Im doing the print advertising for Epic Motosports in Longmont, and i'm fresh out of school (art degree) but never took any print classes. We had a problem with the last magazine ad, because it was at 96 dpi and came out pixelated.

I cant for the life of me find any where to convert this new one to dpi...

I'm reading that dpi is a print setting only. So do i need to do this new ad in 300 PPI? (Cause the magazine said it needed to be 300 dpi)...

Any help would be great. thanks!

No disrespect, your ads look good, but why are you using photoshop to do print work? Shouldn't this be done in inDesign?

Art degree? Not a design degree, I take it? Basic Photoshop - dpi is dots per inch - you set this up in your resolution when you start a new file (in PS it's the same box you set up the other size/color requirements). If you are printing, you should NEVER go under 300dpi and ideally set up for 600dpi or higher depending on your output. Better yet - talk with your print shop and get the exact recommendations for file set up based on the equipment they are using (I'm assuming you aren't doing color separations).

You need to make sure that you are using high res pics for your layered art work as well. Any low res/tiny crap shots are going to look sub par no matter how much you tweak them. And imperfections that aren't noticeable on screen can be a real mess in print.

If you are planning more print work in your future - I recommend taking some courses or investing some time in online research and books on printing, it's a vast topic. Knowledge is good. And an excellent print shop is even better.

96dpi to start?

Don't bother trying to convert to a higher dpi, because you'll never get the precision you are looking for. Well you can...but the amount of effort will be so much that it'll be more efficient to just scrap the project and start over. Restart the project at a minimum of 600dpi. A lot of lower quality printing 300 dpi is sufficient (low quality paper for flyers etc). But why limit yourself to the lower end?

I've gotta ask though... seriously? 96dpi?

DPI isn't just a print setting... well kinda... depending on the file format you're saving to it can vary greatly. If the original artwork is done in PSD format or even SVG, then lower resolutions can be enhanced to a certain point. But 96 is well.... substandard even for images enhanced for web display.

Also, use a font that people can read easier without squinting. Please. That tire/wheel ad hurts my eyes... and my soul a little bit too.

Yea studio art with an emphasis on digital media. never even opened illustrator in classes.

Ok so i understand the differnce between dpi and ppi. my problem is in CS4. In the new project settings window THERE IS NO OPTION FOR DPI RESOLUTION. only ppi and ppc (pixels per centimeter)

is there a way to export it in dpi? or convert ppi to dpi. thats my problem.

its been down sized by about half for the web view. thats why the font is small.
