I just ordered this in my full 520 conversion with an RK XW-Ring gold chain for 150 shipped. What do you suspect my acceleration will be like? Right now cause of the altitude the front end comes up about 6 inches full throttle at the end of the powerband. It's supposed to be around 20-25% increase in power so the bike should react like a 954 at sea level?

I went down one and up 4 on my 954 and the front end is hard to keep on the ground if I gave it full throttle I would be on my back

With that ratio it'll have the pull of a badly out of tune Vespa!

with that gearing you should be able to power wheelie 4th, and clutch it up in 6th :eyebrows:

Yeah, I'm kinda hesitant to accept the idea of it being that wheelie prone. I've got -1 +12 gearing on my 91 F2 stuntbike and it doesn't even really like to clutch 2nd gear. Of course that's an 80hp no torque hog.

I am still on a 530 I am changing to a 520 this season and am going to add one tooth to the rear so it will be -1 +5 but I only use first gear on starts I wouldnt recommend that setup for street riding it kind of makes first gear unusable but it pulls like a mofo in 2nd & 3rd

I'm getting it installed hopefully tomorrow by TFOG after I get it from UPS. I'll take some helmet cam videos.

First gear is pretty much unusable on a liter bike at sea level. I really just want more pull in 2nd 3rd and 4th I don't really care about first gear.

I daily ride a 91 F2 with -1 +12 gearing, yes on the highway too. I've even rode it over 100 miles on I-25.

It won't be that bad on the 954. I'll still be able to hit 135 or 140 so 60mph to spare on the highway is enough for me.

ummmmm :o

Shoot a buddy of mine had a Gix 750 with the same set up and it would wheelie (with out trying) on the throttle at like 6 mph........... I almost had to start in 2nd just to avoid getting bucked off.......... To much for me personally. Its not useable power. I think he dropped down 2 in the rear and now its wicked fast and accelerates like a mo....

Rear sprockets are cheap enough if I don't like it I'll just order a 2 up and sell my 5 on ebay.

Keep in mind if you drop back down to +2, your chain will probably be too long. Not that big of a deal, but it is a PITA. :|

Just to clarify, changing your gearing doesn't change your actual power (or powerband), it just changes how quickly you get into it. With shorter gearing, you're going to get into the powerband quicker (at lower speeds in each gear - hence the reasoning that you'll be revving at a higher RPM when cruising on the highway), so it will feel like you have more power, but in all reality, you don't. Except for the power gained by the weight loss due to the 520 conversion - if you went to the 520 with stock gearing, you would already notice more power, since you're dealing with rotational mass, the lighter sprockets & chain will spin up quicker simply due to the weight savings.

Bottom line, unless you ride around mostly in the bottom 2/3 of the rev range, I think you're going to have a wheelie monster on your hands.

Keep in mind that your speedometer will now be off as well. To see how much (and how different gearing will affect your top speed), you can play around with some numbers here: http://www.cosportbikeclub.org/misc/SpeedCalc.html

No it doesn't change your actual power, BUT, if you're on a bicycle going up a hill and you use low gears, yeah you can only go 5mph but you can turn the pedals and top out much quicker.

So even though there's no "actual" power gain from gearing, the increased final drive makes it easier for your bike to accelerate.

Also if anyone knows where I can get a speedo healer cheap, I just missed out on the version 1 closeout at calsportbike for 40 dollars and I really don't wanna pay over half what my whole conversion cost just to adjust the speedo.

Well I got it installed, it's not bad on the highway, around 5.5-6000 most the time. It pulls really hard in first gear, even sitting as close to the tank as I can it wants to wheelie off half throttle, 6th gear is awesome, I had it at highway speeds and topped the bike out in about 3 seconds.

Even though I like it, the gearing isn't for most people. If you don't wheelie you wont know how high the bike is (feels a lot higher at first) but in reality you can have it up high and still accelerate pretty hard.

Also, it's still easy to keep the wheel down and accelerate as hard as I could before, and it makes 2nd and 3rd a lot nicer.

After reading this thead, I'm interested in how much adding 2 teeth to the rear would affect my acceleration? I downloaded this nifty gear ratio calculator at http://www.dropbears.com/u/utilities/gearing.htm and it tells me my top speed would drop from 162mph to 155mph, so no worries there especially since it can't quite pull redline in top gear anyway. Would 2 teeth even be worth the trouble? 3 teeth?

You would feel it. Adding 3 would be even more noticable. It's the equivilent (give-or-take), to dropping 1 tooth on the counter-sprocket.
