as a few of you know, a group of us went out to ride the dragon last june

we are planning on taking the trip again next year. some dates have already been talked about, and spring is looking like the time everyone is intrested in so far.

we are going to do a few things diffrent this year as far as hotels and time at the gap. we are going to try to find a house on a nearby lake to rent for the week. this would allow for some relaxation between dragon slaying events :)

if you are intrested in going on this trip now is the time to start planning and saving your pennies. i know a few of you missed this trip last year but expressed some intrest in the next trip. so post up and lets get this thing planned.

:D

I'm down for just about anytime as long as my boss lets me have the time off work :D

I need to find out Beth's school schedule as well. What tentative dates are we talking about so far?

Beth's spring break is March 21st through the 25th, and the weekends before and after that obviously.

note taken

those dates may be a wee bit early because of the unpredictable weather in March

we'll see though

Searching tonight for information.....was thinking April or early May to ensure good weather, but I would like to be there more spring than summer this year.
I will also start searching for houses out that way. I know wahoowoman wants the house thing so they can relax while we ride......not driving down to Mertyl Beach again....TOO FAR ;)

May 5th is Beth's last day of finals. The 6th would be the earliest that her and I could leave.

Emails sent to several places...found some sweet locations with great activities and amenities. This will also play a part when we go depending on availability of lodging and also what is going on at the Gap---I don't want to be sharing the dragon with 100 cobra mustangs or anything like that ;)

I'll be watching this-here thread pretty carefully. Since MotoGP at Laguna has a 5 year run contracted, I might skip-out on that, and see about something like this.

I know you guys raved about it last time.

Found some great looking properties and waiting for some phone calls and emails. As Gramps and I have spoken we are looking at mid April for the trip...week long. As far as my plans.....several days of riding divided up with doing some more of the local activities in the area. It is beautiful there and want to enjoy some of that too (or so I say that now, probably won't get off the bike once I am there)
- whitewater rafting, fishing(one property has this on site), casino nearby (Barn I am thinking of you bro), horseback riding, boating, hiking, etc....LOTS to do. Have to have a place the ladies can do some things while we are riding a few days. Anyway I will keep everyone posted on details....as will Gramps I am sure.
Tentative Dates I am thinking about:
Depart on April 15th or 16th. In NC until the 21st or 22nd and head home.
Any further ideas welcomed......this is gonna be TWICE as good as last year! :D

the honda s2 club is usually the first planned event and it looks like they have planned for the 22-24 of april

so we are full on for the 15-22

this is one of the houses i have been looking at:

Alright.....
I have messages into 5 different places for lodging (renting a house) This willl be MUCH cheaper and LOTS more room. So soon as I hear from them I will get you all more details.
I am curious who all is still thinking or planning on this. All I know right now is Myself, wife, Gramps, wife, and ???????????
I can't wait to get some better photos this year and more video action!

I would like to go, but probably won't get too. Have to talk the wife into it first, then find the money to be able to afford it, and find talk one set of Blake's grandparents into babysitting for the week. Not totaly impossible but could be challenging. If I don't go I have a trailer that I might loan out.

I will be returning phone calls tomorrow to a few places that left me messages. After we decide on our lodging situation and we decide to book the place I will need more of definite "yes" or "no" in order to calculate costs. I know situations can come up, but if you plan on going and say you are going once the place is booked I need that commitment. The people that go, the cheaper as well (at least for lodging and gas money out there) As Gramps said, don't panic on trucks or trailers at this point. We will see how many bikes are going and my initial though is that we can handle it (Tom and I) then we can plan on vehicles to transport people. Should have more details next week.

Alright we have the house reserved that we will be staying at. Well, we are deciding between two of them but both will work out nicely. Indoor garages on both, full kitchens, large homes, deck, bbq, hot tub, game room, etc......just depends on which one we go with. What I need is definite people wanting to go. Right now I will say $150 reserves your spot at the house for all 6 nights! Yes, it is very CHEAP! So start responding but once you pay and say you are going.....you have PAID. I will not get to a month before departure and then someone cancels and everyone has to come up with more $$. The amount could change depending on the nubmer of people going, but this will reserve your spot. You can talk to myself or Gramps (Tom) if needed. :D

Gramps
Mon Dec 13th, 2004, 07:06 PM
sully-

costs for the house for the week will be 150.00

that will reserve your spot

as far as getting the bikes there, don't worry

we have a few trailers available at this point, so plenty of room

the gas cost getting out there and back will be the biggest expense. it will cost somewhere in the range of 200.00 per person probably.

then figure in food. which we are going to grocery shop when we get there and cook at nights so the food cost will be minimal. maybe 75 for the week.

then figure in a few incidentals and some souviniers and you are at about 600.00 for the week tops. pretty cheap vacation if you ask me

and it will be great times. good riding and good people to be out there with. :D

AAAAAAAlrighty Then! The house has been booked on my credit card. Talked with the owner (Ron) for about 35 minutes today, a great guy. His website is Tail of the Dragon (http://www.tailofthedragon.com)
He lives my the homes, they have 2 rentals. Also Kill Boy lives there as well......Kill Boy Website (http://www.killboy.com). Kill boy will be at the Gap Saturday and Sunday and can take photos of us and possibly some video. If you have not seen his work he is AWESOME! I am waiting to hear from him specifically today or tomorrow so it is set up with him. Ron will try to ride with us to for one day. He is extremely friendly and can't wait to meet all of us. He was in Colorado this summer for some trail riding and loved it here. The house should be great and have game room, hot tub, indoor garage, etc... He did state that the trees will just be starting to leaf out, which means seeing through corners will be GREAT! Also he stated that the red/blue (cops) will not be even patrolling at all during this time. I know myself and Gramps are stoked for this trip. We will get a number of people who are going to figure in total cost of the house. We will then also figure the traveling, trailers, cars, etc.... I think the trip will be a little less than what Tom stated above, but fuel will be the biggest expense expecially with our prices right now, maybe they will go down. The house has 7 single beds and a couch. He said they have had huge groups and people set up tents, bring campers etc.... I am not worried about sleeping, as a sleeping bag works for me. Probably take some air mattresses too! Anyway that is the details I have right now....Oh, we can also go to Tail of the Dragon Wharehouse right there and get discounted clothing and other stuff since we are staying at their lodging..... :D

Alright.....from the talk of Tom in the tent with monkey love going on and now "chubby" talk I am a little worried. After the first of the year is fine for payment. Keyser is also doing that as well. To my count we have 7 riders so far....possibly more. That will be GREAT!
Nate was the first to get me money...its in my hand.
SOOOOOO, for being the first to get money he wanted first pick of beds. I believe this is only fair, so Nate you will be sharing a bed with Tom, and most likely it sounds like in a tent in the back yard
Just FYI, all of the beds from what I can tell are singles. Don't know why they set the house up this way, but I don't care as long as there is a place for a sleeping bag. Like i said I will take a air mattress or two. There is also a couch of course.
The countdown begins and more detail to come at a later date. ;)

People still planning on going:

anyone else. I am going to cut off the list at the beginning of March so we can plan driving, trailers, etc....
if you decide to go after this you are still welcome to go, but will have to arrange your own transportation if we don't have room already with our plans in place ;)

No worries John.
Oh, something that has not come up before and we can discuss more later. I would ensure you have a new set of tires on the bike. We took extras last year and Gramps had to mount up a rear tire at the dragon. Tires probably won't get as hot, but if you have a new set on you will be fine. I am probably going to use some DOT this year
Also as far as gear. I highly recommend full gear! The safety factor is huge and want everyone to be safe. If you don't have full leathers that is fine, you are not going to be eliminated from the trip. But I would ensure you have some good protection......as always stated, dress for the crash not the ride.
Knowing who is going I don't think any of this will be an issue. Oh, if for some reason you don't feel like wearing a helmet....don't plan on loading your bike up on my trailer, but again, I don't see this being an issue ;)

Yeah, I've gotta work on getting pants and boots before we head out. I've got an extra jacket if anyone needs (although it is mesh/leather) and an extra pair of gloves...

If anyone runs across any good deals on leathers or boots, lemme know!!

Ok guys ... in the interest of properly-divided forums and what not, I think this thread needs to move to the Trips and Touring forum. This is open to anyone who wants to go, from what I can tell, and is a bit farther-reaching than the northern group. ;) I'll leave the shadow topic in this forum however.

Yea, I have a call into him, thought all the beds were twin size, but according to the floor plan they are full size. Either way it will be sweet.
I do have claim on the down stairs room though (full bed one)......figured that is my reward for setting this up. I also am given Gramps and his wife the option of the other down stairs room for them, unless they want to do something else, figure that is only fair as well. We can probably do some bed moving if needed as well, but we can figure that out later as we get closer or get there. Oh if you don't want to sleep inside you can join Tom and Nate in the tent too

Tom get's a bed with his wife AND a tent with me? Isn't he just special :D. I'm guessing that the lower-level suites are reserved for the house chef's? I'll have to bring my old dinner bell along so you can ring those of us up in the deluxe suites when breakfast is served

I have no problem cooking for the group......that is if you like mac-n-cheese, cold cereal, and tv dinners  No really we will eat like champs out there. Once we get closer we can plan dinners and stuff. It will be so nice with the house having a full kitchen to prepare the meals. This will save money and easier in the long run. As for Lil' Diddy shackin up with you, Tom is a very generous that way

Gramps' counting abilities aside, 64 days sounds a whole lot better than 5, 529,600 seconds. And let's not forget that the precision of the Wahoo Clock (the master clock for this trip) is limited to +/- an hour or so .

Ahhh... The DRAGON!!!!!

I've been there 3X... What a blast! A corner 'bout every 50 yards... :)

Are you also going down to do TWO (Two Wheels Only)? I've "heard" it is even better than Deal's Gap.

Last time a friend was behind me & then disappeard. I turned around & there were a couple people helping him up & one of his shoulders was 'bout 6" lower than the other due a broken collar bone. I asked him what happened & he said, "Dam & I was just getting in the groove!". I replied, "NO, I'ld say you just went into the ditch!!!!" :D

Watch out for COPS!! My advice is to dress in-cognito. Basically don't look like you go fast!

HAVE FUN!!!!
