New to wrenching on sportbikes but not new to wrenching. I have been doing some research and need an opinion on a sproket and chain slection. I am working on a 1999 ZX9R abd thinking of a 15 front and 45 rear or 16 front and 44 rear what are some thoughts for a chain and sproket slection?

What is stock? 1 tooth up front is roughly 3 in the rear. Smaller countersprocket is harder on the chain. When you change gearing you throw the speedo off.

Not really sure what is stock as I just got the bike. I have noticed the rear sproket looks worn so I was thinking of replacing the whole thing (front/rear sproket, chain, and brake pads). I have this niffty table that tells what size sprokets does what for the speed of the bike, so I am wondering can put in the gearing I want adjust the speedo for the gearing and be okay. I know they have a part out that adjust the speedo for the gearing just can not recall it at this time. I am also thinking of staying with 530 gears or can I go with 520 (I know the 530 are more stable or have more to them then 520) if I do 520 do I have to do anything special. I guess the same question with the gears do I have to do anything special to swap out gears or is it just a simple cross over swap. Sorry so long.

You can get a speedo healer from performance cycle for @80 bucks. If you had a 600 I'd go 520, but on a larger bike I'd stick with the 530 and go with AFAM's and a D&D or RK chain. There is nothing special to swapping out to a 520 conversion.

I have a ZX-10 and from what research I've done I'm going 530, hardend AFAM sprokets, and RK chain.

Good Luck! :)

I have a 636 that comes with a 520 chain and 15/39 sprockets stock. I just went with a 14/42 renthal combo and it's a completely different bike.

I had a 15/45 520 chain, swapped back to stock 15/43 it was a lot smoother in the gears. I am going to a 14/46 520 this summer for fun :)

I have plenty of speeding tickets, don't need one of me doing 150.

Edit: Going with Vortex Sprocket and Chain

I'm assuming they're local? Online, speedo healers are 100 bucks before shipping (well, 95 and change)

my speedo is directly connected to the front wheel.... I don't think I need a healer :dunno:

Performance Cycle in Denver has them in stock for @80 bucks. I just tooo a look at them this past Saturday. :)

Yes the Honda F2 does have a speedo cable to the front, no speedo healer is needed for the PnP.

Vortex are still crap, especially if Ben is buying them. :)
