Purple Heart to be given at funeral
Service for fallen sailor is Saturday at Grace
The Daily Times-Call
LONGMONT — Navy medic Christopher Anderson will receive a posthumous Purple Heart on Saturday as part of the funeral service to be held at the family’s home chapel, Grace Evangelical Free Church. Anderson, a Navy hospital corpsman assigned to the Marines, died fighting in Iraq on Dec. 4 and was promoted after his death to petty officer. An admiral will present his family with Anderson’s Purple Heart during Saturday’s service, which is expected to bring hundreds of mourners, including a large contingent of Marines and other veterans.
The return of Anderson’s body to Longmont on Tuesday night drew hundreds of well-wishers along Main and Terry streets, and many said they planned to attend the service Saturday.
Also planning to show up in force are members of the Patriot Guard motorcycle riders. The veterans attend funerals of fallen military men and women to show their respect.
The riders also attempt to serve as a counterpoint to protests by members of the Westboro Baptist Church, who picket military funerals on the grounds that the United States tolerates homosexuality.
On its Web site, the Kansas-based church has listed Anderson’s funeral as one it plans to picket, and some city residents are upset over the church’s plans.
A new Colorado law co-sponsored by Longmont’s state senator, Brandon Shaffer, requires funeral protesters to stay 100 feet away from services, or 150 feet if using a loudspeaker.
The Rest in Peace law took effect May 26 when Gov. Bill Owens signed it.
Anderson’s funeral is set for 2 p.m. Saturday and will feature a military honor guard and a horse-drawn caisson.
OK guys, I don't care what your political view are here. I think anyone protesting/picketing a funeral is just plain wrong. I am inviting everyone to go on a Saturday ride to Longmont. We will be honoring a fallen hero and shielding his family and friends from protesters.
It might be cold, it might snow, but I will be standing there. There are PGR riders coming from PUEBLO even, (although they may be caging it). Please come out and show your support.

Thanks,
Tommy
