My wife and I are headed to Colorado in a few weeks to go skiing. While there we were looking at doing a half day or full day of snowmobile riding. I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions where to go to rent a snowmobile. We're staying at a condo in Dillon, so anywhere around there would be great.

I looked around online and found a few different places that rented them but didn't know if one place was better to ride than the others.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Never been on a snowmobile before.

snowmobiling is a blast, you just have to get a company that will give you a sled and leave you alone! there are a lot of places as im sure you have seen but every year we go to a place called On The Trail Snowmobile Rentals. it is however, not the closest place to dillion but if you are doin a 2 or 4 hour rental (which is their norm) you would have time to drive over there from dillon and make it back to dillon for dinner. here is their website http://www.onthetrailrentals.com/ and it shows it will take about an hour and 45 min to get there from dillon.

Tiger Run Tours out of Breckenridge does guided tours. Nova Guides out of Pando (near Redcliff) rents self guided sleds. One note about self guided sleds, you will be in the Colorado back country and there is potential for avalanches and getting lost off trail.

yes thats very true. from the first time i have gone til the most recent we found it it more fun to be able to roam by yourself. on the trail has groomed trails, great maps and signs posted at every intersection. its a ride at your own pace but on fun trails up and down a mountain. its always a plus to have your sled equipt with hand and thumb warmers too! some years we need it but others we dont. either way youll have a blast!

I cant give a shop recommendation as the place I rented from went out of business, but I will give another vote for the Grand Lake area. A faster route to Grand Lake would be to take Hwy 9 north from Dillon/Silverthorne to Kremmling then take US40 east to Granby, then US34 north to Grand Lake.

There's some great snowmobiling tours located close to Leadville, not too far from Dillon/Silverthorne area.

+ (whatever we're up to) for Grand Lake.
Not much of an option since you've already got your plans for Dillon,
but next time ski Winter Park and then snowmobile Grand Lake.

Dawn and I did Grand Lake last year... all I can say is wow 26 miles of snowmobile trails.. It was a blast. I do not recall the company we used for rentals but it was on the main street as you enter Grand Lake.

There is a place called "on the trail" I have not used them but they are literally on the trail.

I've done "On the Trail" and by far the best outfit out there. Suki, Alan, Shortcake, myself all went out there and had a blast. Much better than Winter Park thats for sure. Trails are clearly marked but plenty of space to run the sleds around.

One word of advice, get the biggest sled available. The 600's are a little week if your really running around hard. :)

Hey, aren't you in the Nebraska bike club that stole our logo? I think we have to rumble or something before we can hang out. Just sayin'.
