Couldn't resist the weather today so I went on a little scouting trip. :D
May 5, 2005
CO7 -- Lyons to CO72: Lanes are pretty clean, but there is some gravel on the center line and at the edge. The intersection of CO7 & CO72 is pretty well covered with sand. May 2-12, expect 10 minute delays due to guard rail replacement. While they were working today (one lane was closed in the work area and there were flagmen), my delay was zero. It looks like they are starting at the top and working their way down. Today they were just above the red house at the Raymond turn off.
CO7 -- CO72 to Estes Park: Lanes are pretty clean, but there is some gravel on the center line and at the edge up to about Larimer County line. Starting around the Larimer County line and continuing most of the way to EP there is a sand trail off and on in the middle of the lane -- heavier near corners. Not difficult to navigate, just don't count on being able to use the entire lane freely, particularly on corners.
US34 -- Estes Park to Drake: Lanes are clean, but there is some gravel on the center line in spots.
US34 -- Drake to Loveland: I didn't ride this stretch, but there was a sign indicating that crack sealing was in progress.
Drake to Estes Park via Glen Haven: Lanes are clean, except for a few pebbles in a couple of corners. Both switchbacks are sandy!
US36 -- Estes Park to Lyons: Lanes are clean.
Keep an eye out for rocks that have fallen on the road. I saw a few -- all but one of them were off to the side of the road.
I rode through 2-3 very brief sprinkles (not enough to get the road wet). I suspect that will be typical over the next few afternoons.
As usual, gas is at least 25 cents/gallon higher in Estes Park than in Lyons. Fill up before you get to Estes Park!
