I went to my dad's today to get a new rear tire put on the Beemer and got to ride through SUPER HEAVY snow for my trouble.
When I left the Springs at about 11pm it was a little cool but not bad at all. I headed North on 25 and it started to sprinkle around Interquest Pkwy. It got heavier as I got closer to Baptist Road and started looking like snow. It couldn't possibly be snow... it's not cold enough for that, right??
I kept heading north, on my way to work, and about the time I hit Monument I could tell it was definitely snow. But the road surface was fine for riding. I hit the top of the Hill still cruising at 8, errr 75, and started down the other side. After about 300 or 400 yards from the top, I could see almost nothing... and it only got worse!!! About the time I hit the big left hander a couple miles past the top of the hill (on the North side) I was down to about 50mph and watching traffic ahead of me to keep on the road... and it only got worse!!!
When I finally made it to the rest area, I was moving with a semi and a pickup and it was the only way I was able to continue. About 1 mile later, they had left me, the snow was heavier and I was slowing even more. It was near white out conditions: I was riding with my face shield all the way up and my eyes just peaking over the top of the wind screen to see where I was going. I was doing 20-25 at that point and mostly just keeping the solid white line on the right and the dashed white line on the left to stay on the road.
It continued getting worse from there. It finally broke about the time I hit the South side of Rastle Cock and switched to rain. So winter's definitely not over... carry your cold/rain gear boys and girls...
