The report was a little misleading.

The reporter said #1 cause was "Loosing control in the lanes" making it sound like the riders are loosing control and crashing.

The graphic read "Lane Errors", which probably relates to what I've always heard reported as the #1 cause of rider deaths, car turning left in front of motorcycle.

Definitely scary, but I question the validity. Some studies have shown that nearly 75% of fatal motorcycle accidents have rider fault. I feel that people too often use cagers as an excuse. Non-fatal accidents may be another story. And one of these studies was done by CSP in the last 2-3 years.

I am seeing older (circa 1981) statistics that are showing that:

75% of accidents involve collisions with a motorvehicle.

The most common configuration in these multi-vehicle collisions is a car turning left in front of a motorcycle. At 66% of these collisions. (Which makes for 50% of all collisions.)

Some more interesting stuff:

The motorcycle riders involved in accidents are essentially without training; 92% were self-taught or learned from family or friends.

More than half of the accident-involved motorcycle riders had less than 5 months experience on the accident motorcycle

Almost half of the fatal accidents show alcohol involvement.

72 percent of fatalties in operator age group 40-49 involved alcohol.

I get so annoyed with these "all motorcyclists are EVIL SPEEDERS" broadcasts. She introduces it by saying "This is a lethal combination. The VAST MAJORITY of motorcycle deaths happen on sunny, dry, spring and summer days." *pause for effect*

Well, duh. The VAST MAJORITY of motorcyclists aren't riding on snowy, winter days.

That guy cracked me up, sticking his tongue out at the camera as they put him in the car. Yeah, man, you're a badass.

Any of those studies differentiate between cruisers and sportbikes?

Just to clarify I wasn't calling you lame, I was stating that it was lame I was unable to edit the title. Don't worry I'm just as anal because I spent 15 minutes trying to change it after I caught it. http://www.cbrforum.com/upfiles/smiley/headbang.gif (javascript:void(opener.addSmiley('body1','http://www.cbrforum.com/upfiles/smiley/headbang.gif')); self.focus();)
