View Full Version : Hey V-dub folks, any golf owners?

Looking at getting a 97 VW Golf. Nothing special, Golf GL, 4dr, 2.0 engine, auto tranny, 155k miles.
The auto tranny is mainly what I was wondering if they've had issues with or anything else for this year or model (Mk3)?

Fwiw, my past VW ownership has been (2) GTi's (87's), a Jetta (87), (2) Sciroccos (a 16V and 8V), a Super Beetle and a Squareback and driving my Pop's Rabbit way back in school.

cant go wrong with the Vdubs mang.
I've owned damn near every thing they've ever made and had nothing but good times.

I had a '96 Jetta 2.0 (don't know if it's the same engine), but I never had any issues with the engine itself. I had it for ~80k miles

Nothing to add but.. Squareback!! LOL I had a Cal dub with the 1776cc kit and Webers and my bro had a lowered Squareback with dual Webers back in the day.

Metrodubs and Auto Union and Easy-E can suck a big fat cock.

MkIII's and MkIV's had a lot of VAG COM programming issues. Other than that they were decent. I couldn't tell you about the Slush Box longevity though.

Nice! Had an '08 (with the Aryan White paint).
The VR6 is a great engine, just sucks on MPGs with that heavy chassis.

picked up a 99 gls sedan (new body) 2.0 5 spd 116k for $3g yesterday! :) my wife & her back are soooo happy!

Wow, didn't see this got so many posts until yesterday. Ended up not getting the VW because the girl selling it took it in for an oil change and was told the tranny fluid was burnt and the tranny could go out pretty much an time and a Vdub mechanic I know said to avoid it. So found me an Izusu Rodeo Sport aka Amigo.

It's a Hodaka from the the 70's.
