So I was bored the other day and had a spare '03 R6 damper in the garage, so I took it apart and took some pictures. Also have some pictures of the inside of a Showa fork leg, if you're interested.

Yeah, people pay me to work on their suspension. I'm not cruising for work (it's too freakin' cold outside!), just wanting to share some pictures of interesting things and spark some discussion.

so does this mean you can respring and valve my stock shock?!!

You got it, brother!

And I'd like to take your fork apart and take some pictures. Then, when it's warm again, get the whole suspension working really well based on stock parts- maybe just with different shim stacks- small, affordable changes- so people can have nice suspension without having to spend a fortune.

Thank you! So few people out there realize just what can be accomplished with reworked stock bits.

Well, it's not like the stock stuff (for the most part) is junk... What seems to be the case is that the aftermarket stuff has more of an adjustment range- so internally it doesn't have to be as close to ideal to start with. So, maybe we can find something that works well and doesn't break the bank.

OK, so I went to your webpage and you are speaking geek-speak. To wit -

"Note the progressive nature of the rebound stack and the digressive nature of the compression stack. "

which leads me to a "WTF are you talking about". Now for the good news. I live at Prospect and Shields, so you can come over and explain it to me over and over again using small words and a slinky.

On a serious note, I need to get my 250X suspension sorted out for supermoto. I haven't done much, but I am starting to push it to where there is chatter in the front end. Maybe someday we should get together and discuss things over beer and money?

The hardest you ever push that bike, is when you push it into the truck to go home :)

You are just jealous because it now takes you two laps to lap my bone stock, non geared, fat assed, slow 250X with your sexy 450R. But it is OK. If my bike had the kind of power your bike had, I would be afraid to ride it fast too.

Alright then I'm confused, you are saying that
If my bike had the kind of power your bike had, I would be afraid to ride it fast....
So since you're admittedly scared of my bike, it still doesn't explain why you ride yours slow. :dunno:

You know, I could ride faster, but it is my BIKE that is slowing me down. Yeah, that's the ticket. :turtle:

BTW, there was a post over on SMJ about a winter SM challenge out here in CO. Any idea what he is talking about?

Think he was joking, he is a local guy i think, he was out with us last time we rode i believe.

Yes, he is a local guy. He rode the MRA years ago (like '94 or '95 was the last one). His name is Geoff and he was out there when Eric broke his leg. I didn't go out last time you all rode, so I don't know if he was there. He rides the #85 yamaha.

No, this is good- the whole reason I brought it up is because I get sick of people that think they're too good to stop and explain stuff. I'm no smarter than anyone, I've just been thinking about this stuff for a while...

So, a progressive shimstack is one that provides more damping as more fluid is trying to push through it, that is... you hit a bigger bump so the suspension is compressing faster... Or, for rebound, the suspension is more compressed (for whatever reason- you were on the brakes harder or landed from a big jump), so the spring is more compressed, so the spring is pushing back harder and trying to extend the suspension faster, and thus trying to pull more oil through the piston/shimstack.

Digressive, on the other hand, is just the opposite. The more oil you try to flow, the more the shimstack opens.

Does that make sense?

Damn, too technical for me. I just go out and ride. I believe my sumo suspension is set up for dirt still!!!!!! So soft and cush.

Yeah, my 'tard feels much more like a road race bike than a dirt bike. Loads of damping.

Next time we're out, you should take a few laps on it, see how it differs.

Oh! And did you guys pick up my chair/stand that day at IMI?

Which day? I remember you sitting on an old school chair, and I mean it literally as it was an old wood chair from grade school.

Yeah, that'd be the one. Did you happen to pick it up when you left that day? It worked great for a stand- and a chair...

Sorry Dave, I did not pick it up for you. I think I remember asking someone if you had left it but someone at the track stated that it was one of the chairs that just sit around at the track for people to use. I would have kept it for you if I had known it was yours. Shit, it still may be there, maybe a little warped due to the weather.

Damn. Guess I'll actually have to weld one up...

And for sure I'll look for it the next time we're down there. Thanks.
