View Full Version : Internet Explorer 8 busted me!

So for the past... oh... I don't know how many years, I have been using a Windows XP pro CD that I have, for installs on my PCs. It was a legit copy, with a legit volume license key. It wasn't from a business that I had any particular ties with, but its origins were clean.

It worked w/out a hitch for a long time, but for maybe the past 3 (re)installs, I started getting an error upon activation that said it was an out-of-date volume license key.

My easiest fix was always to just call Microsoft, talk to one of the tech support guys, and have them give me an activation code for it, over the phone. Golden.

Well I installed IE8 on my machine, and after the install the WGA software that comes with it, again "caught" something with my Windows. It disabled a shit-ton of features and blah-blah-blah, notified me that I was not "geniune".

Fast forward 15 minutes and the call to Microsoft was less than fruitful. I was repremanded about how my license key was reported stolen, blocked, and or otherwise unusable. No matter how I tried to sweet-talk, I was getting no love, and there would be no "over the phone" activation for me this time. Long-story-short, I ended up buying a new Windows XP instance for some $160 bucks. I got re-licensed over the net, and the CD is in transit now.

I guess the moral of this whole post is to let any of you IE7 users who are on a less-than-honorable (but working) version of XP, that you might want to hold off on your DL and install of IE8. It might end up biting you in the ass.

If I liked the way Firefox worked, then maybe.

To each their own I suppose. I went to the Fox before IE implemented tabs and never went back.

Edit: Good info though... save someone else from that outrageous re-lic charge!!

I'm a Firefox fan myself...but my brother keeps raving about Google Chrome. I know it is rather basic and still in the beta (I think?) phase. Just don't see the "ooh-ahh" factor of it tho.
Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Man, Barn, I have dozens of legal copies of XP with the corresponding CD's. You should have PM'd me.

Barn

Sometimes the sheppards must lead the sheep to the stashes of "legit-challenged" software. :D

But I'm tryin', Ringo, I'm tryin' real hard to be the shepherd.

I thought about it, and I did figure that people could help me get around it, but I didn't want to have to do a reinstall, and I didn't see any option to "re-activate" with a different key.

And plus, I needed my PC back that instant. I feel marginally proud of myself that I'm riding clean now.

That and the warm fuzzy you got by making an indirect contribution to the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation!

^^^I'm thinking about doing the same with my next computer. By that time I might live in the same state, maybe even the same city as my long distance girlfriend! That should drastically reduce the amount of porn induced viruses as well, since I don't look at it much when she's around ;)

Just goto an apple store and touch a laptop keyboard, feel the keys then lift it up........sale is done!

It is just made better, the OS is much more efficient and can run windows faster than a PC......what else is there?

Wouldn't go so far as to call it a struggle. I was the one who was trying to operate on the low in the first place, so if anything I guess I'm just finally coming due.

But yeah... I never intended for this to be (yet another) MAC vs. PC threads. I'm glad you're happy with your device. I too love my iPod. This was more of a PSA, since I didn't want any of my friends having to shell out any money for anything, or have to deal with a reinstall, etc; if they were thinking about using IE8.

I hear ya bro....I just thought it was funny over April fools day I went over to a few friends houses and they were all afraid to touch or turn on their computer in lieu of all the viruses and shit......Most of that I think was the media and the virus protection commericals, but it is a real issue when dealing with PC's.

Good luck to you, didn't mean to hijack.

Humm weird XP is the easiest OS to make legit..... Now vista is a pain....but of course I skipped that and went to Windows 7 since they are giving away keys free!

Oh yeah when you download that new version it also gives you a sh*t ton of addon cr*p. It all is pretty cool and helpfull stuff but also exposes alot of your personal information to be stolen if you dont keep your temp files cleaned up. By default it saves your form data, site cookies, page history and all kinds of info. Just beware

How are you liking Windows 7?

We have had 7 here for a couple of months and let me say this:

We originally called it the Window ME version of Vista.

We have now grown to really like it. There are some networking issues we are working out and a few HDD encryption problems (dealing with 3rd party government encryption apps) that we cannot find fixes for. Other than that, it is the most initially solid OS I have seen in a long time.

Hell, the last Ubuntu 9.04 Beta i DL'd is STILL running like crap on known good HW.

Windows 7 FTW in my book.

Hey Barn - what are you doing paying MS $160 when you still owe me like 2000? Huh? What is that all about?

Notice: No reality was used in the making of this post.

Runs smooooth....it seems to have the look of vista without the bloat....I have it running on my netbook and BootCamped on my Mac....and all legit!
