Ok so over the weekend I went and test rode a Speed Triple at Foothills. I fell in love immediately. But I did some good thinking over the weekend and realized I really dont need 130hp as Im still on my first bike right now (sv650). But Im a big guy and I think the standard street triple will have me wanting to upgrade in 2 years again. So I think the Street Triple R is what I really want. The issue I am having is really that I dont want to buy brand new again, you just lose so much money when you drive it off the lot. But there are NO used R's out there. Lots of used speedy's and Daytonas. While I like the Daytona I dont think I would like having a supersport for everyday riding. I want to do lots of mountain rides this summer and I think thats the wrong bike. But there are lots of them used in great shape. Do you think I would get used to that position? Im pretty big at 6' 205lbs.

So help me decide what I should do!

1. Used Speed Triple $7k-8500k
2. Used Daytona $7k ish
3. New Street Triple R $9500

Sorry I have no real interest in any jap bikes right now. I really want a Triumph. And yes I know these threads are lame :).

Obviously just my .02 ...I would go with the Daytona. I have been impressed with the Daytona for some time now and would also love to have one of my own.

Good luck with your search and upgrade!

Dont post that pic! TOO SEXY MUST NOT LOOK!

Not yet, had a guy look at it last night and he seemed interested. He said his buddies are telling him the SV is too whimpy and he needs a liter bike haha.

The street triple R doesn't have any more power than the regular street triple, just better suspention and brakes.

I know which is why I would choose it (i.e. Im fat). I dont really need the power of the Speedy but the streety felt soft under me like my SV does. The daytona, street and street R are all 107hp. Which im thinking is perfect.

Having been lusting over a Speed Triple for the past few years and owning a Sprint RS 955 (same motor as S3)...get the Speed Triple! :D Besides there's one on CL for under $6K (http://fortcollins.craigslist.org/mcy/1186062485.html) or one for $8K (http://denver.craigslist.org/mcy/1177061070.html).

I haven't gotten to ride a 675 yet and have heard the power to weight is similar...but...man, the torque hit on the 955/1050 is awesome and they are some of the best street engines EVER. Real world power not all concentrated at ten billion rpm.
And they have Character. Something lacking in most of the Big 4 brands.

OK... I gotta pipe in here... in my completely biased opinion, go with the Speed Triple.

We're about the same size and when I test rode the 675, I hated it. Awesome track bike, and canyon destroyer. But IMO, for every day riding and logging serious miles, the Daytona would not be on my list... ever.

BTW, 1200 miles last weekend on my S3 and loved every minute of it.

Think the Speedy is pretty comfy for longer trips? I think I may still go that route since I can get them used.

I've done one IBA and numerous weekend trips on my S3. The only creature comfort I added was a cramp buster... ask King Nothing how well they work!

Read up on www.sport-touring.net (http://www.sport-touring.net) and www.triumphrat.net (http://www.triumphrat.net), people whine about the seat being cramped, but I think the S3 seat is more comfortable than the Sprint ST's. The ergo's on the upright bars make for a comfortable seating position for longer rides but the lack of wind protection will get to you after 8 or 9 hours in the saddle... but you're no stranger to naked bikes so this shouldn't come as a surprise.

I do think that I see a serious sport tourer in my future, but it will be in addition to the S3... sorry Eric, I'm not letting her go.

One more thing... get used to talking to random strangers about your Speedie :D

the bugged out headlights are the best. For trips, it would be tough trying to find saddlebags for the thing because of the pipes and tiny rear. Hope you can buy it man,

salsashark
Tue May 26th, 2009, 11:50 AM
^^ nahh... the stock pipes have heat shields on them and most sport panniers have adjustable straps that will easily get you over the stockers.

I've got a Nelson Rigg setup that works great. This pick doesn't have the 3rd bag that attaches to the top, but gives you an idea.

What's funny is I guess I'm at the same spot with the RS. I have an itchin' to get a new/different bike and would love a S3 but I don't want to get rid of my Sprint to do it so I'll keep racking up the miles on it. :D

Man, if I won Powerball a Triumph dealer would be loving it because outside of getting a dirtbike (or three or four) I could be very happy filling my garage from Triumph's lineup. Let's see...uh, a Speed Triple, a Thruxton, a Tiger, a 675 Daytona, a Street Triple for Wifey (yeah right, I know :p), a Scrambler...Pretty much one of each minus the Rocket and it's offspring.

go with the speedy! when I test rode one, the only thing I would have like better would be clip-ons instead of the bars, because I felt like I was sitting too upright. My ST is more comfortable IMO, but a corbin seat goes a long way, as does some wind protection.

Don't be intimidated by the power, the triples are very forgiving, predictable and above all, smooth. They sound awesome as well.

Triumph FTW

FoCo Motorsports had a white 05 or 06 a while back with 20k miles...wanted like $6800 OTD, a bit steep IMO...

I think someone mentioned triumphrat.net, a few months ago there were a few in the $6k range with 5-10k miles

good luck, and an early welcome to the triple club...

^^ yep, that's the one...

Here's the ad for C Springs

2005 Triumph Speed Triple 1050CC. This is an absolutely beautiful bike. The color is Scorched Yellow. The bike has 11,330 original miles on it. This bike has never been laid down or crashed and has always been adult driven. Always garaged kept. I have all the original paper work for the bike, to include routine maintenance. Last year I put new Michelin Pilot tires, front and rear, on the bike. The tires have approximately 1,000 miles on them and are still in very good shape. This bike has an optional seat cal as well as a fly screen, approximate $450.00 value. It runs wonderful and is in excellent condition. There are two minor scratches visible. One scratch is on top of the seat and there is a minor scratch on the gas cap cover. Other than these two minor imperfections, it looks brand new. I have never had a problem with it. I am sorry to get rid of it, but I am moving. Willing to negotiate some. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to email, or contact me at (719) 251-8027. Cash sale, only.

SALSA SHARK, how do you like your continentals?

After destroying several sets of tires and not seeing the same mileage as the people I was riding with, I went in search of a better performing tire that could last longer than 3000 miles. That's what lead me to continentals.

I really like the conti's. Great mileage, good water clearing, good grip. I have the road attacks on my S3. I had them on my Sprint ST as well and really liked them. When I did my research for tire replacement on the Sprint, the conti's got great reviews, they just don't have the racing sponsorships and marketing money behind them in the states but they're a ST tire of choice across the pond.

They also make line of sport tires and race tires, but I don't have a need for them so I can't speak to them. I found the Road Attacks and I like them.

Conti RA's FTW!

best balance of stick and longevity IMO. went form RA's to PP 2CT's, and its looking as if the 2CT's are going to get roughly half the mileage that I saw with the conti's, and the increase in grip isn't really noticable. The only thing I will mention is a tendency to overheat the edge of the rear in the heat with hard cornering

Maybe I just need to ride the daytona to see if I can stand the riding position. They are dead sexy and are consistantly the top rated in its class.

I have a '98 Daytona T595 (same as a 955i) and love(ed) it.
(Not currently running, but through no fault of Triumph's design.)

I'm 6'2" 200lbs and it fit pretty well, but it is a true sport riding position.
I switched left-to-right clip-ons and it raised the riding postion an inch or two.
And you can always get risers for the bars, but that also entails new brake/clutch lines.

Sweet bike, very managable power.
Plus you don't see a million of them every time you're out riding so added points for style.

I heard they received great reviews, even when Sport Rider did their tire test they were rated fairly high for the durability department. I would not mind trying their Sport Attack or Attack race but the prices are a little high where I am looking. Who is your outfitter? Hard to believe their single compound could outlast the duals but am willing to give them a try.
