The forecast is dry, high of 60 on Saturday (7th) and mid to low 50's on Sunday (8th) with partly cloudy skies and mild winds.

It's time to get your motorcycle out of the garage and give it, and you, the ride both of you so badly need. 8)

I haven't garaged my bike yet this year WOOO! The only thing that is really shitty is all the sand and gravel on the roads so ride it safe :) If its gonna be that hot on Saturday I definately think a good ride is in the plans :D

Salida at whatever they're calling Il Vicino sounds OK. Pizza Madness in Canon City will always do fine by me, too. I have until tonight to dodge/blow-off a prior committment.

Well since there is rumor that RC will be coming down from Fort Fun and I'll be makeing an escape from The Peoples Republic --- we might want to meet say in Monument and head east and find pizza in Saudi Aurora or something down those lines. Deckers might be fun but maybe it's time to go somewhere else.

The last time I called the hospital, the emergency room personnel would only tell me that his condition was stable, which is a desireable condition. Considering the severity of the wreck I saw, only a few broken ribs is amazing.

--------

My point of view of Henry's accident:

Jacee and I were on our FJR today so we had a difficult time keeping up with the sportbikes. We were on a 4 lane highway heading uphill and approaching a long, banked, sweeping turn to the right. The road was 4 lanes wide, paved with concrete, and in good condition.

I was approximalely 1/2 block behind the sportbike riders ahead of me. There was a group of riders in the left lane, one rider in the right lane. I suddenly saw an intense cloud of blue smoke in the right lane. I shouted over our bike intercom, "Oh Shit!". The cloud grew larger and I saw a bike leap above the blue smoke cloud with a rider on it. Things happened so quickly that I was afraid there was a multi-bike accident.

Then, I could see a bike on the street, rolling, possibly twice. The rider and bike separated, the rider to the left, the bike to the right, just a few feet apart. Both bike and rider then slid over 200-300 feet (my estimate) across lanes of opposing traffic and into concrete barriers on the edge of the turn. Both hit the barriers hard, climbed them a little bit, then fell back to the pavement.

I was the second person to reach Henry. He was unconscious for maybe 2 minutes before he began to open his eyes and communicate. He asked us to help him. We asked what did he want. After some struggle to speak, he asked us to take off his helmet. I released his chin strap, thinking maybe he could not breath. Still, he asked that his helmet be removed. I placed my fingers under a rubber helmet partition to remove any pressure off his throat and windpipe. Still, he wanted his helmet removed, even though I had opened the face shield. He began to try to remove his gloves. I assisted him with that. Then, he removed his helmet himself. Soon emergency personel arrived on the scene, partially blocked the road, and began preparations to load him onto a stretcher. He was placed in the ambulance and taken to St. Anthony's hospital in the Denver area. A passerby with a pickup truck volunteered to help us load his bike into his truck which he and we did. It was taken to a motorcycle shop that Henry frequents as a client.

Analysis of the accident:
This analysis includes my observations, the observations of others in the group of sportbikes on Henry's left, and the police officer who analyzed the accident scene.

Henry locked one or both wheels for 220 feet (the police measured the skid marks) before the start of the turn. The officer told me that the skid marks indicated a speed of 80-90 mph. At the end of the single skid mark was a flaring of the skid as it got wider, then a gap of several feet, followed by 2 apparent impact points on the road surface. From there, Henry and his bike slid 200-300 feet (my estimate) across opposing traffic lanes before impacting the concrete barriers and coming to a hard stop.

Other witnesses related that Henry highsided his bike at the end of the skid. According to the lead rider in the group of the bikes to the left of him, Henry's highside occurred only about 4 feet in front of her and almost hit her as he highsided, then slid across the now turning road right in front of her.

This is the best I can remember the events that happened. I wanted to write them down and relate them to you before their accuracy faded from my memory.

Today's ride was a good one with good company and good weather. It is a shame that it ended in a wreck and and an injuries. I am very glad that only one person was injured in the wreck and, from Nick_Ninja's information from the hospital, has injuries that, although very serious, are not as bad as I had expected them to be.

Henry's injuries are NOT relatively minor whatsoever.

N_N,

I'm sorry if it sounded as if I trivialized Henry's injuries.

He hit the concrete barriers so hard I expected to find him dead. At the least, I expected him to have severe arm, leg, and possibly neck, spine, and head injuries. I am glad his injuries, although severe, are not as bad as I expected them to be.

I think he had a terrible crash and that his gear and maybe a little luck are the only things that saved him.
