I got home for lunch and started doing some cleaning around the yard while letting the pup out. Ended up cautiously picking up some yard tools, thinking maybe there was a spider or something underneath, and sure enough there was a "dead" black widow there. Well, after like 10 seconds of child-like observation of the thing.... It sprang to life hauling arss up the shovel one inch away from my hand! imagine the consequent scene....

It keeps faking death when disturbed, I didn't know they did that:banghead:

couldn't get her to pose the red markings for me, but here she is... cool looking

Those things are practically the school mascot in ground level and below-ground dorm rooms at CU.

I remember we had this one week where about 5 of them were found in various areas, and we were all encouraged to do "complete" cleanings of our rooms and closets. The by-product of course is that it freaks out the chicks... And well.... You get the idea.

I pulled the guts out of the backflow valve last fall when I winterized the system.

I noticed some webs inside the bell and didn't think anything of it. A couple of weeks ago I was putting some stuff away in the laundry room (where the sprinkler clock is) and noticed two spider corpses in the plastic bag with the valve parts.

Looked like one ate the other... good riddance!

***and the obligatory post***

They mostly come at night... mostly

Lived in a house that had a bunch of black widows.
My roomates and I hunted them down and killed them.

Being young and stupid we decided it would be cool to each keep one as a pet and see who sould raise the biggest one.

They were getting nice and plump on grasshoppers and grubs.
Then one day one of the guys woke up to his jar and dresser covered in microscopic spiders.
Turned out the one he caught was pregnant.

We bombed his room then threw the remaining "pets" together for a gladiatorial death match.
(To the sounds of Alice Cooper's Welcome to my Nightmare album.)
Last one left alive we released into the wild.....was only fair.

Those things are practically the school mascot in ground level and below-ground dorm rooms at CU, but the dope smoke made them mostly harmless.

good lookin spider, so did you kill it or keep it? I used to collect them and keep them when i was young, fed them and made baby deadly spiders. :D

Mom hated that shit, she always found jars full of spiders in my closets.

Is that a fainting goat?

Those things are very cool. I hear that the military is working on a secret project, based on the fainting goat, to give our soldiers and marines the ability to feign death in the presence of the enemy.

J/k. But it's funny!

Otherwise you should hang on to her..put a collar on her, name her spike and make her guard your front door.

Coming from MT I hadn't seen one before last year. I was in the garage cleaning, and talking to a buddy on the cell phone when I moved something and there was a black widow. I knew what it was right away. My conversation went something like "Hey gotta go! I found a black widow I need to catch." My buddy was saying something about squish when I hung up on him. So I found a bottle and got the spider into it and took it into my house. When my wife found out, it nearly ended in divorce.
