Taking a trip Late July around the 28th to head up to Minn and over to Mi. Will be stopping at Mt. Rushmore for about 2-3 days. Camping. It would be great if there were more to party with and enjoy the sites with. No chase vehicle's are coming. (which there should not be).

Well I am sure there will be lots of bikers there as you are getting in on the first weekend of Sturgus...I took a trip up that way last yeare before I came over to Kuwait and there were tons of bikes in that area. The rally does not officially start that weekend but they start showing up none the less.

We spent a week in Custer SD 2 years ago.

Crazy Horse, Jewel Cave, and Wind Cave are definitely worth seeing. Take a ride through the Custer National Forest (http://www.fs.fed.us/r1/custer), it costs a few bucks. If you have the time and have never been, Devil's Tower is worth seeing.

If you need a place to eat in Rapid City:

I love it up there. This will be my second trip this year into that area. Custer kicks ass. I love the Needles highway. Sure you guys don't want to come? Look forward to checking out the brewery. Saw there firetruck on the side of the highway advertising it near Wall but did not have the time to stop.

I may be up for this! The wife and I were planning a trip up that way for our anniversary. We have a hookup on a cabin in Sturgis for the week. We would be riding 2 up.

From there...been there a Zillion times. Just watch out for wildlife at night....especially between Deadwood(Dollar Blackjack tables) and theres a bar there thats a must stop with Sawdust still on the floor and Keystone. I always stay in Keystone. Mt. Rushmore at night is the best time to see it and you can fly over it by helicopter. Stay away from going into Crazy Horse...just check out the view from beyond. It hasn't changed that much over the years and for what you get for going in there not worth it. I too love the needles highway....Would love to go but have another trip planned at the same time....

I am from there also. The good roads USED to be neckyoke (off hwy 16 before rockerville, sheridan lake road, hwy 44, and some road that connects hwy 16 to hwy 79 (goes past hart ranch). It has been 10+ years, so things have probably changed.

I have been meaning to take a weekend trip up there sometime and do some riding, but definitely not around August (rally time traffic sucks).

I'll be up in Yellowstone on that weekend. Seriously thought about heading to that area, but I'm sure we won't make it.

Most of the dirt roads up there (visible on the tourist map that's free at nearly any place you stop) are totally doable on a streetbike if it's dry (Did them in my civic). It's mostly national forest so dispersed camping is free if you're into that. Do your riding EARLY in the morning on needles and Iron mountain, but in the park, after you cross a cattle guard, stay mellow on the low-vis twisties because the bison like to use the roads.

2nd blowing off crazy horse- their museum is not worth it unless you're really into native stuff with scattered/non-existent back story and organization.

If you're bringing a fishing rod, PM me.

Custer state park is free if you're just riding through and you NEVER GET OFF THE BIKE. (Those are the rules) It's better to buy a day pass and hike around- if you get 1/2 mile off the road the crowds thin way out.

The caves are sweet and a nice place to cool off mid-afternoon.

Looks like we are making similar trips. I am going to mantowa mn (sw of duluth) via rapid city then around lake superior (thunder bay to sault ste marie) and back through wisconsin. Not sure I can wait till the 28th, but if I can, I will ride with you.

Good reports guys, although, plans have changed. I am going to bypass Mt. Rushmore and head straight to Milwaukee (harley museum) looks pretty cool. Two days there, and Two days buzzing around the UP of michigan before heading down to the lower part. Then off to Minnesota. Have a good ride everyone.
