A GPS will not tell you fuel, good luck with that one.

Here's something a guy posted on advrider, might help? I dunno...

Anybody try one of these? My buddy in Germany just installed one. He says I can get open source English software for it too.

Roughly $450CDN to buy, but apparently you can get the plans and build one yourself if you like.

This GPS calculates fuel for you. you enter your tank size and average MPG, then it calculates it for you and gives you a graphical indicator of your fuel level. I really do not need maps and stuff. Mostly just need a Speedo, tach, and fuel.

I have a handheld Garmin that has a handlebar mount. It won't tell you fuel, but it does everything else. In this day and age, sportbikes don't have fuel gauges. I just have a light that tells me I need to get to a gas station. I just reset my milage everytime I fill up and know almost exactly how long I have until my light comes on.

My GPS unit was right around $100 or maybe even less. and then $15 or $20 for the handlebar mount.

I have a Garmin eTrex Vista C, that I had used for a variety of travelling in cars. I bought a handlebar mount for it. 30 minutes vibrating on the bars of my GS500 and it won't turn on anymore. Maybe the handlebar mount was only meant for bicycles?

I had that problem when I mounted it to my dirtbike. I only mount it on my mountain bike now, or put it in the clear plastic top of my tank bag.

The eTrex has a marine mount you can get that adds some shock resistance, but wouldn't help w/ the fuel gauge part.

How hard were you riding and what terrain? I was thinking of putting my eTrex on the dirtbike, but not if it's going to cause an issue like that.

There are few companies selling GPS mounts specifically designed to tolerate dirt bike abuse and absorb quite a lot of shock. I don't think a standard mount will do to well after seeing the level of protection some of these others provide.

It was a 250 two-smoke. I have an e-trex venture, and it would shut itself off when I was going fast. I was on a smooth dirt road and I was just trying to see what the top speed of my bike was. I ended up just putting it in my pocket and looking at it later. When I was on a trail, it seemed to be ok. I haven't tried it on my four-stroke, but I know it vibrates less.

My strategy is always to go semi-disposable. I just picked up a $100 Mag Explorist at tigerdirect.com for the DRZ (400E- no speedo or fuel dealies) to help me estimate speed and fuel consumption. It's not great, but I will have fewer tears when it gets stolen, broken, lost...
