a couple weeks ago the screen would dim out while in use. When i would log off, power down and then back up, it would be normal, then dim out again. last week, the screen just suddenly went black, but it was still on. it stayed like that until i manually powered it down ,then the next day it was fine (Except the dimmed screen).

today it just went black again and i've tried powering it back up, but it wont.

Sounds like a bad power supply or motherboard.

My HP has a problem similar to this. It needed a new power supply. Is it under warranty still? The only thing that sucks with laptops is the motherboard and power supply are integrated meaning you have to replace the whole thing.

Does it turn on and the screen just stays blank, or nothing at all happens?

Suki
Fri Feb 6th, 2009, 03:58 PM
yeah, can't find the paperwork for it but i'm pretty sure we didn't get the extended warranty... which.. i think we bought it at circuit city and they're going out of biz anyways, fawk!

Suki
Fri Feb 6th, 2009, 03:59 PM
well right now i'm pressing the power button and nothing happens. it's been charging all day so i know it has a "full battery".

Their warranty is third party so anyone with warranties will not be affected.

Turn it on and let it stop thinking, then hold down the spacebar.
If it starts beeping after a couple seconds then it's probably working and just the screen is out.

Or if you have an external monitor from a desktop plug it in and check.

Take the battery out ---- then put it back in. Then push the ON button. If that doesn't work mix yourself a tripple gin and tonic with a lime and watch some TV.

before i did that i tried the power button again, it started to act like it was going to power on then took a shit.

i'll put it back on the charger for a bit and leave it be then try again later.

Cicuit boards LOVE static electricity, it's like candy to them.

Or just try hitting really hard with a 12lb sledge hammer.

Amazon has the new one for $800+

This site has a new MOBO for $275+

And you can send it to them for $150 for repair

Can't really help you Suki dear but when you get back online check out Carbonite for backups. Automates them in the background and stores them online

BestBuy had a pretty good Compaq on sale (not sure if it still is) for $399. 15.6" LCD, dual core processor, 3Gb RAM and 250Gb HD, and DVD burner

RyNo24
Fri Feb 6th, 2009, 04:15 PM
I would imagine it will be over $300 easy. Power supplies can by $100 alone, plus getting it all installed. If you buy a new one, it will have a warranty and will be up to date. IMO

Take out the AC adapter (power cable)

Take out the battery - leave it out

Hole down the power button, keep holding it and insert the power cord. Keep holding the power button for 30 seconds while it is plugged in.

Now, remove the power, insert battery.

Plug power back in and try it. You should get a series of HDD, power, and Num Lock lights. If still no video you have bad mobo

Buy one of these. You can get them at Micro Center.

http://us.st12.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/topmicrousa_2041_19551616

Take out your HD and plug it into a working computer. Then back up the HD to the working computer.

Sook,

The Satellites are notorious for short life spans. One of their primary problems is poor ventilation. If you've been running it on a desktop, or on your lap, or any surface that could block the vents or cause the surface (and ultimately case) to generate a lot of heat - the internals will shit their pants.

If it is doing NOTHING right now, you might be boned. However, I have a spare Satellite power supply that you could try (but I wouldn't hold my breath on that solving it).

If the mobo/processor is truly fried, there are ways to extract the data from the hard drive. Don't panic, everything is likely recoverable. It's just a matter of determining the source of the problem.

Worst case you need to get a new laptop.

Suki,

Even though it seems Dana has it all under control, I will offer my help with the hope that you will show me your boobs at some point. I think it is the Flux Capacitor. Many of those failed on those Satellite thingymajigs. If you are surfing for pron in your bed, that may be the problem.

Suki
Mon Feb 9th, 2009, 09:47 AM
i was using it in my bed while i was on maternity leave. you see, i had a tiny cling on attached to my boobs at all hours of the day. just when i lost all hopes of ever being part of the outside world again, i realized... hayy, i can puts my laptop on the bed! and so began my daily ritual of putting my tiny dancer on my boob, the laptop on a pillow and surfing doggy/hamster porn. it made me smile.

i'm going to be really stupid right now and ask.. how do i plug a laptop into a regular monitor?

i don't recall seeing a plug in on the laptop for a desktop monitor, but then again i never had a reason to look for one. i'll check tonight when i get home.
