Easy? Easy would mean it would take 5 mins to do without tools.
It would be easy if you removed the drain plug and unscrewed the filter. But that is not the case with the r1, you must remove the cowl. In my opinion anytime you have to remove something to get to a high maintenance area, someone at engineering was asleep in Japan.
If you must have to cover it, you use quick release fasteners that require no tools (like KTM). Not only do you have to have to remove about 10 fasteners using an Allen wrench, 2 of them do not stay in place then you must be careful not to bend they cowl too much because it is TAPED together with duck tape or some kind of tape. The fasteners around the radiator especially on the bottom are impossible to get back in the first time. The oil filter is horizontal (instead of vertical) so it spews oil all over your hand when you unscrew it then over your pipes (you must cover them with aluminum foil or something).
I know there are bikes that are harder to work on but from an engineering perspective and a customer perspective, Yamaha needs to think about ease of use especially on thinks like changing oil. There should be holes in cowling and easy routing and changing of oil. How about a little thought into just snapping on a hose (similar to this idea http://www.cyclegadgets.com/Products/product.asp?Item=QC) How about an oil filter that is not over the pipes? End of rant
