View Full Version : Powdercoating Deal for CSC folks

Fri Mar 28th, 2008, 01:19 PM
As some may have seen I have done a whole pile of powdercoating on my F2 project that has turned out great.
I'm at the stage of my project where I'm finding that I have one or two things I need to get powdercoated at a time and I have to run up to Westminster to get it done. A couple of members have asked me about getting things powdercoated for them so I've decided to offer my services to everybody else.
If you're interested you can PM me, or email me at bjmcveigh@hotmail.com.
Prices:
Rearsets - $30 pair (includes pegs & heel guards) $50 including all the levers and shift linkage
Passenger pegs - $20 pair (includes pegs)
Levers - $15 pair
Triples - $20 each (top or bottom, doesn't matter)
Fork Tubes - $40 pair
Wheels - $100 pair
Gas Tanks - $100 (you must drain it and allow it to vent for a week. I'm not putting a tank of gas/fumes in the oven. :D)
Swingarms - $75
Frames - $150 and up. (They're a pain in the ass :D)
Any other parts that you'd like done, just ask me and I'll give you a quote. I pretty much just go by size so if you have a part that's about the same size as a triple clamp it'll be $20.
Conditions:
Please take everything apart. For example, remove the peg and heel guard from the rearset before you give it to me. However, I do still need the bolts to prevent coating the threads.
Parts MUST be clean. I can't powdercoat parts that are covered in grease/oil/road grime/etc.
Bearings must be removed. The oven will cook the grease out of any bearings so remove them first, or they'll probably be destroyed by the process.
Disclaimer:
I am not a professional powder coater, this is just something I picked up to do my F2 project with and figured I'd do a little on the side since I'll be doing my parts anyway. I definitely want everybody to be happy so I will GUARANTEE my work, if it totally sucks I'll give you your money back, or re-coat it.
Colors:
I get my powder from this place up north called Cardinal Industrial Finishes. Available colors can be found by clicking this link http://www.cardinalpaint.com/ and clicking the "Powder" brochure in pdf on the right side.
If you want something special, you're more than welcome to buy it and I'll lay it down for you.
Payment:
Cash of course
Paypal is accepted but please add 3% to cover paypal fees
I used a kind of satin black (~40% gloss) with texture on my F2:

Because I have to go up to Westminster it's over a weekend.
For example, I'm going up there next weekend (April 5 or 6) to do some work for myself so if you have a couple of things I'd do them at that time and you could get them on Monday. So, generally about a week.
Wheels?
Haven't figured pricing on wheels yet, they need a couple of coats and I believe the going rate is $100 a set (through Jim's guy at TFOG). I'd probably do $75 a set. :dunno:

ALL parts will be run through the sandblaster to rough them up, so to speak, so the powder will adhere really well. Existing powder coat can be coated over top.

Oh yeah, this does not have to be motorcycle parts only, I can powdercoat pretty much anything that's made out of metal.
I did the taillight guards on my Tahoe just for the hell of it. :D

I'm heading up to do some powdercoating on Saturday. If you want anything done this weekend and you want a color other than the black texture that I currently have you must get me your parts tomorrow.

Do you know if I will have to remove the inner tube from the outer on my forks for them to be coated? Im guess the inner tube cant be done via powdercoat?

I would recommend splitting them apart for a couple of reasons.
1) The oven temp will probably destroy the rubber seals anyway
2) Powdercoating isn't exactly a precision science so it'd be pretty tough keeping it off the inner.
3) Oven would also probably boil the fork oil and cause problems theres.
I can definitely try and do the whole thing and tape-off the inner tube, but I'm going to have to declare no fault if your forks look pretty put work for shit. :)

Yes, we can powdercoat over chrome, but it depends on the chrome, it may need to be stripped off first.

Yes, for wheels I need the tires and valve stems removed as well as the bearings knocked out. The oven will cook the grease out of the bearing, effectively ruining them.

You still doing powdercoating?
As soon as I get my Honda sold, I am going to be looking at getting the Buell's wheels coated black. At least the wheels, maybe a few other small parts (top triple, bars, rearsets, etc).
Honda is on Craigslist now, and it's probably going on ebay by the end of the week, so I'm looking at being ready to pull the trigger in a couple weeks.
What's the turnaround time?

Typical turnaround time is one day for small parts like rearsets, that sort of thing.
I only do the work on the weekends so as long as you got your parts to me during the week you could have 'em back Saturday or Sunday.
Looking at making a run the weekend of August 9th, and that will probably be the last time until the season's over.

The rearsets on the gixxer at the top of this page is the semi gloss. All of the stuff on my CBR on the first page is a flat black with a small bit of texture in it.

Picked up the frame and misc parts from Brian today.
Body work is at the paint shop still.
Time to start putting it back together.
Pictures were taken at 10:00PM in my garage so not the best lighting. (and my stained orange floor does not help the colors)
Frame/subframe and wheels are a champaign gold. Everything else is a textured black.
Brian did a great job!

Yes you can coat over chrome.
As for filling in the pits, it depends on how big the pits are and what powder is used. For really small pits, shouldn't be a problem.
