I am looking to make a serious career change in the next year. I am planning on going into fire rescue and have already done a lot of research. I'm sure some of you are in this field and I was hoping that you might be able to give me some advise or info to help me with this.

I'm a MT For Penske Truck Leasing and have a degree in Automotive Industry Management. My problem with my current job is that is in no way rewarding or challenging. I need something that will keep me working and having to better myself.

I'd reccomend going to a local Fire Academy (most of the local community colleges have them). Then get on as a volunteer with a small fire department/rescure team.
It's very tough to get on unless you already have your "foot in the door" as most firemen don't leave untill they retire.
Good Luck

Volunteer is the way to start. EMT training is also very higly recommended before you even start. PM Inkahootz on the board here. Her dad is a lifer and may have some great advice for you.

On a side note if anyone knows of anywhere(other than the golden arches) that is looking for part time night help. Got to work on the funding for this.

From what i've heard this is EXACTLY what you need to do, my dad is a volunteer in layafette with a CRAP load of experience from Nebraska. Now a days you need a degree, its nearly impossible to hired on as full time without becoming a paramedic which requires more school and training. BUT if you get onto a smaller department and get your foot in the door as a volunteer gaining the experience from that is SO VERY important and will enhance what you learn in an academy. This is ALL from what i've heard my father tell others who are looking at making a change in career and considering Fire/Rescue. I'm not an expert by any means but if you need any recommendations on depts in the area that are looking -- I'll get the info for you! Good Luck! From everything my dad has said about his 30+ years in Fire/Rescue; your are making a great choice -- just be prepared for hard work! :)

Conversely to some of the other posts about joining a small organization, if you're willing to relocate, some big cities are actively recruiting firefighters. I lived in Texas for many years, and I know the Dallas fire-rescue is hiring. http://www.dallasfirerescue.com/recruit.htm You may not be interested in leaving Colorado, BUT that's an option if it's your dream. For What It's Worth... :)

I am actually looking at a transistion to fire as well. I have been working with computers for far too long. Now that I have made it to Director level, I find that it is really boring work and I am an overglorified babysitter much of the time.
I got my EMT-B, IV and EKG out of the way. I also recently passed my CPAT. Either Paramedic or FF school is my next step. Make sure you are physically training as well. Look the CPAT up on Youtube. There is a video that shows the exact test. It isn't a walk in the park.
