was looking for some Dream Theater vids and stumbled across a clip from one of Mike's older instructional videos.

And while I agree that Neil Peart is an amazing drummer and many hold him as the best. I will forever view Mike Portnoy to reign supreme when it comes to drummers. I've seen others like Terry Bozzio and Dom Famularo do just as well. However I think Portnoy is freakin amazing with his timing(odd and even).

If you're a fan of drummers than this is a good video. One of my more favorite songs, to just let the band play. I've never been a huge James Labrie fan, so when he's not singing I just enjoy Dream Theater even more.

I agree, it's sad that alot of great bands don't get airplay and then we get stuck with bands like Linkin Park all over the radio. I get stoked when Kilo(here in the Springs) plays a Dream Theater song. I'm usually at work, so I just crank the radio up because it's not often I get to hear them on actual popular radio.

As for me, I got turned onto Dream Theater at a young age. About 14 or 15 when I started playing the guitar. I got into all the super technical bands and musicians. Prog Metal is definetely one of the better genre's of metal.

progressive rock(metal) has a tendency of kicking you in the balls.

i do have a few fave bands that i prefer,but most of it is goth type stuff.
my taste in music varies from day to day and i must admit that i have been guilty of listening to too much radio play.
wish there was station that actuallys had the cajones to play what was requested from all people....including all genres of music.

Portnoy-is good at counting. to technical, memorizes everything with no feeling. then again, that's prog rock?
Bozzio-has better independence and puts a little feeling in it. better player.

yeah I'm 28 now. Got into guitar playing when I was 15. Been doing it ever since and I absolutely love many kinds of music. The older I get the more I tend to like to compose flamenco or latin type music now. I've got alot of my metal days out of me. Doesn't mean I don't listen to it still. I listen to metal all the time, however playing it has lost some of it's steam for me.

Oh yeah man, Fates Warning rocks! same with Queensryche. There are alot of prog bands out there that are great. Symphony X anyone?? Stratovarius(sort of prog, more power metal than prog though) and Shadow Gallery. The kings of odd time and songs you can't stand to listen to - Spiral Architect

How is Opeth Norwegian Black Metal?? Nothing of Opeth's sounds like Black Metal, might get away with calling them Death metal.

When I think of Black Metal, Dimmu Borgir, Emperor, Cradle of Filth(barely), Dissection or really crappy bands like Gorgoroth, Mayhem, Dark Funeral. Really any black metal band is for the most part crappy. You've got a few standout's but as a whole Black Metal has terrible musicians.
