Over the last 2.5 years I havent had the opportunity to ride much thanks to my obsessiveness when it comes to a build. Unfortunately I did not have another bike at the time. I finally got the No Spark Issue of 2009 taken care of and fired it up a few days ago. But yesterday, I took my ride for her first spin in two and a half years. Granted, it was just around the block a few times, but that counts! Ive got maybe another week or so before its street legal. Gotta get my midpipe made so I can mount my can, otherwise Denver is gong to string my ass up! It needs a good carb tuning and suspension setup. And then I get to register and tear up the highways! I wont be back in my cage until the snow flies! Ill be hitting up as many of the late season bike nights and events I can manage now. So here are a few pics of the 99% finished product. Wave if ya see me! Youll probably be hearing more out of me now that I am riding again!

Specs huh? I coudl let you guess but there are like 6 different bikes in there! Ok here's the basics:

1990 FZR600 frame-Modified
1996 FZR600 engine- FP shift kit, Barnett Clutch,FP ign advacne
1996 FZR600 Carbs- Full rebuild, FP stage 3
D&D 4-2-1 header, 2007 R6 shorty muffler
2006 R1 Subframe/Tail/Seats
2003 R1 Forks- Custom lower triple
2003 YZF600 Swingarm/Rear wheel
160/60/17, 120/70/17 Pirelli Diablos
2006 R6v Shock
2003 YZF600 tank
Customized harness, Electrosport guage
Custom one off headlight
Custom crash rails with sliders
Limited production run custom rearsets(maybe 20 in the world!)

I am sure there is loads more I am missing. It still needs to be refined over the winter, like powdercoating some parts that I painted and didnt hold up so well, or fixing a ding here and a crack in the tail plastic. But otherwise she is about 99% done. I dont have a lot of money into this project, but I have countless hours for sure!

the day I bought it, in sad sorry shape. But it had a D&D 4-2-1 header, pods, SS lines, and some other goodies and the engine ran strong even though the carbs were screwed up bad.

I still need to add some small LED signals up near the front somewhere since you cant see these at all from the side since theyre inside the housing. And I will prob have to add some small ones on the rear too. I have an integrated taillight right now. I am also going to lower the headlight just a bit I think, and I still need to paint my brackets.

MrFreeze5

Also, over the winter, I plan on upgrading the front brakes to a 02-03 R1 calipers(using 99-01 now) and a radial MC. Then these brakes are going on my new project, a Yamaha XS11 with R1 forks and a single sided swingarm. I cant stand the blue dot calipers since nothing is blue on this bike. The gold will go better. But I can tell you, what Ive got on there now GRABS! I almost did a stoppie at the first stop sign. Time to tune the suspension to keep from diving!

Planning on another street fighter based on the XS11?

Kinda yes, kinda no. First comes the chain drive conversion :D then after that I am going for a low, mean, aggressive bike. Not quite fighter, not quite cruiser, but would fit in(and stand out) with both, but with a little hint of cafe racer thrown in.

The basic plans thus far are a 1980 XS11s frame, XJ11 tank, 03 R1 forks, Ducati or more likely a VFR swignarm and a 200 tire. Monoshock conversion. Shaft>chain drive conversion. I havent decided on the tail yet. I am thinking a SRAD solo tail pushed forward a bit, and kinda flat, to give kind of a cafe racer bubble on the back end, but not as "cafe" as it could be. Maybe dirt bars or drag bars on the front. Thats as far as Ive got right now. I have a clear titled frame on the patio now, and a untilted parts bike still sitting in my jeep until my lazy friends come over to help unload it. It has the engine, electrical, and steering stem. Thats really all I needed off it. And it gives me a frame to cut up and bend and tweak before doing the final job on the titled frame.

I was originally planning to do this with a Suzuki GS1000 since its already chain drive, but I didnt like the tank as much, and wanted more of a drag cruiser look to it. Then I ran across the guy who made the chaindrive conversion for his XS11 and did basically what I am settign out to do. After finding his bike online, he is goign to be making the conversion for my bike as well. Prob the last one he ever makes. He is running a triumph swingarm and 'Busa forks.

I will be going for something similar to this, minus the tail. I havent decided on that part yet.

I havent synched the carbs or tuned the jet kit yet, but with all the goodies Ive got on it plus the 14/47 gears, it will easily lift the front wheel and get the adrenaline pumping. Ill let you know more once I get it out on the highway!

Thinking more along the lines of bogs, flat spots, won’t idle, etc. CV carbs plus pods plus 5280 elevation can be difficult to tune.

MrFreeze5
Wed Sep 16th, 2009, 07:50 PM
Yeah the elevation can cause them to be tempermental. I havent had much chance to ride on this setup yet, but when I bought the bike, 3 of the 4 carbs were missing the starter jets, so it ran stupid rich all the time, but the top end was clean and strong from about 7k+. So far, before the synch and tune, Ive got a few flat spots in the low midrange a bit and I havent hit the top end yet. But I think it will work out OK. My buddy's FZR has pods too and runs well. it needs a synch and a cleaning, but runs strong. The real trick is keeping teh bike running well on trips to the mtns. I know several other people running pods on FZRs and so long as you take the time to tune them in right, the deviation in performance due to conditions is not unbearable. I never had a problem gettign it to idle, even when it was dumping fuel due to missing jets. But because of that, it would not run well cold below about 55* without a lot of arguing and plenty of choke. It loved the hot days though.

One thing that supposedly helps immensly with pods is the flo commander. I dont have one yet, but thats on the christmas list too. it really helps balance the air. Also, faking an airbox helps. Thats one reason I sealed the edges of my tank with rubber hose, and I will probably make a base to go under the pod filters as well. Havent really planned that one out yet.

Yeah, my FZR is very cold blooded and difficult to start under 50 degrees. She runs perfect in the summer tho. What mods have you done to the engine internally? I did oversize pistons and new valves in 2008 (all stock parts)...at 39k miles.

I didnt mess with the rotating assy yet. I am working up to a 683cc build eventually though. I went through and freshened everything up. All new gaskets, seals, rings, etc. valves. Added an igntion advance and shift kit along with the new clutch. Couple that with the best header ever made for the FZR, pods, and a FP stage 3 jet kit, I did just about everything I could to it without changing the rotating assy and having the jugs machined. The engine runs really strong and was in great shape when I opened it up, so I didnt see the need at the time.

And considering that this was my only bike, I havent ridden in 2.5 years, so I though jumping onto a fire breathing monster that was even faster than when I got the thing might not be the greatest idea. Ill ride it through the end of the season and see how i feel about it over the winter, but I am gussing it wont be until next winter that I do the engine upgrade.

I have another frame that I am going to modify and clean up to replace this one that doesnt have any dings in it, and I want to raise the tail up a bit too. I will likely install the new engine at the same time I build the new frame, then just swap over the suspension and peripherals and call this bike done.

Yeah, check the pics forum. My build thread is one of the longest threads on the site. but the archives are old news. The admins dont manage the site well and its always down.

www.FZROnline.com/forum (http://www.FZROnline.com/forum)

Thats the place to be. It has a wiki and a much better admin staff. everyone pretty much left the archives about 2 years ago when it went all to hell. Its still useful for selling parts, but other than updating my thread, I dont bother with that site anymore. FZRO has much better access to info and the community seems considerably stronger now than the archives were.

Nice bike.

I can relate to the problems of trying to get parts from so many different bikes to work together. I'm in the process of finishing a custom, an ex-roadracer 1981 Honda CBX. I had a lot of similar issues with getting a lot of parts borrowed from various bikes to work along with custom brake mounts, wiring harness, frame, subframe, bodywork, etc. etc. I had to tune 6 CV carbs with pods as well.:( Next up is custom triples.

Your XS-11 should also be very interesting. Please post updates on both bikes when you can.

With the FZR it really isnt that difficult to make other parts fit, especially from Yamaha bikes. The only part I had to have made was the lower triple tree for the forks. everything else I manged with a simple welder, power tools, and a small lathe. But I tend to kinda overdo the details and that tends to draw my builds out. I went a bit above and beyond compared to your average FZR build, but thats just how i do it. If Im gonna build it, it will damn sure stand out. Call me an elitist and I wont argue about it.

the XS is going to be a fun build and I dont think it will be as involved as this one was. Yes it will take some fab and welding, but I dont think it will as convoluted as this bike was. The tricky part will be mounting the monoshock and the chain drive conversion. Everything else should go pretty smoothly. I will more than likely have another lower triple made for the XS as well to use the R1 forks and the the XS stem. I like the big beefy triples my buddy makes. And i am using R1 parts on teh XS for spare interchangeability. That way I can have spare calipers or pads or whatever on hand, and they will fit both bikes. I think that will be where the similarities end though.

I wasn't quite so lucky. A lot of the custom fab work was done by the previous owner of my bike but I ended up making updates and improvements to turn it into a road bike. Like yours, mine should be fun when its done.:)

That duc tail really fits that bike! It looks sweet! On my XS, I am going to try and shy away from the cafe look though. I think the tank will make a big difference though. The XJ11 tank is more of a sloping teardrop shape, which is the kind I prefer on cruisers. I think it will give it more the look I want. I dunno yet though. Right now I am concerned with building the chassis. Ill figure out the body lines when the snow is flying. I want something more sporty than a cruiser, lower than a sportbike, and something more comfortable for longer rides. But something that is gonna have some umph to it when I crack the throttle! But its going to be a slow build I am pretty sure. And nothing much is goign to happen unless I find a decent job soon.

until I was about 6, I spent a lot of time at the local motorsports park where my dad worked security for a little while. I used to see all teh drag races and the dirt circle track(back in the 80s before it got paved and turned into a nascar track). My entire bedroom was papered with racers posters, most signed(I wish i still had them all now!). I think that started the obsession. My grandfather is an electrical engineer and carpenter(for fun). He had me building working circuit boards at 5 years old, so that gave me a good start on the electrical side. My dad worked as a carpenter for a while as well, and also did electrical work, so when I turned to cars, I was kind of the black sheep. But Ive always been mechanically inclined. I removed my own training wheels off my bike when I was little :D I built a few badass trucks in high school, a street legal drag S10 with a 383 V8 and a giant blazer. Then in college I moved to Jeeps. Later, I went to school for my ASE certifications just for fun and personal knowledge since I didnt really want to work as a mechanic, i prefer building. I finished the program at FRCC a few years ago. Then I worked in the 4x4 industry for a while and also spent 6 years as a light wheel mechanic in the army. I didnt get into bikes until I bought this one 3 years ago. This was the first motorcycle I ever owned, worked on, and rode. Ever. After that i started working on my friends bikes since theyre much simpler machines than cars. And now I am selling off all my jeep parts and dedicating myself pretty much just to bikes. I dont have to fix 10 things that broke after a weekend out with the bike. i do with the jeep. So thats basically how I got to where I am. Ive always been very mechanically inclined. I can usually catalog parts in my head and see how they interact and do what theyre supposed to do.

im still not much of a welder though. Still working on that...

i am hoping to get back into the aftermarket/custom industry soon. Either 4x4s, or I would like to try out a moto shop. I love building customs, I dont mind what it is, car, truck, bike, but its gonna be original, and sexy :D

YAY! Its legal! I insured it and registered it yesterday. Now a for few days of shakedowns and tuning. I cant believe the crap fees the state threw at me though! I bought the bike back in 06 pretty much wrecked. I rode it around the neighborhood a few times, but that was about it before I rebuilt it. I just now titled it and they charged me $140 fee because I didnt retitle it immediately.:shocked:So title and registration that should have been about $40 turned into $180. Oh well, I can ride now!

DavidofColorado
Thu Sep 24th, 2009, 11:43 AM
Good for you. I know what you mean about the state. Instead of making $30 of me for that little sticker on my truck they are getting nothing and I have it parked in my driveway. I think its BS.

MrFreeze5
Thu Sep 24th, 2009, 04:14 PM
Now the trick is to not get caught between now and wednesday without a muffler. I was going to have my midpipe made today, but thanks to the title fees, I cant afford it. So Im rolling around on an open header until I get paid next week. Its not too bad so long as I stay in the lower RPMs. Which isnt really that easy since im trying to tune the carbs.

The state's got me pretty good on my Jeep. It sat for 18 months while I drove a company vehicle. When I went to go renew the registration, there is almost $150 in fees on top of my registration. The bike was supposed to be the cheaper option. Now Ive got until the snow flies to get the Jeep registered, but at least I have legal transportation now.

DavidofColorado
Thu Sep 24th, 2009, 04:48 PM
Well they are expecting me to pay $100 in BS fees plus $30 for the plates. They would have gotten the $30 from me back in April but they wanted to staff the office with 3 people when they have 500 people wanting and my estamted waiting time was "Forget about it...". Right now they are making $0 instead.

I did renew my motorcycle though and that was $50. Pretty steep.

I know some people pay a lot more and I should be happy but there was a reason I didn't buy a brand new car. And the taxes and fees being $200 - $1000 was one of them.
