New to the club and new to riding. I just picked up an '07 Ninja 650R. Have about 2,200 miles under my belt and trying to find people to ride up North. Would love to ride later in the day on Saturday but have a FB game to get to.

Would really like to get to know some folks up this way.

The cool thing about living in Loveland is that hwy34 goes right through the middle of town making it a nice shot up to Estes. So, have you been up Devil's Gulch Rd, which takes you to Glen Haven?

i'm game...and a plus is i live in greeley.
the GF has some thing's to do on saturday so it will be a run for the money for me.
a word of caution about devil's gulch road.
i was on it sunday and there was a fair amount of sand and gravel.
we can do a quick sweep and check it's condition or we can run a couple different routes from there.

let's try this again for upright's sake:slappers:

Wish I could go, but hopefully I'll be getting my new M3's put on that morning. If not, I'm in. Daemon, I'm VERY familiar with that spot. I stop there sometimes on winter nights when it's snowing just to hear the stream run, and have a cold one/smoke break. Very peaceful. Was there a fatality there some time ago? I've found some weird stuff there, like a memorial. I found a small stuffed animal, and a little glass angel on the tree there. The angel had been there for at least a month (I had it in an older pic and didn't even know it 'till later). Then I went up later with the X, and found it lying in the snow. It's a miracle it didn't shatter from falling, so I took it home and it's sitting on my shelf, safe. It felt like the thing to do at the time......

Have fun and be safe, just be warned that I was up there this last Friday (9/29) and there's dirt from shoulder repairs ALL over the apexes of the tighter turns going to Glen Haven. Be careful.....

daemon
Wed Oct 4th, 2006, 10:32 AM
that's the exact spot....yeah there was a memorial of some sort there.
i really didn't investigate it.
seem's a good person on you to care for one item from there.

we will most certainly be careful.
like i said i was on that road saturday and sunday.
sunday was the run all the way to estes.
wish i woulda ran it all the way on saturday,i mighta saved some of us from some butt clencher's.
the condition might change before then.
we will see

Wed Oct 4th, 2006, 10:49 AM
"Butt clenchers"...hmmmm...well, considering I was going like a :turtle: on Sunday, I made it quite easily around the gravelly spots on that road. Most of the gravel was easy to spot as I was going slowly round the turns and t'was quite easy to adjust my course. The only thing I didn't like too much was the huge amount of traffic on that day going up...you wouldn't believe the line of cars I had to wait for coming out of the road from Eden Valley:shocked: on the way up to Estes.

daemon
Wed Oct 4th, 2006, 11:00 AM
we really didn't see too many car's.
we were riding the road about 11am.
we did however apparently scare one driver as we passed them.
why don't people turn off when they know they are slowing traffic?
on poudre canyon i actually had a guy flip me off as if in defiance of me to pass him.

Daemon,

Well, considering all the shit that's happened to me since then I dunno if it was good or bad to do it. It just seemed the thing to do as I thought it'd fell into the stream and break or just break otherwise if I didn't. There was a little glass loop that was used to hang the ornament way up on the tree, and that must have broken, dropping it to the base of the tree later. I came across it months later after the snow had fellen, and saw a glint of something shiny. I couldn't believe as far as it'd fallen it didn't break. so me and the X took it home as a good sign. Maybe not, as she flipped out and walked out again soon after....

Yeah, I've had rednecks flip me off when I SAFELY and discreetly passed them in the narrows on the double. This after the slow f#cking a$$hole refused to use any of the turnouts. Gonna get me a Concealed Carry Permit, a paintball gun, and a .45. It'll be my discretion which to use while riding....:) Maybe I'll start with the paintball, and work my way up if needed!

daemon
Wed Oct 4th, 2006, 12:24 PM
i just popped in front of the said analole and clicked my brake light to strobe.
which in it's own right would tick anyone off!!!
he wouldn't pull over or give anyone room to scoot in front of him(packing close to other car's)so i ensured everyone got a chance to pass his **** arse up.

on another note:if you feel that the trinket has brought you some poor luck....return it.
spend a little extra time fastening it and say a few word's.
superstitious perhaps, but hey carma is carma

its okay, Daemon, you can post them, ill post more later in the week, i say that we can chop this up to too fast for conditions, conditions being the turn itself. i cant really tell you what happened exactly, i think i was knocked out for a sec, i remember just before i hit the ground on the left side, then i remember sliding on my right side, still with the bike, i kicked away, then flew into the ditch, i seriously think i would have gotten hurt if it wasnt for the barbed wire fence that stopped me. (the fence did give me a nasty case of whip lash) what i think happened was that when i hit on the left the bike flipped onto its right side, thats were 99% of the damage is: bent subframe, totaly screwed brake side rearset, ride side clip-on completly broken off, (and something wrong with the master cyclinder there as well), nice big dent in tank, and i think it is sitting ascew a little, but of course that could be my eyes, my "Mototeck" undertail everyone seemed to like is also toast. and then just a whole lot of road rash all along the right side, i also broke off the pig spotter there on the right side. only leak is brake fluid from the master cyclinder, although half of the oil cap was ground away.
on the left side, basicly just my kickstand was a little messed up, and my swingarm is scratched to hell, cant realy find any more damage to this side.
from the damage it looks like i did a highside, but i dont remember doing any highside, i dont know who was riding behind me, but i think we should ask him.
and fortunatly my bike never made it into the ditch only me, so i was just improving on what cathy has taught us. (proper ditch entry etiquette)
and i think it has been thirteen years since ive dropped anything(my dirt bike back then), so i guess i was due.

Don't know what the guy behind you saw...was he the one on the Triumph? I thought you were riding in fourth position? Anyway, all I saw was a cloud of dust coming around the turn and the car in front of me slamming on his brakes. Good thing I wasn't following to closely. I did have to swerve around him, though. Saw your bike in the road, and then of course you in the ditch. Wish I could help out more...hopefully Daemon has more info on the other guy.

Dang, sounds like your bike sustained lotsa damage. I wish you lotsa luck getting it back to pristine condition, though. It sure was a unique-looking R1.

i cant realy make up my mind on what i want to do, i am either going to take it to the shop, throw some money at them and get it back all new and good around the 17th(possibly, depends on internal damage of course) or turn it into a project for myself for the winter, i am completely confident i could strip it to the frame and rebuild her and show her the love she demands. but i dont know if i could live with out two wheels for that long, i dont get very many days off, so it would take me all winter.

as far as me laughing at the bike, i had just spoken with a friend who dropped his bike a week ago or so, and i was telling him how mad i would be if mine went down, so i was actually laughing at the fact that i wasnt mad.

One note though: if you didn't wash off all that brake fluid IMMEDIATELY after you got it home, you can count on all the paint it touched being GONE, and any plastic it sat on ruined. Hey Leviathan, you really SHOULD have been concerned about the fluid, as if it got on anything else (like the motor) that didn't get screwed up, it'll be f#cked-up now too. Plus, you really don't want that shit all over your garage and everything else. Looks like the tank can be fixed with a little bondo instead of having to replace it at $900+. Best of luck.

I am not a mechanic, nor have I gotten my hands greasey enought yet to be spouting off advice, but this one thing about brake fluid I do know. That's one thing that stuck in my mind when I bought my bike, as the salesman was going over all the major points, he emphasized the brake fluid and not letting any of it touch parts. If anything, he told me I'd want to be sure to have all other parts of my MC covered before dealing with it (if I ever had to deal with it). :(

grrrr...hate mentioning it, but yeah

Well, knowing the tank will probably run $950+ as based on Cathy's experience, that might push you over the top and make them total it. Doesn't look like any major damage to the tank. Can probably easily push the dent out, and put a ittle bondo on it, and it'll be good as new. Cathy's had SERIOUS stretching and wrinkling of the metal, yours doesn't.

As far as that turn goes, there are others further up that are far worse and tighter, eager to suck you in too hot even before Glen Haven. Just be careful.

Sweeping the turns: You know, someone mentioned to me that he use to ride in a place with a group that "stored" brooms on turns and the riders would pre-run the route and do a little sweeping. A little work by a lot of people goes a long way.

How 'bout a guy puts his bike in back with a couple gas-powered blowers and brooms, unloads the bikes at Drake, the rest jump in and they clean the route, come back, do the loop, load the bike, ride home?

Sweep on sweepas!

The club should just invest in one of these

I've seen them at auction for around $20k :)

i can see the expression on mr. law's face when there is a line of biker's at drake waiting for it to do it's job.
most likely it wouldn't take long before they figured it out though

Hey, we'd still be doing Joe Public a big favor! Think of it as consciencious citizens donating their time to make the roads safer for ALL motorists and bicyclists!

Just be careful.

i wasnt going to involve the insurance company, no need to have my insurance go up for the rest of my life. and thnaks for the concern about the road to glenn havn, but i have taken that road many times, i honestly dont know what i was doing when i entered that turn but i know it wasnt riding, i think it was one of those things that just had to happen, sober you up a bit, you know what i mean.
