This isn't a great pic of her....but she is a quarter or so border collie. She spent the first seven months of her life in an abusive situation. It was obvious. We rescued her from death row from the humane society. The best dog ever!

Full day surgery next Wed. It's worth a try.

If you have the means, do whatever you can to save a family member. Money is easy to make, lifelong friends are not. Sorry about your doggie Pandora :( I hope everything turns out exactly is you want it to.

So sorry to hear about fuzzy having cancer. Depending on the outcome of surgery CSU was spotlighted at one point for being one of the few places to offer a very successful canine cancer treatment that is in a pill (I think).
They have had very good luck with it but I am not certain of the cost, although given that they are still trying to further develop the treatment some of the costs might be covered by grants.
Good luck to your fur baby!

I feel the pain...We had to put down our Weimarner a few months ago and he was just under five years old (massive kidney failure <<i think he was posioned>>). We took some time off from having a dog, but we will be picking up our newest addition next week. He's a Vizsla coming from Nebraska.

Our dog just had surgury for a tumor (http://www.kateconnick.com/library/mastcelltumor.html) last November and the Vet was unable to get the margins in depth that they wanted. Found out it was cancerous and went to VRCC (http://www.vrcc.com/oncology/) (Englewood). They recommended CSU (http://www.csuanimalcancercenter.org/radiation-therapy) due to location of tumor (on neck by throat and ear). They have some very specialized equipment. After a month of driving 85 Miles (one way) to CSU plus a lot of money the dog is doing great with a few side effects( missing hair and reverse sneezes). Best of luck to your dog.

Lost 2 of mine in the last 6 months, my sympathies. One of them got cancer when he was 6, on his face, but they cut it out and he was fine.

I would offer this dissenting opinion. My prayes for the surgery, but if it comes to chemo, reconsider. Its a very painful and draining proceedure, but a human can reason through it. A dog will have no idea of why they are being tortured, even though it is for the best, and you simply can't communicate enough to explain it to them.

Over Christmas, my oldest was fading fast, the only option was to keep him at the vet, all day, on an IV drip. He couldn't stand, and was in a kennel by himself. He would have to sit in his own waste until the busy staff got to him. I would go see him evey morning and afternoon, but it just wasn't right. We brought him home. He was happier, but unable to deal his inabilty to move. I would make him as comfortable as possible, but he would howl with frustration when he couldn't stand up. The sounds he made broke my heart and I had to come to the realization I was keeping him around for me, not for him.

16 years old. I had that little dog from the first year I joined the military. Throught 2 countries, 5 states, 12 moves, and 1 failed marrige, he was there. He screened my wife, when he met her he settled in her lap and that told me she was a keeper.

So I get loyalty, and believe me, after you, no one wants your dog to recover more than me. But even after my vet warned me, I kept him around too long. I wish he hadn't suffered as much. I wish I had been more loyal to what he needed than to what I needed, becuase all he ever gave me was unselfish, nonjudgmental unconditional love.

Ricco and Shady (the 1st two on the left) and I also wish you both a quick recovery.

What type of cancer is it? Some are quite treatable and some, well, not so much. Also, I raised and showed Siberian Huskies for 25 years and few of them got cancer. On some of them the chemo was very affective and they seemed to tolerate it much better than people seem to.

Mental nailed this one on the head--well done sir! If this doesn't work out, just remember Molly has had a good life while in your aegis and there are many rescue pets that will never get the opportunity you have given your companion. I do hope it is curable; but if it is not, there are others in need of your excellent fostering.

I really don't know what to do. I've had Molly in to the vet early this morning and she wants me to consider removing her entire front leg. She's concerned that she can't get the margins of depth required. She's my hiking dog. She would be devastated.
I told her to try to get it........not what I expected.

Sorry to hear about the leg. It is a tough decision you have to make. I refer back to Mental's post and no one is in a position to judge you on any decision you make. Just do the right thing in your heart.

We were up at Winter Park a few weeks ago and they must have been having a tripod convention or something because there were a bunch of 3-legged dogs running around. One thing I noticed is that it wasn't slowing any of them down. They were still happy and playing... one was swimming in a pond at the base of the mountain. Dog's have an amazing way of adapting.

Spoke with the husband in CA. We decided that if the vet couldn't get all of the cancer than we would leave the leg on and hope we get as much love and time from Molly as possible. We'll pray for a miracle and leave it at that.
I've had to put a dog down before, but not at five years of age....and this one is SPECIAL. A once in a lifetime dog...I mean it.

Girl I am so very sorry. All you can do now is gather facts. Get as much info as you can to base your choices off of, then do the right thing by Molly. You will know in your heart what the right action to take is when you are confronted with it.

I will recommend the amazing book, See Spot Live Longer, by Steve Brown & Beth Taylor. This book will include the topic of diet.

Below is for information purposes only. This information is not medical advice, (just encase someone here is recording this data for the FDA, USDA, FTC, etc.)

http://www.petcancerawareness.org/signs.html
(Now this will include the language "10 Early Warning Signs as identified by the Veterinary Cancer Society.", however I understand these are not early...just the mid-to-late physical signs of illness.)

Look for a Reiki Master in your area that is an 8th degree. This person most likely has the previous experience with pets. (Energy Healing)

Quality vs quantity is the choice.
Chemo and Radiation is quantity, but not quality. I have never advised someone to get chemo/radiation. Just as I have never advised someone to get married or go to war.

Inositol hexaphosphate (IP6) is a chemical found in beans, brown rice, corn, sesame seeds, wheat bran, and high fiber foods. IP6 is considered to be a natural cancer fighter and proponents claim it can slow or reverse the growth of various forms of cancer, including breast, colon, and prostate cancers.

Selenium has been effective. Ask a farmer.

I was reading an article online that I thought was interesting on preventing pet cancer. Check out the site it has a lot of good tips for holistic pet care. www.dogchannel.com (http://www.dogchannel.com/)

1. Provide only pure water.

2.If your dog already has cancer. avoid all vaccinations because it can stress the immune system.

3.avoid indoor pollution

4.keep your pet away from contaminated water such as puddles, lakes, ponds etc.

5.keep your pet away from electromagnetic radiation.

6.Don't use unnatural flea products on your pet

7.Don't allow your pet to ride in the back of a pickup truck. They are exposed to too much smog, pollution and fumes this way.

8. keep your pet away from pesticides and herbicides on lawns and plants.

9. keep your pet stress free

10. exercise your pet on a regular basis.

source: www.dogchannel.com/doghealth/article_cancer-2.aspx (http://www.dogchannel.com/doghealth/article_cancer-2.aspx)BTW: reverse osmosis filtered water is not pure water, it's dead water.

Ask about the content of the biopsy, (heavy metal, foreign protein, bacterial, T cell, etc).

Patience is a virtue.:)

Thanks ya'll. These are great tips. The only one we break is #4. She's a black lab/border collie mix and she lives for the water. She's in it several times a week. It's mostly reservoir water stored for drinking. I guess she has the genetics thing going against her. We will try to make some better changes to her food consumption. She loves to eat cat food and that can't be good.

Still haven't heard from the vet and it's been 3 hours.....I'm pacing.
