View Full Version : Beer taste test

Besides motorcycles, drama and sarcasm, the other thing we all have in common is the ability to enjoy a good beer (or nine). So I was going to set up a little taste test to educate my lady friend a little on the virtues of diferent beers and wanted your opinion. If you had to set up a taste test for the 5 beers below, what would you choose? If you only have opinions on one or two that's fine. Just curious.

1. Ale
2. Lager
3. Porter
4. Stout
5. Pilsner

If you're going to say anything about: Miller, Budwiser, Coors or any other mass produced water, feel free to keep those opinions to yourself.

haha I actually like a good Pilsner. Not sure why. Just tastes good

Stout is a bit too harsh for a "drinkin' beer" but I can sip one to completion

Porters are too fancy

Lagers are nice for me when it is super hot out.

CB & Potts makes a nice Vanilla Porter. This would probably be a good one to include, since you're dealing with a female and this beer has a nice sweet overtone to it.

If you are looking for a variation on the stout... try a milk stout. I enjoy the one from Left Hand Brewery (which is local too!)

The only lager that I really crave is one that I found in Germany and never have seen stateside, so I can't help you there.

Night Stalker (not sure of brewery, hard to find) - Stout
Agave (Breckenridge Brewery) Wheat Ale
Alaskan Smoked Porter (Davidson Liquors carries, or used too)
Coffee Stout
Chocolate Stout
Samuel Smith's Oatmael stout

I'm not a hop fan either, but there's just enough in Kronenbourg 1664 to make it chock full of tasty goodness, even if it does come from France. It's mah favorite beeeerz!

1. Ale
2. Lager
3. Porter
4. Stout
5. Pilsner

Just to be clear. We can always start a "what's your fav random beer" thread, but I was wondering if anybody had any tips on what would be good examples for these catagories.

I've gotten a couple of tips for porter's, but I don't think "smoked" or "vanilla" really depicts what a porter is. Same with "milk stout"

Slacker- some good choices
Chris- Kronenbourg 1664 is good, lager, I think?
Zach- nice, I've never had it
Salsa- I like the way you think! solid choices. Although would Guinness be the best example for a stout in this situation?

Sean, you definitely need to pick it up. Its pretty common... brewed with Kona coffee beans. You'll like it and most people I have offered one to enjoy it as well, even if they don't have the "beer tongue"

Have I ever mentioned that I hate you?

blahblahblahblah Chris blah blah blah
Either lager or a pilsner I think...my definitions of the two are a little lacking. Either way, tell her to drink it, love it, and fix you a sandwitch while she's drinking & loving it. \happliy ever after

Stout - BJ's Brewery Tatonka Stout
Pilsner - What's a pilsner? I can't think of any at all come to think of it...

yeah... if you enjoy sucking on a cow's ass... Fat Tire used to rock, but NB has drug it down to Bud & Coors levels.

IMO, Guinness is the standard to judge other stouts by. If you want to introduce someone to that style of beer, go with a quality standard. If they like it, branch out into some of the others like milk stout or some of the mico stouts.

I think that's where you're wrong Sean. Craft Brews are truly the best way to "sample" any kind of beer. Mass produced beers like Bass Ale, Guinness, etc used to be great beers but since the demand is so high the quality has gone out the window. (ala Fat Tire)

I think a nice smoked porter or even a milk stout is a great way to grasp what that kind of beer is all about.

Maybe get 3 different porters, 3 ales, 3 stouts. See if either of you can really pick up on what makes that kind of beer.

For the love of DOG though, please please please DO NOT use any mass produced crap to introduce her taste buds.

I'd be happy to hit the liquor store with you to help you pick some brews out.

Also, check out http://beertaptv.com They have some great video reviews of craft brews that might point you towards some you might not have thought about initially.

BTW, have I mentioned that I LOVE Craft Brews?

Just take her to The Falling Rock Tap House down on Blake, and have at it. There is no finer sampling of beers anywhere in the state.

I know Hefe's aren't on your list, but get her (at least a taster) of Hoegaarden.

Mass produced beers like Bass Ale, Guinness, etc used to be great beers but since the demand is so high the quality has gone out the window. (ala Fat Tire)1. I'm never wrong (ever) and 2. I agre with craft/micro brews, much better than mass produced. My only point was to offer a little more variety in brands. That's all.

Maybe get 3 different porters, 3 ales, 3 stouts. See if either of you can really pick up on what makes that kind of beer. This is where I'm leaning. There's just to many variations and to many groups. It's also the fasted way to get really drunk! We should get a couple of us and do a tasting one night?

I'd be happy to hit the liquor store with you to help you pick some brews out.Thanks. Although that would probably end in you and I drinking great beer all night and not sharing. I feel okay with my knowledge of barley and hops, I just wanted some more input.

I LOVE BEERGreat minds think alike, my friend!

I know Hefe's aren't on your list, but get her (at least a taster) of Hoegaarden.Didn't they get bought out by some big brewer? Last time I had one it tasted like shit. Well, not shit, but certainly not a weis beer. The reason I didn't include those is b/c I know she likes them. I just tried Easy Street Wheat, not bad at all.

~Barn~
Fri Apr 24th, 2009, 04:57 PM
Yeah, Easy Street is a gooder. I'm fond of Odell stuff in general. And I hadn't heard about any buy-out for Hoegaarden. It's possible.
