Tragic.

Too early in the season for folks to be riding like mid-summer. Even though the weather has been completely awesome for riding it's still March. There is still a lot of sand. In one of the passes today I felt my back tire step sideways about six inches as I crossed the center line. Rusty skills, sand and too many folks itching to turn and burn ... bad combination.

Sun Mar 22nd, 2009, 08:07 PM
Yeah...what Jeff said about rusty skills, lotsa sand and just not the right time of year.

My heartfelt condolences to family and friends.

My oldest daughter and I decided to go for a drive this evening around Horsetooth Res...we were in the cage. We saw a boatload of riders...all skill levels, and a variety of bikes. Lots of them without helmets and the protective gear was minimal at best. I watched a couple of girls riding ahead of a guy. They definitely were newbs...I thought, kudos for riding on a road that is close to home, but has just enough twists and turns, then I noticed they were wearing hoodies, not armored jackets. :(

It's just the beginning of Spring...people have been cooped up and they've been teased by this amazing weather. If what I had to say would make a difference in anyone's mind before they throw a leg over, I would say this...WEAR YOUR GEAR!!! Please...

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) — The State Patrol says two people are dead after being thrown from the motorcycle they were riding.

"The patrol says they believe drugs or alcohol were a factor in the accident along a frontage road northeast of Interstate 25 near Fort Collins. Troopers say the victims were a 25-year-old man from Fort Collins and a 24-year-old woman from Thornton. Their names were not released.

Neither rider was wearing a helmet in the Sunday morning crash. The State Patrol says the motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it skidded near a curve.

Both riders were pronounced dead at the scene."

Article was updated, I know news like this is tragic, regardless of the situation, no one ever wants to think of losing a loved one. But when you gamble with taking anything that will inhibit your riding and dont even take precautions to wear the proper gear, then you are just asking for an outcome like this.

RIP to the riders and my best to the friends and family, but please dont be an idiot when riding, especially with a passenger.

just my 2 pesos.

Maybe we're all just going a bit crazy with this warm weather. I counted more than a handful of sport riders I saw in town with no jacket or helmet. Gear may or may not have made a difference this this case, but for god's sake, wear your gear!

Sun Mar 22nd, 2009, 09:18 PM
I definitely agree on the gear. Even a textile jacket is better than a hoodie. I hit a patch of sand up on P2P on Saturday and felt the rear tire moving and that brought my speed on that run down a good 20mph. I don't want to hear about this happening to anyone on the board.

1) Drinking and Riding
2) Excessive Speed
3) No gear

Those people made 3 piss-poor decisions and it cost them their lives.

I was very sad to hear about this last night - I feel awful for their families,
someone is starting this week off without their son and daughter -
that would have to be the worst pain i could imagine.

One of the pics showed a helmet on the side of the road -
does that mean he was riding with a locked helmet on his bike?

That would break my heart if I was that girls dad, and knew that
her possible safety was strapped to the side of the kids Kawi.

You think this poor kid took a MSF? - i can almost guarantee no.
MSF and HELMETS SHOULD BE MANDATORY. PERIOD. PERIOD.

RIP

While track skilz are a good tool to use in piloting a bike ----- they really are quite different then the skilz required to survive on the street. It appears that this accident was greatly attributed to pilot error and bad judgment.

No gear and impaired judgement is just asking for trouble. Like some of you have already stated, I have too seen people riding around Boulder and surrounding areas in flip-flops, listening to their iPods with no helmet, etc. My condolences to their families. Hate to see people make horrible decisions like that.

RIP Riders :(

It's get'n to be that time again kids. I saw a kids blaze'n up Santa Fe on Saturday wearing a wifebeater & sunglasses. Thought it was exceedingly stupid...then he got trumped by the guy at the other end of the road who was taking a corner onto Santa Fe with an HJC frame slider, a pit shirt & no kind of protection on, not even eye protection.

Stupid hurts & is occasionally fatal. When there's so much crap that we can't control when we're on our bikes, please, for the love of God, take advantage of the few things that actually are in our grasp.

God be with the families.

From the Ft. Collins Coloradoan:

The Colorado State Patrol says the two people killed in yesterday's motorcycle crash were Joseph Reed, 25, of Fort Collins, and Shallie Reed, 24, of Thornton.
The CSP said neither of the two, whose relationship was not immediately known, were wearing helmets.
CSP said Joseph Reed was driving a silver 2005 Kawasaki Ninja when he lost control about 11:40 a.m. while driving south on the Interstate 25 east Frontage Road from Larimer County Road 48.
Drugs or alcohol combined with high speed likely contributed to the fatal crash that killed two motorcyclists Sunday morning east of Fort Collins, according to Trooper Ryan Sullivan, a CSP spokesman.
The motorcycle approached a right-hand curve at a high rate of speed and began to skid. The motorcycle laid down on its right side, throwing the two. Shallie Reed tumbled and collided with a steel post, according to CSP.
The victims came to a rest in front of Heli Support, 120 NE Frontage Road. The bike kept going another 300 feet and stopped in a field.
Both were pronounced dead at the scene. A helmet was found several feet from the crash, but neither the driver nor the rider were wearing helmets.
According to CSP, alcohol was found in Shallie Reed's car, which was not parked at the scene.

Reports say bike went down on the right side, on a right hand "bend" while traveling south on the frontage road. Using my sooper-dooper internet forensix skillz, I'd presume he hit the cross-patch of dirt caused by the interesecting dirt road, seen here:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=40.588476,-105.000774&daddr=&geocode=&hl=en&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=0&sz=18&sll=40.587718,-105.000313&sspn=0.002196,0.004313&ie=UTF8&ll=40.587832,-105.000361&spn=0.002196,0.004313&t=h&z=18

This caused the bike to slide. He probably got back onto solid pavement with the bike not true, back end slid out and, and he went down with the bike ending up here:

I feel for the families and the lives needlessly and avoidably cut short. It has been a few years since I was an ER tech and ran any calls in an ambulance but I have seen some gnarly wrecks in my day.

Not many helmets; that was one of the first things I noticed after I moved here a couple of weeks ago. I moved here from a state with a helmet law, it is strange to see people riding without them. I saw some sport bikes on Saturday morning at 120th and Sheridan and they were geared up proper. It was a pleasant surprise.

I have been in a couple of motorcycle accidents and tore up two entire sets of gear, including helmets. The helmet saved my life the first time for sure and the second time I would have likely irreparable damage to my face and brain pan were it not for my full face helmet. My brother is a paramedic instructor at a college in Nevada and he uses what is left of my gear from my last crash to illustrate how much damage protective gear can absorb.

Ride safe, watch for careless cagers and for the love god at least wear a helmet.

I use to drink alot and for 5 years went without a bike because of drinking, when I quit drinking the only thing that has kept me sober this long (besides my wife and kids) is having another bike. I have never ridden my bike even after 1 beer. i just have to much respect for motorcycles to take the chance even in my hay day of drinking..... Now drive a car I would do that skull f*cked drunk. I just got lucky with that
