Just got this email from my uncle:
------------------------------------------
An interesting letter in the Australian Shooter Magazine this week, which I quote:

"If you consider that there has been an average of 160,000 troops in the Iraq theater of operations during the past 22 months, and a total of 2112 deaths, that gives a firearm death rate of 60 per 100,000 soldiers.

The firearm death rate in Washington, DC is 80.6 per 100,000 for the same period. That means you are about 25 per cent more likely to be shot and killed in the US capital, which has some of the strictest gun control laws in the US, than you are in Iraq.

Conclusion: " The US should pull out of Washington."

Or we should just nuke Washington from orbit...It's the only way to be sure.

It's hard to believe you've never been elected to office, Shea.

For those statistics to hold up, and using the current number of confirmed US Troops killed in Iraq of 2324 we would have had to have 3,873,333 troops rotating in and out of Iraq for the ratio of 60 deaths/100,000 soldiers to be true. When you combine the total number of men and women serving in the Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force you get roughly 1.5 million active duty and 1.5 million reserve personel. As near as I can tell we have rotated 800,000 total US forces through Iraq since the war began so the death rate would actually be 290.5/100,000. The person doing the math in this email falsely assumes that a different 160,000 troops were present in Iraq for each of the 22 months cited.

I'm not great at math so anybody wanting to check my calculations is more than welcome. Generally speaking, if its a forwarded email its probably full of bullshit. In this case its bullshit propaganda by gun rights activists who are minimizing the deaths and sacrifices of US soldiers.

I'm not making any statement on gun control or the war but I think our soldiers deserve better than to be used, minimized and misrepresented in order to further a specific group's political agenda. Also nothing personal against you, Jess.

No worries.... I posted it for humor's sake, no political statement whatsoever. All you have to do is ask me, or even search past threads to find what my real sentiments on the matter are.
