From Slashdot...

The elusive Precision dropped a submission in my lap about a DDoS taking down Twitter (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13577_3-10304633-36.html) running on CNet. It's been down for several hours, no doubt wreaking havoc on the latest hawtness in social networking. Won't someone please think of the tweeters? Word is that both Facebook & LiveJournal have been having problems this AM as well.

What will all the teenagers and 30/40-somethings do?!

Wow... Twitter and Facebook both having serious issues this AM. Glad myspace is my default. No problems there (even though it used to be THE most problematic)

Ya that maybe a problem. But causing one problem to find out that someone you havnt seen in 3 years is going to be in your class makes it worth it.

Having been heavily involved in technology since around 1982, when I have my first business repairing neighborhood computers, I think there needs to a break or recession of communication and ease of access. When I turn my phone off for the entire weekend, do not touch a computer, and have as little contact as I possibly can with technology, I am as happy as I have been since I got my first Stretch Armstrong or had my first funnel cake.

Social network sites are places to brag about yourself, show the world who you think they want you to be, and places to allow others to see what fad bandwagon they need to hop on ASAP OMG!!!!

I have a Myspace. I have not been on it in a loooong time. If you need to reach me, I will be over there. ------->

Web attack 'aimed at one blogger' (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8189162.stm)

"[The] attack appears to be directed at an individual [a pro-Georgian blogger known as Cyxymu.] who has a presence on a number of sites, rather than the sites themselves," a Facebook spokesman told BBC News.

"Specifically, the person is an activist blogger and a botnet was directed to request his pages at such a rate that it impacted service for other users."

Botnets are networks of computers under the control of hackers.

So does any know of a way to see if your home computer is part of this kind of attack?

See if you have any rootkits installed.

Turn on logging on your router.

Block all ports you are not going to use.

Do not log into your computer as an admin unless you HAVE to. Use a standard user account. Change your admin login weekly.

I have a system at home, sitting open on a fully open router. It gets nailed A LOT. 5 or 6 times a day. It is sort of a hooneypot for me to see who and what is accessing my shit.

can you back track to their computers?
