Found this a few minutes ago and it's too surreal not to share...

Here's another link pulled from Digg... http://www.brianscottphoto.com/chernobyl/index.html

It's amazing how resilient nature can be despite the best efforts of human destruction.

There was a neat ride report posted a couple years back about some girl that rode through Chernobyl. Was a pretty good read.

Unfortunately, kid of speed (http://www.kiddofspeed.com/) was revealed to be a hoax. It was very cool though...

Yeah, I remember that now.

Was a great read though, and the pictures are always amazing to look at.

What made it a hoax? Does she not own a motorcycle or something?

On a quick glance it looks like a site of pictures we all know to exist...

IIRC, The story of her riding through the restricted zone, her back story, and a few other things. She wasn't what she said, she was a journalist who took a bus tour w/ her husband and posed w/ a motorcycle helmet... It's been years since this went down. I don't think it diminishes what happened there, or the pics on her site, just her personal story... that's all.

Ahhh...

I wonder why she would want to fake riding a bike.

I like the pic that says something like, don't sit in these chairs too long if you want working balls.

Cause it sounds cooler to blast across a wasteland on a sportbike as opposed to taking a greyhound with 40 other tourists :dunno:

My guess is that she is an avid rider and wanted to draw these two worlds together through this story

Look at what our news stations lie about and fuck up every day, and people say it's REAL and depend on it!!

It'll be a big news day when that sarcophagus fails. Awwww, look at the pretty clouds. I thought that thing would have hit the ground ten years ago. It must have some energizer bunny in it...

I agree that it's a minor detail, but the fact remains. I also think that the media has gotten ridiculously lazy over the years and it's a shame what passes for legitimate reporting these days... I've seen enough "Bart's People" stories to last a life time.

The scary thing is that the sarcophagus was originally built to last 20 years... Well, we're past that and they haven't done anything but patch some of the holes in the walls and monitor radiation levels.

One of the last proposals I worked on at my last job was for the New Safe Confinement structure designed to enclose and dismantle the sarcophagus. It was really cool to see what and how they were proposing to clean up this disaster area.

Has anyone seen any research done on the flora and fauna of the area? Curious, given the amount of constant radiation, as to the level (if any) of genetic mutation in the species there.

That sounds like a cool project.

When it first blew up, the plan/technique was for people to hold their breath, run in and toss some of the rubble into the pit and run out. ALL those people died shortly after. IIRC not even the robots lasted fifteen minutes. That's why the peeps were brought in. Great plan!
