A powder day at Vail about three seasons ago. From my blog:

"The morning sun sweeps its way down the eastern faces of the Gore range, replacing the pink dawn with its brilliant light. To the west the scattered clouds give way to patches of blue. Outside the condo window, crystalline shimmers of another 8 inches of pure white snow (on top of the previous 8 inches). Yesterday's snow showers, limited visibility, and cold wet gear are forgotten. ....

We traverse across to Blue Sky Basin, a mile or more away from Vail village, about as far out as you can get. I follow the sign to Skree Field, there are no green runs out here; only black or double black diamonds, and a blue run to get you back to the chairlift.

Ominous yellow signs warn of cliffs. You can't see the edge, only what's far down below ...lots of untouched snow, and round volkswagen sized white pillows (boulders). Take a deep breath, and drop into the elevator shaft. Gravity takes over, speed builds. You need to turn but you can't feel the bottom; it feels like effortless floating. You can't see your skis, snow billows up over your knees and drifts over your head; cold smoke. White mist coats your goggles, face shots with each turn. Finally it levels out and you stop, too soon for some, not soon enough for others. You look back up the slope and admire the fact you made those tracks, or just glad you did not fall.

One run follows another, there is enough snow that even by noon we find fresh tracks and hidden powder stashes. Normally nasty mogul fields are fluffy white marshmallows,... soft, yielding. Days like this are what skiers and riders live for. It's like a drug, an addiction. .."
