no air filter huh? guessing it's not for the street.

could be the wastegate venting there instead of recirculating into the intake..?

Those are the wastegate lines. Wastegate lines never recirculate back to the intake (you wouldn't want exhaust gases in your intake), bypass valve lines sometimes do however (unless you are running open loop).

OK, er, how about a diagram? I come from the old days of gas goes in here, explosion here, gas comes out here.

Or aftermarket EGR if they are really eco-friendly

Mel you should put those on your car.. the birds would get sucked into the turbo before they could hit you.

OK, er, how about a diagram? I come from the old days of gas goes in here, explosion here, gas comes out here.

Check it out:

Here's a pic:

http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/turbo-plumbing.gif

Wastegates are usually built into the turbo itself, but sometimes they are physically placed in the exhaust line (called an external wastegate). They are used to control the boost that a turbo makes. When the desired boost levels are reached, exhaust gases are re-routed around the turbo so as to not "over-boost". If you didn't do this, your boost pressure would be pretty unpredictable and susceptible to "boost spikes" (boost spikes are bad because they can cause knock and extreme lean conditions within the engine (lean = more air than gas anything more than 12:1 while boosting is usually considered a no-no)).

Next you have the bypass valve aka blow off valve or BOV. It's the thing that makes the "woosh" sound on a turbo car when they shift gears. They are located in the intake right b/4 the intake manifold. They protect the engine during shifting or when the accelerator is suddenly let off while boosting. When making a shift or letting off the accelerator, the valve allows air to flow out of the the intake via the valve. The reason you need one is because when you shift or let of the accelerator you have high pressures in your intake (sometimes as high as 45 psi). When you shift or let off the accelerator, this pressure has no place to go b/c you have let off the gas and therefore shut the throttle valve on the intake manifold. So, with the BOV, you give the air a safe place to go.

On the car shown above, the wastegate exhaust lines exiting in the wheel well indicate an external wastegate. This usually indicates a big turbo that is making lots of BOOST, which equals :hump: and a little  on the side.

Hope this helped clear things up. Ask anymore questions if you have them, I love turbos. I actually get my car back from a shop tomorrow (3000GT VR-4, it's a twin turbo).

Tele.... Shouldn't you have a filter on the turbo's "Ambient air intake?" other wise, how would you filter the air coming into the engine?

ps. The 3000gt vr-4 or stealth used to be my dream car, but a friend beat me to it, and now I'm shooting for an NSX.

You typically run the intake lines from the airbox to the inlet on the turbo, that way, your turbos won't die from debris. However, if you notice on import tuner drag cars (such as the one in the first post), they run without filters. They do this because they don't care if they have to buy new turbos every couple of runs down the track. The idea is that an air filter is a restriction, and restrictions decrease horsepower. They are basically trading turbo life for horsepower. No daily driver tuner would ever consider doing this, however.

I f'n LOVE those GN's. My step mom had one and on the way back to Il. from a fishing trip to Wis. in the summer I was nice enough to leave some crayolas along the upholstered rear deck.
