficient. I'm just looking for a bike, not so much advice... I could write a book on advice

I have a good idea of what I want her to get... the question is does anyone on here have it :D

There's plent of gals in the CSC that do mostly female rides on occasion.
Just tell her to stay away from Sully, Sprtbkbabe, Beotch, and Jenni.
Them bitches is crazy.

Most of the guys are squids, stunters, or leg humpers so I'd have her stay away from riding with any of them as well.

NT650?

Isn't Piezy planning to upgrade from her GS500 in the spring?

I'm going to be honest with you all... I may not be a leg humper but I'm a bit of a squid, myself ... even in full gear. It's probably best she's not riding with me *grin*

She's looking at that GS500, the bandit, and a ninja 500... which are acceptible starter bikes, and a good bit more scalable than a 250.

This girl's a hottie... I dated her for 6+ years and she's still one of the most beautiful women I've ever met. I'm kind of jealous you guys get her. :P

How's the Highplanes Raceway coming? I saw the specs for that and it looked HELLA fun! Maybe I'll get out there for a track day some time... when I have a week to do it HAHAHA. 4400 miles for a trackday.

Ben, how's riding on the parkway? I grew up in Alexandria but didn't get the bike until I lived in Ohio & never got a chance to ride the GW pkwy... :(

Gixrben
Tue Jan 15th, 2008, 11:46 AM
The parkway is gorgeous man. Want to talk about a view of the Potomac River, that's it!

I-66 is the mainline into the city from out west but I took the parkway home last night in my truck, actually, because 66 is HOV-2 (must have two people in the car to drive it). I live out by Dulles airport so I take the roads through Great Falls, up 495N for two miles and jump onto GW from there... it's a great way to ride into G-town with some friends and posture with the bikes. Good ice cream down there too. GW isn't even remotely technical unless you're counting the asshat DC drivers, but it certainly is a pretty way into the city.

MetaLord 9
Tue Jan 15th, 2008, 12:12 PM
My folks live just off the parkway down near Mt. Vernon and I'd love to ride it in the fall all the way out past Georgetown just for the views. One of these days I'll be back there w/a bike...

Gixrben
Tue Jan 15th, 2008, 12:26 PM
Sure, so they are down on the southern part of it. Good views back there too. It's a beautiful road to hit up in the spring... unfortunately traffic is so shitty here that enjoying anything within 40 miles of the city is virtually impossible.

My folks owned a house in Lorton, about 10 miles south of Mt. Vernon. Used to go up to Ft. Belvior all the time when I was little. Too much traffic down there now. This area is slowly driving me insaner than I already was...

MetaLord 9
Tue Jan 15th, 2008, 12:33 PM
yeah, sprawl 'll do that too ya! It can't be any worse than riding on 495 or 395. You wanna talk about scary-ass traffic. It's a dogfight in the car, but I feel like I'd have to have eyes in the back AND on the sides of my head just to keep from getting merged into...

Where do you live in DC pilot?

Every been on www.DCSportbikes.net (http://www.DCSportbikes.net) ?A hotel, ha. The Capitol Holiday Inn on New Jersey Ave. NW of the Hill. I sure did enjoy the foot tour around to see the Capitol, Botanical Gardens, Library of Congress and the Supreme Court.

But I'm back in Colorado for a bit until I head to Chicago.

I met quite a few members of DCSportbikes, as well as Ruff Riders (Matty, I told your story, so you may hear from a DC member down the road) at the trade show but have not been to the site.

Pilot's our resident globetrecker.
And by globetrecker I mean "interstate flight to avoid prosecution". Ever seen the tour show "Globe Trekker"? I'd like to do that for a living.

When you getting back to God's country Pilot? Yesterday. I'm exhausted. Today is my down day from all the travel. Tomorrow I'm hitting up Dominoes for a delivery job:(. This motorcycle guy stuff if fun. But it doesn't pay much. I am enjoying learning so many things. It is fast-paced for sure. Things are looking really good for the MC biz. Future's so bright, I gotta wear shades.

Hell yea, Botanical gardens are pretty amazing. You were in a prime spot to hit some of the nicer parts of DC... at least all of the important stuff. I'm a half block SE of the gardens on the south side of Independence at a State Annex today.

The Ruff Riders... sounds like you hit up .com instead of .net ...

I asked a Capital Policeman standing at the ticket booth for the Capitol and he suggested the food court in the House of Reps office building. Man, that place was great and inexpensive. I had a Greek wrap, chips and soda for around $6.50. It was so much that I took it off to work at the convention center. Did you go to the motorcycle show?

Yea I was there Sunday in the afternoon. Had friends working the ducati, BMW, suzuki, and Cornerspeed booths. I got free tickets and chatted up the incumbent destruction of the MW class by a HW bike - Duc 848. Thank god im Am cause the Ex guys are going to be having a time of it... 134hp rated by Ducati, I've seen realistic low 20's from upstate NY on a conservative dyno... that's before the rediculous gains from pipe and PC3.

That's comparable to a Gix750... not a Gix600... anywho... yea I was there. Kinda lame, and the Bking is hideous

Last year was more fun, the 1098 coming out, etc.

Nate Kern was there on the BMW HP2... now THAT, folks, is a hot bike.

That HP2 was stuck in a corner near the front this year. I was working at the Lee Parks Designs booth right next to Honda and Race Tech-- were the vendors started in the back. Did you see the customer going crazy at the IPod dealer? That almost turned into a bar fight.
