View Full Version : Best Places to Ride to Eat?

Ghost
Mon Mar 17th, 2008, 11:08 AM
I was talking about lunch with a coworker about places we like to eat at, and places that are worth riding out to, or places to stop while on a ride and had the idea to simply post here and ask everyone where they like to eat. I'm just trying to see what places are around, and what places are out of the way but worth riding out to. What's good there, the price, the general location and if it's rider/bike friendly. Consider it the Riders' Zagat Guide to Fine and Cheap Dining.

Hopefully, we can get this stickied so next time you're hungry, or a group of us want to meet & eat, we'll know where to go and what to get.

I'll start with 3 local places I like and which you don't have to ride out of town to get to (you could even take your car if you wanted ):

1. Serioz (http://www.seriozpizza.com/ (http://www.seriozpizza.com/))
Location: Denver
Style: American/Pizza/Pasta & Full Bar
Average Price: $12-18 per person

I first went there a few years ago, when my friend's wife was the manager. She's moved on, but Serioz still has some of the best pizza in town, with a trendy-but-not-annoyingly-so atmosphere. Everything I've had there (pizza, pasta, calzones) has been fantastic.

2. Sam's No. 3 (http://www.samsno3.com/ (http://www.samsno3.com/))
Location: (2) Aurora and Denver
Style: American/Greek/Mexican Diner & Full Bar
Average Price: $10-15 per person

The downloadable menu is something like 7 pages long; so if you can't find something you want to eat, the problem is with you, not Sam's. They serve everything from breakfast (all day long) to dinner, with their omelettes and French Toast being some of the best around, as is their chili. Good portions at reasonable prices and the atmosphere is typical diner, so don't sweat dressing up.

3. The Rock Restaurant & Bar (http://tinyurl.com/2dm62a (http://tinyurl.com/2dm62a) )
Location: Aurora
Style: American/Mexican & Full Bar
Average Price: $12-18 per person

The Rock serves burgers, sandwiches, Mexican food, and has a separate full bar and patio. The restaurant and bar have TVs throughout, so though I wouldn't call it a "Sports Bar", you can still watch your favorite game while dining. They have a 4lb burrito that I've never finished, pretty good burgers and chili, and huge salads (if you're into that).

That's my 3 for now, if you think this is a good idea, just post your favorites and we'll keep adding to this.

Leadville via HW24 from Minturn. - Wild Bill's Hamburgers and Ice cream.

The service is dodgy at times, especially if they are extra busy. The burgers, rings, and everything else I've ever had though, has always been damn good.

103 Up and over Mt. Evans... heading into Idaho Springs, stop by Tommyknocker Brewery (http://tommyknocker.com/idahoSprings.html). Good food, good beer, if you can find a place to park... it's a great place to stop before heading back to Denver.

Sundance Cafe (http://www.sundance-lodge.com/) on the P2P in Nederland (south of town). Typical cafe fare, burgers, sandwiches, etc that are pretty good and not pricey. Sit on the deck outside and enjoy the beautiful views, and the ride before and after is great.

Not sure if this map will show, but here's one of the trips I like to take up to Walden and North Park...http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=2

I like both the RiverRock Cafe and the Moose Cafe. The Moose has some fair pricing and some really good sandwiches. Also, the outdoor seating is a nice switch from indoor and kinda like having a picnic, cuz they've got picnic tables. The RiverRock is a little more pricey and the ambience is different. They've got this huge antler shandelier in one part of the restaurant, as well as a huge river rock fireplace. Food is pretty tastey and this place was rated by Bill Clarke from Channel 7...http://www.thedenverchannel.com/travelgetaways/3511567/detail.html

There are a bunch of places in the region that we like to stop at on rides. One place that some of you are probably already familiar with is the visitors center on top of Trail Ridge Road. Very simple snack type food (although the pulled pork sandwiches are very good).

Its the view from the snack shop tables that are along the window that makes it a good place to stop and rest. The restaurant area has been completely remodeled for 2008 and will look great inside.

View from the windows of the snack bar...........

+1 for the Moose Creek Cafe in Walden, always stop there for a bite to eat when heading up Poudre and on then down around to RMNP.

a bit of a ride but The Sportsmans Texaco in Lake City on the Silver Thread scenic byway is a great place to take a rest if you're riding in that region - http://www.sportsmanstexaco.com/

I'm also a fan of The Brown Burro in Fairplay for a late breakfast.

and oooh yah, theres a little BBQ spot in Frisco called Q4U on the east side of hwy 9 that I stopped at for the first time this past fall.. great food.

anyone know any good eats in Kremmling?

I don't know of any places in Kremmling. I always seem to be skirting through there after eating somewhere else.

Grand Lake (http://www.grandlakechamber.com/dining.html)is also a fav stop. Poncho and Lefty's is a nice Mexican restaurant at the end of the Boardwalk. Then there's another place I like to eat along the boardwalk, but don't know the name. It's got outdoor seating...or at least that's where I eat when I go there. It's on the south side of the street/boardwalk half-way into town. Then, there's the Bear's Den, which I've never been to, but have seen motorcycles parked outside during the summer. It's as you are entering town.

I also really like the Grand Lake Lodge restaurant, but the lodge was closed last summer, so I don't know if it will be open this season, or not.:( They've got a kick-ass melted cheese French Onion soup. Sure to stick to your ribs for that all-day riding if you're into it.

yeah... ride into Silverthorne and go to the Red Mountain Grill!

all kidding aside, I've only stopped for gas and a bathroom in Kremmling. Last summer we stopped at the gas station/grocery store at the West end of town and the fried chicken smell in the air was intoxicating... didn't have any cause we were heading into Breck for dinner, but man it smelled good. May have to give it a try this summer.

Just remembered, check out Mango's in Redcliff (http://www.mangosmountaingrill.com/home.html). I know many CSC'rs have been there, so I think it's worth a mention.

Also, Bucksnort north of Pine, but you gotta ride a little dirt to get there.
(Unless it's been paved in the last few years.)

Dinky Dairy on 285 in Fairplay (looks like a glorified tuff-shed) is a great stop for a chocolate malt and a dog.

On the longer rides, I always try to make it to Vail. Blu's Beanery has, what they call Chinese Tootsie Rolls. Egg rolls skins stuffed with cream cheese, shrimp, and green onions. Then lather them in wasabi!

Or, in Steamboat, there are a couple of mexican taverns I can't recall the name of.

I found the Walcott Yacht club in Walcott has good grub, cold beer and plenty to look at outside in the summer. A decent loop for us Grand County folks, 40 from Winter Park to 134 outside Kremmling, to 131 south to Walcott. Then express route on 70 back to 40 over Berthoud. Won't take 9, that is sketch.

Speaking of Yacht clubs where there is no lake, the Rand Yacht Club (20 some odd miles south of Walden on 125) is a cool little joint. If its open its usually only in the summer months and Thurs. through Sunday.

The Grand Lake Lodge was mentioned eariler in this thread, I've heard rumors the new owners will have it open this year. If it ever stops snowing.

the "Sloppy Pocket" at Gooseberry Inn is ground beef and cheese in a tortilla, grilled (maybe fried... I'm not sure) into a sealed up 'pocket', and smothered in green chili, then smothered again in cheese. You get lettuce, salsa, guacamole, and sour cream to add on yourself... it's yummy, but I'm sure it's not healthy!

Nice place is on the Poudre, I can't remember what its called, but I stop there every time, you can make a killer loop. It is something, springs and resort. Kind of a drifters place. Also there is a nice spot called Drifters, right at the near Gould as you are about to head into Walden. Take 125 South and there is a great road to open up a bike. You will end up in Grandby, head West and on 40 Past Kremmling, and you can stop at the Rocky Mountain Bar and Grill. Also a drifters spot, killer wings and cheap as hell beer. After that, head about 10 miles west and turn south at the Kremmling reservoir. Fresh pavement and a rode that turns itself into knots(not saying the number). Once you are down from there, you will end up at a junction. head south towards Wolcott and there is a great spot to eat next to I-70 called the Wolcott Yacht Club. Loop is long around 450 miles. But only maybe 90 miles is a straight line. Depending what way you take, there are some nice roads around vail and stuff but that only adds to the pain in your butt.

After reading about Efrain's I remembered a place straight in from Coal Creek Canyon or HWY 72(which is an awesome ride) there is some of the best green chili I have found, way better than Santiagos and comparable to the Boulder Efrain's.

It's a place called G's burrito grill, and they have margs that are killer too. If your coming in from 93 take hwy 72 east, then go left(north) on Indiana, make a right(east) at the next light which is 96th and the road twists and then you hit a stop sign but just keep heading straight(east) until you see the diamond shamrock on your right. It's directly on the left of the gas station. The closest cross street is 100th and Wadsworth.

I am a mexican food critic(uncertified of course) and this is the best quick mexican I have found here in the front range so far.

Sangrita's (http://www.sangritarestaurant.com/) in Westcliffe. If you click on the link and click on the "Collaborosity" link on the main page, you'll see what the restaurant is trying to do to change up their menu every so often. The atmosphere there was great. I liked the decor, too. I wouldn't mind going back to sit out on the patio next time.

I had the Blackened Chicken pita with spicy ranch. The ranch was homemade...so not the typical store brand of spicy ranch. The fries were hand cut, so not the typical frozen fries.

Gary (GuitarX) had the Greek Burger shown below -- featuring feta cheese and olives.

Mountain Rose Cafe (http://www.mountainrosecafe.com/index.aspx) in Winter Park -- "Redneck mountain fusion with a dash of hippie love."

I had the Venetian Goddess Frittata.

This little cafe can be found closer to the far end of town. Amazing food. Great service. Very creative chef (http://www.mountainrosecafe.com/about/) and they make and serve homemade bread.

Was up at Lake Branaird (Ward) last weekend and we stopped here for lunch. Damn, they had huge portions for low prices. The food was good, the staff attentive. The only drawback was it is apparently a Hardley hangout, too.

+1 They seem to like when we stop in, never having any qualms with a large group (10-15). Zokas is in the town of Pine.

This has probably been posted already, and I'm glad the Mountain Rose (mtn air lover) is listed here for breakfast, but another great choice if your coming to WP is Lewis Sweet Shop! (sure alot of people have been to it) I cant get over there tacos. There pulled pork tacos are consistently good and cheap. The current owners Peggy and Bernie are extremely friendly and enjoy the presence of bike people. Great Place!

Bump, for a few places I recently found:

El Rancho Bar in Durango, CO.
A locals hangout on Main st that has a great basic (large) breakfast of eggs, hash browns, and meats served with a stack of toast from the Durango Diner next door.

Pachellis in Monte Vista, CO.
Huge meatball sandwiches. Fresh salads and pasta. They close at 3pm but somehow each year we get there by 1pm and end up closing down the joint. The owner usually piles on the food and gives us all the bread we can eat.

Serious Texas BBQ in Durango, CO.
Great bbq, seriously.

Christina's (next to Best Western) Durango, CO.
Their ham steak breakfast .. for carnivores only; dinner plate sized bone-in slab o' ham, plus the usual helpings of eggs and hash browns. Southwestern green chilie served up right.

W Cafe in Gunnison, CO.
Open faced sammiches with mashed taters and gravy for lunch. Yum!

Q-4-U, Frisco.
Don't order their peach cobbler unless you have a big tankbag to take it home.

Don’t be mad at me. Alright... I have searched and searched... Is the road to Bucksnort paved or not? I am headed up tomorrow to be there when they open. I am taking my wife as a passenger and not really excited to have to deep wash my bike AGAIN. If it is not paved, how long is it dirt/ compacted asphalt?
Anyone want to have lunch?

I had heard it's sort of a loose chip seal now. Went through it early in the summer and it was a mix of old compacted asphalt and some packed dirt, supposed to be better now. Rideable on a street bike but you don't want to be pushing it.

It is just as you say, rough asphalt covered in areas by dirt. Not bad though as long as you are going slow. Saw Bucksnort, and went back on down the hill and had a great lunch a Zoka's.
Glad I went, what a cool and bizarre road Bucksnort is on.

My son and I just had some awesome BBQ at a new place in Superior, Wayne's Texas BBQ. It's near Target and Office Max.

They are open on Tuesday through Saturday and they are open until they sell out of food for the day. It's a bit pricey, but the food is excellent.
