Warcraft, or more specifically World of Warcraft, is the #1 massive multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG). Well known for it's vibrant yet efficient graphics, diverse and fun classes, excellent quest system, and deep story line. Commonly referred to as WoW, it has exceeded the #2 MMORPG (Everquest) in substribtion base by millions, currently boasting 10 million subscribers.

I played it off and on from beta and though I enjoyed the game I got burned out rather quickly. The end-game is very raid oriented, meaning that you need to particiapte in large dungeon raids in order to get the good equipment so that you can be uber. Those raids often took hours and hours and if you couldn't attend then you basically got left behind. Eventually your equipment was so crappy compared to everyone elses that you didn't stand a chance to survive in a significant encounter (PvP or PvE).
Speaking of PvP (player versus player) their implementation always seemed half-assed. Just an add-on for those that wished PvP action - so it was a disappointment for me and likely another reason why I didn't get addicted to the game.

I do play board games and role playing games. Shadowrun session on Sunday. It's almost as bad. You have the core rule book and then rule expansions. Street Magic, Augmentation, Arsenal, and Unwired are available at $35 each. Not to forget the fluff books and adventures.

Still, at the end of the month I still have the book :)

Same here. The RTS I really got into though was Total Annihilation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_Annihilation). That game is still fun to play, 11 years now after it came out. Truly a game ahead of its time. The guy who developed it came out with a (sort-of) followup recently, Supreme Commander (http://www.supremecommander.com/). Unfortunately I need to get a new machine at home to play it.

And because of all of this I only qualified for the final year of my degree by 2%. I used to score first class honours marks before this game. I used to be a size 12, now I'm a size 18. I was a black belt in taekwondo, now I'm a couch potato. I've hurt so many people around me and I have no idea how to make it up to them - and I haven't had any sex in 2 years.

No more. My subscription ran out this morning, and I've uninstalled the game. Yeah that pretty much sums up the lives of many people I used to know who spent every waking moment playing EverQuest back when it was the shit. If they weren't playing it, they were spending their time talking about playing it. It was crazy to watch so many people get sucked into spending their lives in virtual fantasy.

I never played it, or WoW, or any of these massive virtual-world games, and won't just because I've seen what it literally does to people who spend any time getting good at it. fuck that!! I like to get outside once in a while, be active, ride motorcycles, fly airplanes, get laid, and do any number of other things that are far more enjoyable than pretending to do any of it while sitting in a chair eating Cheetos and drinking beer.
