I am going to be relocating to Fort Collins from Fort Lauderdale on Saturday, 12-2-06. My name is Fernando. Sadly my motorcycle will remain in Florida until March sometime. However I definitely want to meet people, even if it is for a cup of coffee. Email me if you would like at irunfromcops@gmail.com
Look forward to meeting some of you.
Sincerely,
Fernando

Welcome Fernando. Holy cow, you're in for a cold shocker...Ft. Lauderdale to Ft. Collins in winter...brrrr.:cold: Of course, we're still a hearty bunch...can't keep us off of the roads. Oh, and since you mentioned coffee, maybe you might want to meet us up at MotoHaus Coffee Co. on Thursdays between 6 and 9 pm. We'll be the rag-tag crew of people all huddled in one corneer...nah, j/k. We may be Northerners, but we're a warm bunch o' folk.
I'm sure the other Northern peeps will be greeting ya as the week goes on, but welcome.

Ill be the guy freezing his booty off. Just so nobody freaks out, I am leaving a career in Law Enforcement in South Florida, hence the email address. Play on words thing.
A little background, I'm 26 years old. I have spent the last 7.5 years working for the Broward Sheriff's Office in Fort Lauderdale. Decided it was time for a change. That is me and my bike in my signature. She is a 2006 GSX-R 1000 purchased in june and she now has 10000 miles on her. I don't stunt or do crazy things. Im out to first of all enjoy the change of environment and maybe just maybe scrape the edges of the tires just a wee bit.
My biggest question? When can we start riding regularly, temperature wise?
EDIT: She is my 3rd bike. I have been riding daily for 3 years after an extended hiatus from anything with two wheels. In the last 3 years I have logged nearly 24000 miles on my bikes. Im saying all of this just to attempt to establish the type of rider I am.

mmm...k, thanks for letting us know. I'm not as seasoned, but do enjoy riding in the twisties. We've got some great canyons, and a track close by if you are ever interested. As far as temp is concerned, I was out and about today at about 9000ft. above sea level...basically up on hwy7. It was freakin' freezin, but like I said earlier, ya just can't keep some of us off of the roads. I got my bike in late June...put over 3k on her, before dumping her in a ditch during Labor Day weekend. I've since put another 1600 on her and she still rides great. When the weather gets really hot, there's always the mountains to cool off in. Being so close here along the Northern foothills makes it easy to get up and away from it all.
Not to be outdone, though, when you get tired of the Northern mountains, you'll want to check out the central and southern as well. The CSC membership, as you've probably already noticed, is all over the front range.
You'll be having some fun in no time, I'm sure.

Yup...what GSXR~SNAIL said. You can still take a sportbike out on IMI, but it is small. The Pueblo track is more like 4-5 hours from Ft. Collins. Went down there in late August with Beotch (long-ass drive)...definitely a whole lot bigger than IMI. I haven't been out to Hastings, but there are plenty of racers here who have been...I've heard it is one hell of a track.

There is a thread on at gixxer.com about the hotbodies exhaust. Thats the way Im leaning. How are the local police about bikes? If they are going to cite me for an exhaust ill save up and get something more reasonable. Do our bikes need yearly vehicle inspections?

mtnairlover
Sun Nov 26th, 2006, 10:51 AM
The thing about higher altitudes is that your blood is losing oxygen. You've got to spend time in the higher ups just walking around and enjoying the scenery. You've also got to work those lungs so that more oxygen gets pumped into the blood. It doesn't work really well just going up and down by bike. That's why I stop when I'm up at the higher spots and take in all there is to take in. Gives me another burst of energy.
My Dad...old fart that he is (70 yrs old) lives at 9000ft. He spends 3 months out of the year in France way closer to sea level. When he comes back, it's always a chore getting his lungs used to the lack of oxygen. He pushes himself by chopping wood in order to open up the lungs and pump that oxygen.
Eh, just my .02, but it works if ya wanna really enjoy riding around in the mountains without feeling weary.

From my own personal riding, the local cops won't pull you over for something like a loud exhaust unless they're looking for a reason to stop you. The COHP loves pulling us over on the freeway through Denver and the Springs because limits drop down to 55. Although no one slows down, they pull us over and write HUGE tickets. I'm not entirely sure why, I think they're hoping we'll run. There's yearly registration, but not yearly inspections.

Well Fernando, welcome. A word of warning about the roads, they can be very deadly here. Drop-offs, sand, rock walls, armco, decreasing-radii corners, wildlife, Rednecks, cold roads/tires. Just be careful. We had a guy come down here from WA state a couple years back. He was crippled on his first group ride here after he'd been here only 3 days I think. Sad as hell.

Nice bike ten31. Are those wheels/rims other than stock? They appear to have more of a flat black finish as opposed to the more gloss black finish mine have. Other than the stickers, our bikes look identical.
BTW, what is your 10-31 code representing? "Crime in progress" maybe? I know it can actually stand for several things...
10-31
crime in progress
domestic disturbance
check for local warrants
suspicious person

Actually yes, the paint is manufactured by Dirt Enterprises and is made from equal parts chain wax, oil from roadways, rain, dust and dead kittens.
Seriously she was dirty as heck when I took the pic.
As far as 10-31, in the former agency i worked with it was "in pursuit" which is far less common than 10-80 which is the national ten code for in pursuit.

Yup, there are sections of almost every canyon road...at least up on the northern side...that are kinda crappy. Hwy34, which is also known as Big Thompson Canyon, was chip sealed over the summer. A section of it was sealed. The gravel used is of the smooth kind and a good amount of tar was mixed with it, so it isn't that terribly bad to ride on. Hwy36, which goes from Lyons up to Estes Park is still pretty nice. I don't think there are spots on it that are comparable to Poudre Canyon. Then, there's hwy7 leading from Lyons up and around the south side of some mountains over to Estes. It also branches off to hwy72 (aka the Peak 2 Peak hwy, I believe). Hwy7 from Lyons up to the 72 turnoff was recently repaved...it's nice and smoooooth. After that point, though, it gets rough.
There are many, many, many more canyons to try out. The ones I just mentioned are up here on the north end and quick to get to.
Some canyon roads lead way back into the high country. Others just skirt along the front range. Poudre Canyon will take you to roads that go back to Walden and to Steamboat Springs if you were interested in a long ride. Hwy's 34 and 36 to Estes will get you to Trail Ridge Road...ya gotta do a search for that one...and will eventually take you to the Western side and to Grand Lake and mountain towns beyond.
I could go on and on...but, you'll get lots of chances to explore next Spring and Summer.

Gear: @ IMI (kart track, like 1/2 mile long, 1-2nd gear turns) helmet, over ankle boots, and long sleeves/pants.
Pueblo (actual track, like 140ish down front straight) full leathers (one peice or full zip), boots, gloves, helmet, etc. and come this spring, a training class or other track certification (to prevent more incidents like the death of one of my closest friends on the tracks).

Funny pic I took of a MALE STEWARDESS, politely showing us where the emergency exits are. Best part of the pic is the black guy with his hand raised. What kind of question could you possibly have? Huh Mr. Man? Pretty damn self explanatory. We crash. We die. http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e200/soyelgaucho/DSC02236.jpg

Oxygen gets you high. In a catastrophic emergency, you're taking giant panicked breaths. Suddenly you become euphoric, docile. You accept your fate. It's all right here. Emergency water landing - 600 miles an hour. Blank faces, calm as Hindu cows.

You wake up at Seatac, SFO, LAX. You wake up at O'Hare, Dallas-Fort Worth, BWI. Pacific, mountain, central. Lose an hour, gain an hour. This is your life, and it's ending one minute at a time. You wake up at Air Harbor International. If you wake up at a different time, in a different place, could you wake up as a different person?

No, really. :turtle:
 But of course! We'll make a day and all go down together and have some fun at the track and learning what you can push. I am not the greatest, but I should be just fine to show you some lines, track basics and some do's and don'ts. IMO, it would be great for your street riding to better know where your limits are and what the bike can do in a more controlled environment. We'll figure out the details, but come spring, Pueblo will be requiring each rider to take a one time class down there (for like $200) in order to become "certified"...think that would also be a great thing for you girls to do, then make a track day out of the rest of things or something like that.
And Turbo contrary to popular lore of me being a 6' tall fatass bitch, I am apparently now a prick as well. Please address all future comments accordingly. :D and yes, that was fight club...apparently that one flew right over your new boys head.
Edit: Bat, hit me up on IM or something, I have some updates on things for you if you want the details.

Track class and day and ??? - all sounds good to me. The straights WILL suck mightily for me as everyone flies by but I only care about the turns anyways so there ya go.
