The CEO of Intel says netbooks are only good for an hours use....I think thats true.

Think about this, what happens when you need to put a CD of some kind in? Or when you run out of the few Gigs that it has? I used to be a fan of the EEE and netbooks, but I'd rather pay a few more bills for a fully functional computer.

A friend of mine has the 7" version and loves it. She uses it mainly for research, ignoring our professors, and email while on campus. Granted, I just use my ipod iTouch, she doesn't have to scroll frantically across the screen to view an entire page.

yeah the point of me askin about the EEE is I dont have $$$ for a better computer.

The lack of CD/DVD slot is the main reason I haven't gotten one yet. Read conflicting reports as to if you can use an external drive. Oh, and not enough memory to load WarCraft is a bummer. Still looks like a fun toy though. Would be great for storing pics/blog on the road on a motorcycle trip. Love the size--I hate the 50lb laptops we have here at work. Hauling that nonsense through airports sux.

i have nothing to add other than that would be a great purchase for my 12 year old for school work.

figure out what you need a computer for, what are you going to use it for, what do you need it to do for you, etc and you'll decide if it's worth it. Siate "needs" something right now only for writing papers, checking/tracking his grades and school progress online and checking email. so if all you're using a computer for is something like that, then it'd probably be a good buy. if you want a computer for bigger things like storing/editing pics, gaming, running lots of programs then you may tire of this after awhile or outgrow it and then have to shell out more money later to upgrade.

Find an older Dell D400 or D410 on eGay and go that route. Small, good battery life, external CD/DVD and you can get a HUGE HDD for it. I am typing this post on mine running UBUNTU 8 and it FLYS :) This is going to be the laptop I take on my off road trips.

I would think that for 300 bucks you could probably appeal to the hardware I.T. nerds on the board to acquire you a used laptop with some solid specs that would meet all your needs.

depends what you are going to use it for.
it is a great road warrior pc or as a second laptop.
if you upgrade the wireless card in it, it makes it better.

i wouldnt use it as my primary laptop.
but as a web surfing, dvd watching on the plane, it is great.

better than lugging the 6lb laptop around.
it is still lighter and faster than the D410
the solid state drive is fast enough and light but small.

the OS is linux variant.

I/ve been looking at netbooks for a while now. Basically, it boils down to 3 choices for me: MSI Wind, Acer Aspire One, or eee. I have to be able to run XP or an emulator (WINE) for the Dynojet software. Battery life in the most recent test I have seen is an amazing 5+ hours on the latest eee, and about 2 hours with the 3 cell battery on the Wind or the One. There is a 9 cell battery available for the Wind that adds about a pound to the overall weight, but extends battery life to about 5 and a half hours, and it comes with a 8.9 inch screen and a 160 Gb hard drive, so I'm leaning that direction.

I want an Eee to toss in a hardbag on the bike for trips, basically for limited web surfing, email checking, and copying pics off my camera cards to a small USB-powered drive. The fact that it's small and has no moving parts is great for why I want one, and it's cheap so if I destroy the thing I won't lose sleep over it.

I have a "real" laptop for things one might need one for. I'd love an Eee as a travel accessory however.

See, I don't need speed ("faster than the D400") or for it to be ultra-light (not very durable) and I can get the D400's for a LOT less. So, to me, for web surfing and using as a picture repository, a small, cheap, durable computer is what I need. You see where I am headed.

Yeah..I agree.. The EEEEEEEPc's and the Cloud are soo lowtech though.

What kinds of hi-tech is needed to surf the web? My phone does that. All you are really talking about with these computers is size. If it matters that much get a new BB Storm with a built in GPS. Has a longer list of abilities, longer battery life, smaller, lighter, more portable, you can create spreadsheets and word docs, take pictures, email, watch porn, listen to music.

What is the problem? Too small? Too convenient? Too much power? What?

I agree Dana. In my case I want a "larger than phone sized" keyboard and screen, USB ports to plug in a card reader and a small external drive, and some basic apps. The Eee is perfect for my needs for where it'd be getting used. Anything more extravagant would involve a real system.

I agree Dana, but a phone is almost too small. i have a iphone that does alot. i switched out a BlackBerry for the iphone. which was a great improvement.

i had a eee box that worked great for what i used it for.
i used it for my job .
it is small and durable, and light. great for wireless assessments.

i still have my powerhorse laptop that does everything else.
i also use a third laptop for network scans that is in the middle class.
the eee is just works great for the price and size and performance.

that is why i said that depends on what you are going to do with for.

Yupper. I think it is all about what you need it for and what you are willing to sacrifice.

Devils advocate aside, I really wish they would make the newer phones more usable as a utility device. Do EVERYTHING well. Include a freaking USB port for thumb drives and external devices. Put a real freaking camera in them. Include GPS. I don't need high res, large displays for a small mobile wireless device. Just make it practical. I mean, for the past 4 years all phones have done what they are still doing. The only thing that has changed ins the interface the cost of the damned plans.

I have been using an EEE for about a year for school. I've beaten on it, fired it up about 6 times a day, etc. It even fell off the scooter once. The "g" key got touchy for a month but that went away and now the power cord isn't charging it. That's a new problem as of 2 days ago. I think it's a connection and we're going to dive into that problem next week.

As for having a $300 laptop that handled all of my school stuff including online classes flawlessly for (almost) a year, I'll buy another one in a heartbeat. I might buy another one even if the old one recovers.

*This is only an effective tool if you have a desktop or other computer that's huge, etc. I found that while most of my classmates had laptops this year, few brought them into class because they were too heavy to carry around. I found that I had to email myself all of my papers and print them out at school after doing a final edit on a big monitor. That's the only hitch and it's not a big one.
