INFORMATION ABOUT THE POSITION


Typical work schedule is Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 4:30 pm
The average work week is 40 hours a week, with periodic overtime due to emergencies or inclement weather
Required to be on-call
Required to work on ladders and/or bucket trucks at heights from 10-80 feet
Occasional in-state/overnight travel
Frequent travel during work day for training and meetings
Required to drive CDOT vehicles
Exposure to loud noises
Exposure to fumes, odors, gases, dusts, etc. that may affect breathing, eyes and skin
Exposure to High Voltage (anything over 600V) and electrical shock
Required to respond to emergencies outside regular work hours and work overtime, including weekends and holidays
Required to work in extreme temperatures and weather conditions for long periods of time - hot and cold
Due to locations of some of the equipment, must be physically able to work at 11,000 feet altitude.
Electronics Specialist II Trades I salary range is: $3779-5423/month
While these are the full salary ranges, due to the current State budget issues, the starting salary for these positions is expected to be at or near the range minimum.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES This position is located in the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Branch at the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) in our Golden offices. As an Electronics Specialist II, you will be responsible for installing, operating, maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing electronic and electro-mechanical devices for CDOT's statewide fiber optic wireless and hardwired network. You will also install and perform preventative maintenance on electronic and fiber optic wireless and hardwired systems/equipment. You will assist with the ITS equipment acceptance testing and new specifications, as well as in the deployment and operation of new ITS equipment and variable message signs (VMS). You will be responsible for maintaining all relevant maintenance logs on all ITS field devices, and will be available on a rotating twenty-four hour on-call emergency service to troubleshoot and repair equipment malfunctions. You will locate CDOT's underground utlities, will implement traffic control plans for road side maintenance activities. Other duties as assigned.
CDOT EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Three years of technical experience repairing, performing maintenance, installing, modifying, calibrating, certifying, or fabricating electronic or communications equipment and devices. Equipment and devices should primarily be in one or more of the following areas: telecommunication electronics (e.g. cellular, modem), close circuit and detection video cameras, radios, fiber optics (wireless and/or hardwired) and Intelligent Transportation Systems. Experience must have included work with computers and information technology. This experience must be specifically documented on your application.


The Exceptional Applicant will be an experienced electronics specialist and will possess the proven ability or accomplishment in the following:

Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and best practices of digital and analog electronic theory, telecommunications, and computer wireless networks;
Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and best practices of communication protocols such as IP/TCP/UDP/FTP;<LI style="COLOR: black; LINE-HEIGHT: 12pt">Comprehensive knowledge and experience in installing, repairing, replacing, and troubleshooting a wide variety of electronic systems and equipment; <LI style="COLOR: black; LINE-HEIGHT: 12pt">Knowledge and understanding of point-to-point, point-to-multi-point, and microwave, and other wireless communications; <LI style="COLOR: black; LINE-HEIGHT: 12pt">Knowledge and understanding of fiber optic cabling handling, termination and splicing; <LI style="COLOR: black; LINE-HEIGHT: 12pt">Knowledge and understanding of fiber optic and wireless transceivers, transmitters, receivers, and repeaters; <LI style="COLOR: black; LINE-HEIGHT: 12pt">Knowledge and understanding of electronics and control programming; <LI style="COLOR: black; LINE-HEIGHT: 12pt">Knowledge and understanding of ITS devices (e.g. Variable Message Signs, Close Circuit TV, radar and/or weather stations); <LI style="COLOR: black; LINE-HEIGHT: 12pt">Excellent project management and work scheduling skills;
Strong oral and written communication skills;<LI style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">Excellent organizational skills; <LI style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">Experience working with multiple and diverse stakeholders, with sensitivity to their needs and priorities; <LI style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">Work effectively in both independent and team situations; <LI style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">Strong attention to detail and accuracy; <LI style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">Excellent reasoning, analytical, troubleshooting, and problem solving ability; <LI style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">Familiarity with electrical work; <LI style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">Traffic control coursework is a plus;
Fluency in MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel) and the ability to quickly learn new software.

SUBSTITUTIONS An associate's degree or successful completion of the equivalent of 60 semester hours of training at an accredited college or university or recognized non-correspondence technical school with 30 semester hours of course work in any of the following areas: electronics, electrical engineering, computer science, communication technology, and information technology, may be substituted for two years of the required experience.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
The following conditions must be met and maintained in order to be employed and/or continue employment at CDOT in the Electronics Specialist II position:

Must be able to read, understand, follow, and give oral and written instructions in English.
Must possess and maintain a current valid State of Colorado driver’s license at time of appointment to the position.
Must be qualified and obtain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class A or B within 12 months of appointment to the position.
Must pass pre-employment medical physical exam and a controlled substance test (i.e. drug test).
Position is required to be on rotating twenty-four hour on-call emergency service to troubleshoot and repair traffic signal malfunctions.
May be required to live within twenty (20) miles of where the work station and/or equipment is located. This is necessary in order to report for emergency work within thirty (30) minutes' driving time under adverse weather conditions, after notified to report to work. Knowledge of an emergency or hazardous condition may be considered to be notification to report to work station.
A criminal background may be conducted.
Employees required to operate vehicles must possess and maintain a valid State of Colorado driver's license with a driving record that does not exceed our application limits, which include:

Seven or more violations while operating a motor vehicle in the last seven years, four or more violations in the last three years, or three violations in the last year.
Any reckless driving violation within the last three years, or two or more reckless driving violations in the last seven years.
Any driving offense within the last three years that was caused by alcohol or drugs, or two or more convictions for driving offenses involving alcohol or drugs in the last seven years.
Suspension or revocation of driver’s license in the last two years, or two or more suspensions or revocations in the last seven years.
