I think the idea of live bands was cool. And shirts...SWAGGGG!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure where we could have the BBQ that would also accomodate a band. :dunno:
I think commemorative shirts would be cool. I got the idea from a shirt I saw at Costco - it was for a car club's annual bbq. I spoke to the guy wearing it and asked him how things worked. He said that people would pre-register for the event for $25. That would cover food, drink and they would get the t-shirt as a souvenir. If somebody showed up who didn't pre-register, the same package would cost them a bit more (don't remember how much - I think he said the t-shirt alone would cost them $20  ). If we do something like that, I'm going to consider having it catered.

It works the same way as the park location. Company picnics are done at Cherry Creek and Chopfield all the time. No biggie, just an idea for something different. I had bikinis on the mind...

lol, economize, forget bringin a grill, bring saw raw hamburger patties, fire up the bikes, bungee cord the meat to the exhaust and go for a nice ride
10 minutes for rare
15-17 for medium
20-22 for well done.
Now...we need to talk about preheating the pipes :)

$25 per person for catered food... could get costly for some families, i know ours for sure.
Anonymous
Thu Mar 3rd, 2005, 02:04 PM
$25 was what a car club charged. Part of that cost was for t-shirts.
Kids would probably be cheaper, especially if they weren't getting a shirt (which would be an option).

As much as I can appreciate the whole "get together" feel of a pot luck, I'm totally down for a catered thing. I always wish I could do and bring more, but riding there, always seems to be a extenuating factor.
As long as the price for the catering stays reasonable, I'm all for it. Don't make T-shirt mandatory or anything like that. Plus, we all should have time to save a couple bucks between now and then.
And if it's seriously just a tight spot for somebody come picnic time, I'd be more than happy to spring for somebody's meal. I can't think I'm the only one who'd let somebody stay away, because of $.

I was kinda partial to the pot luck but then again, I caged it last time... damn. I never thought I'd say that.
Anyway, I'm all for reducing cost by bringing food but if we can do catering for a reasonable price, I'm game. Otherwise we can just ask for volunteers to collect food in certain neighborhoods and cage it in.

Don't get me wrong... catering is cool, but i highly highly doubt that we personally, not that everyone is like us, but we won't dish up $50 (just a guesstament) + extra for our kids... to go to a bbq, and a T-Shirt that i most likely won't wear but for pj's.
As a family, we'd go do something else for that amount of money... No offense to anyone, but that's how i feel, and others may as well.

Fri Mar 4th, 2005, 01:22 PM
I think an organized potluck (ie Bob says we need this and that and we sign up to bring those things). So that we don't have 500 hotdogs and no buns.To include additional member items not on the master list, like Ralph brought a smoked roast and I think someone brought a turkey last year.
Those that want to ride and cannot pickup a specfic item and those that show up last minute should put a few dollars in the hat to offset the costs.

I'm kinda mixed. I think catering would make things easier if it's cheap, but there's just sort of this community "gathering" type of feel if everyone brings something and we all throw down. I certainly don't mind smoking another brisket or two. Just seems like the pot luck type of thing is more like a "BBQ", whereas the catering seems almost too formal to me. We're not a formal group.

~Barn~
Fri Mar 4th, 2005, 04:19 PM
No, we definitely have to have it at a park, so we can throw the football around. Having The Breck cater it though, would be money!!
No reason why we'd have to pay anything near $25 if that were the case. Probably more like $8 - $10 I would guess.
Plus, I could go either way on the T-shirt. Definitely make them optional, if anything.
There is absolutley no reason why this thing can't be affordable for individuals or families.
Suki
Fri Mar 4th, 2005, 04:48 PM
sooo, if its at a park and if the park already has grills or if people bring their own... then if its catered can't the people that do not want to, are not able to, or for whatever reason against the catering just brown bag it? BBQ their own food?
I personally like catering because you don't have to do anything but stuff your face... but, i also am poor and do not want to pay, sure i can put a dollar a day away until then, but once i have that lump sum in my stingy hands... i'll be off to the bank or back yard to bury it!!
and i know that this takes away the feel of a gathering when some people are lining up for the catered food and others are grillin, but in the end we would all sit at the same tables, right?
Just another option for those that are not diggin on the catering. Also, if the brown bagggers want shirts, can those be purchased individually?
see, together we can make this world a better, safer, and fatter place... I LOVE YOU GUYS!!!!

As far as prices go, like I said before, $25 was what a car club charged (including shirts). I doubt our price would be anything near that.
Please let me talk to Ron @ Brecks about this before everybody goes off on a tangent based on an amount that has nothing to do with our picnic!
The reason I'm thinking catered is just because I think the turnout will be well over 100 people, and it will just be easier.
Combining catering with bringing your own & grilling (and/or pot-luck contributions) it is an idea that we can entertain. My only concern is how do we identify people that have paid for the catered food vs. those that have brough their own and/or are participating in the pot-luck? I know most people will be honest, but I'd rather figure out some sort of system. :?
The other thing I see here is that people want the option to buy a shirt. No problem. I just thought it would be cool to have an automatic souvenir, but I can understand the rea$on$ why some people may not be able to afford that, so we can make them optional.
Should I even bother looking into getting t-shirts done, or am I just wasting my time? Maybe I'm biting off more than I can chew here, or dreaming in technicolor, but I was thinking we could get a nice multi-colored image for the back, and maybe even have an art contest & vote for the best image.
Suki
Fri Mar 4th, 2005, 05:56 PM
what is this technicolor you speak of? haha
It is a bad thing that the honor system barely exists anymore, but we can also get my cousin vinny from the south side to break some legs if we see people in the wrong lines!! I just have to find out if i even have a cousin vinny from the south side...
maybe a ticket system could be set up? basically if you pay for catered food, you get a ticket, then they have to turn it in when they get their food.
I dunno, as with any large gatherings, its hard either way to determine who paid and who hasn't, especially at a public park. Hell we could pull a poetic justice and roll up on a family reunion and eat some chicken and colla greens!! Cousin Pete! MY COUSIN!!

HDave
Fri Mar 4th, 2005, 08:10 PM
Both pot luck and catering have pros and cons.
It may be a little cooler to finish a ride at a location that is loaded with grub and leave with a cool - t-shirt. The gravy would be bikini clad bike babes. I would pay $25 bucks for that any given weekend!
There is my $0.02.
Pick a date and it will be on my schedule.

I usually kick in 20 bucks to Bob, for all he does setting up the BBQ, and the costs he incurs.
To have one that is kick-ass-catered, for around that dollar amount (or less!) would be perfect.
For what it's worth, I usually kick in the $20, because I ride to the BBQ, and don't provide any food. :dunno:

Are you kidding me??? You can't think of it as your $25=only a burger and some chips. Think of it as $25=entrance fee to one kick ass party at the lake! With ladies, free catered food, bad ass bikes and good friends. This could be the best party of the year for some people. Maybe we could even get a cheap band? Or a DJ? I think we should meet in the morning for a day ride then meet at the lake for the party at around three or four. Then have a good time till late.

Just a little update before the official announcement:
Saturday June 25th is not an MRA race weekend, so the date is good. The only motorcycle event that's going on to my knowledge is the Pike's Peak Hill Climb.
I looked into catering and the deal I was hoping for didn't pan out, so in order to keep the costs down & not disclude anybody, we'll do the same thing that we've always done - I'll buy burgers & dogs, you guys can bring sides & desserts (pot-luck style) if you want, and donations will be accepted from those that can't/don't want to bring anything, if they feel so inspired.
As for the location, by the water (ie: Chatfield or Cherry Creek reservoir) would be cool, but there's a $6 per vehicle entry fee to the park ($7 for Cherry Creek), so I think we'll stick with the same location we've used in the past (Clement Park, Littleton, off Bowles, just West of Wadsworth).
I'll make the official announcement in the next day or so. 8)
