The new Kawasaki ZX-10R is here at Daytona. The team received their 2008 Superbike about a week ago and time was short to prepare it for this weekend's test.

The new Kawasakis turned a wheel in anger for the first time late on Friday afternoon as the track dried enough for the circuit to "go green" in more ways than one. Racers Jamie Hacking and Roger Hayden, plus Japanese test rider Akira Yanagawa all put their ZX-10R machines through the paces.

"It's new from the ground up," said Neil Freeman, Jamie Hacking's crewchief. "The improvements were the things we asked for. It's a lot of movement into the direction we finished the season with."

One of the first things noticeable is the massive swingarm, a focus area for the previous generation bike as the team tried a series of ever stiffening swingarms over the racing life of the machine. There's also a new fuel injection system with the overhead injectors ("Should help with throttle response," said Freeman.) The bike also seems smaller than last year's version, too.

Kawasaki finished the 2007 season with Hacking usually the third fastest man on the track (after Ben Spies and Mat Mladin) in US Superbike races.

But as of right now, their status with the new bike is still unknown. "Until we actually finish testing it, we won't know much about where we stand," said Freeman, "but it looks like a racer."
